StrongVPN via Thomson router from Cablecom

Ok, I will try and sound as technology literate as possible...but I am not quite sure I am up on all the terminology/technology here!

I have acquired a StrongVPN connection that I have been able the get hooked up to my desktop computer. I then went bragging to husband saying how I got it all hooked up and then realized that duh, in order to do netflix over xbox or ps3, I have to get my router set up too.

Is this possible? We have Thomson TWG870 WLAN modem from cablecom. In addition, we just hooked up a d-Link dir 645 in the basement as a wireless access point for the kids' Wii that we could possibly use as a secondary router to take care of our VPN for us while our Thomson router from Cablecom handles the "normal" stuff? This is where it gets fuzzy for me and I would appreciate any help!

Thanks so much! I was hoping to be able to set this all up on my own without my OH having to toil for hours...we'll see. Well, at least I can stream on my computer...

You have 3 options to netflix via your xbox:

http://strongvpn.com/vpnrouters.shtml

OR for cheaper solution, try playon.tv which will share your connection (wired or wireless) to your mobile, dlna tv, tablets, etc....

Thanks...I have seen that info from Strong VPN...I was wondering if anyone had successfully set up the router or it I *need* to buy one preconfigured... I will check out your other link.

Does the playon route mean I don't need to have the VPN subscription? Thanks!

You will need the VPN to connect to the US (or UK) for netflix, hulu plus, hbo go, etc... access.

Assuming your TV and mobile devices are connected in the same router where the desktop is, the playon.tv software running in your desktop will serve as the server for your devices.

This is my setup at home, i don't use dd-wrt because i want to be able to connect my other devices using the CH-based IP.

Thanks so much! I think this is what I will do as I don't need another router... Again, megathanks!

Re: StrongVPN via Thomson router from Cablecom

You could also try Connectify it requires Windows 7, but it will basically turn your PC into a hotspot allowing to connect your xbox or other device to the internet ... it's also free.

Great also if you are in a hotel and have to pay for wifi, as you can share it with others whilst only paying once .... a word of warning occasionally depending on the what firewall you are using to allow connectify to use a couple of ports.
