Custom firmware on Swisscom router?

Has anyone managed to get custom firmware on their Swisscom router to work? I've heard some people did it, but beyond that, no info. I'm just really curious how OpenWRT or even DD-WRT could be installed without bricking the router.

Cheers,
Sasha

Re: Custom firmware on Swisscom router?

Ah don't worry, I have plenty experience with DD-WRT, and a bit with OpenWRT .

The Swisscom router is severely limited, although I'm sure it is great if used to its potential. The most important thing for me is to have a meshed wifi network, hence the need for WDS. I really don't think that swisscom's software has that. Advanced QOS is great, especially when you can make sure that the swisscom TV doesn't get priority over stuff like Skype and so on.

There are a couple of other things that I really like to use, but by far the most important is to have the two listed above - which is why I would really like to install DD-WRT on mine.

My biggest worry is to avoid bricking my router :/

Re: Custom firmware on Swisscom router?

Here's the list of DD_WRT supported routers. If you have Swisscom's older modem, it's Motorola/Netopia, but I am not sure which model exactly:

Generally speaking, there are not many builds for xDSL modem/routers, because of the chipset they use.

Your best bet is to just buy any other router on that list and use that behind your Swisscom modem. If you need it to have direct internet access, set your modem in bridged mode, or do port forwarding to the DD-WRT router (or DMZ).

Re: Custom firmware on Swisscom router?

The thing is that it's quite a nice router (has gigabit switch, 2 usb ports, wifi-n) and it would be a shame to use it simply to connect to the internet. I checked, and the model number is Motorola Netopia 7647-47 VDSL Modem. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be supported.

Currently, I have 2 other routers, but they're the cheapest I could find in Switzerland (i.e. not that good), so they don't help much.

Then just leave the Swisscom router as it is, and port-forward it (or DMZ) to a second router with DD-WRT on it. Then you can use the full functionality of both routers.

The suggestion above is the best you can do if your on swisscom.

Re: Custom firmware on Swisscom router?

I have the Pirelli version of the Swisscom Centro Grande. The modem might be OK (just 100 Mbit networking though?), but the firmware is junk. I enabled the admin user to get access to the 'proper' web admin page. I tried a few things, such as blocking a client by mac address at certain times (i.e. no access after 22h00). As soon as the client (iPhone for tests) tried to connect the router rebooted!.

Leases by MAC is not completelty reliable, forwarding rules get lost, website blocking by wildcard + URL does not work, and so on.

Have to reboot the modem everynow and then (mostly due to a a new torrent not starting - once rebooted, the packets flow in).

The modem looks nice, and has potential but I've been getting so fed up with it that I was considering buying a FritzBox!

Re: Custom firmware on Swisscom router?

Is there a good option for the faint of heart? I'd like to run a hardware VPN off of a separate router but know very little about.....well....that stuff you mentioned. I currently run VPNs to the US and UK off my computer and iPad as required but would like to be able to access US Netflix via the Samsung app and not have to hook up my laptop to the TV. Any idiot-proof hardware strategies?
