Which mobile network is better?

Hi,

I will be relocating to Switzerland in 3 months and Ive been doing some researching regarding mobiles and various networks. I read that Swisscom has the best coverage but the most expensive rates but Yallo has the cheapest rates especially in respect of international calls.

Then there are others that are in between that are not so expensive but the coverage is not so great i.e Sunrise, Orange etc.

Lastly, i also read that Switzerland operates on the GSM network which means i could most likely use my mobile from South Africa but i need a new phone anyway! Would it be better to buy a blackberry in South Africa or in Switzerland?

What would you guys suggest? I never thought picking a network would be this confusing!

Thanks

Re: Which mobile network is better?

I have a simple prepaid phone through Orange. I have not had any problem with their coverage.

We used our mobiles from Australia (GSM). Just be sure to unlock them from your carrier before you leave SA.

Re: Which mobile network is better?

There are really only 3 in CH.
Swisscom, Orange and Sunrise.

Swisscom has the most extensive infra because it was first.
Most expensive too.

Re: Which mobile network is better?

I use CoopMobile prepaid. It's free to call other CoopMobile users and I pay it with Coop Superpoints, so I've been calling for 0 CHF the last months.

Are you serious?? sounds like a sweet deal Mojado!

Thanks for the advice Robyn and HAT.....I will check with my network in SA. I really do need a new phone and perhaps it could be cheaper buying one in SA than in Swiss....

Yes, it's true. I'm not a heavy user, I just do some calls to more or less the same CoopMobile numbers. It may be different if you really need the wide range of network services. For that matter a subscription may make sense

Re: Which mobile network is better?

All the carriers are similar in coverage. I have Sunrise and never have an issue. Best thing you can do is check on comparis.ch to see which one offers the best plans for your needs.

http://en.comparis.ch/telekommunikation.aspx

then check on Mobile Zone to see which contracts/phone combinations you can get. Their prices are marginally better than from the network provider, but offer much more flexibility in terms of phone & contract combination.

http://www.mobilezone.ch/

you should also consider that calling SA is very expensive from the rest of the world. I wouldn't bother with adding international long distance to a mobile contract --you can get better rates with Skype or Rebtel.

Same here, but I even acquired the phone (basic Nokia) using Superpoints.

Phones probably aren't a great deal more expensive here - may be best to wait and get an all-in deal here in Switzerland.

Supermarkets use the main networks, but sometimes the rates/service is better than through the provider themselves.

Migros - Swisscom
Coop - Orange
Aldi - Sunrise

I have Coop and Aldi (dual-SIM phone bought for 50 chufs) prepaid.
Aldi has cheaper call rates so I use that more. But even for a prepaid I can still go on-line and check my call charge history.

Re: Which mobile network is better?

I am with Orange and am really happy with the offer and price. Once, before I took connection ( I was looking for a postpaid connection with a good phone ) I was extensively comparing Swisscom, sunrise and Orange and Orange was way more cheaper than the other two. You will find good deals also.
please check

Re: Which mobile network is better?

We have Orange, also.
When we lived in Bern, the coverage was pretty good. Now in Winterthur and Oerlikon (Where my husband works), coverage is spotty, so we're not as happy with it.

Re: Which mobile network is better?

Orange has very good offers if you're under 27 (which you can then keep once you're over 27 ). Their inclusive minutes cover calls to landlines in France, Germany and the UK too instead of just Switzerland, which may be useful.

Swisscom and Sunrise often have combination deals if you take your home internet and TV with them too.

Re: Which mobile network is better?

I know the Orange network is quite bad in Geneva, I usually have a connection Swisscom & a colleague who I am trying to locate often in the same building does not!

Re: Which mobile network is better?

I have Orange, used to have Sunrise. No coverage problems with either. I guess the country is small enough.

Can anyone confirm this? I was told the opposite in a Orange store.

In terms of coverage nothing beats Swisscom when you are in the countryside. In the cities orange and sunrise have similar coverage but orange from experience has still gaps (I'm with orange). Orange does not operate edge so your fallback from 3G is GPRS. Sunrise has Edge so it's slightly faster when there's no 3G connection.

From an offer perspective I remember a report which basically stated that all 3 operators are more expensive compared to the white label products like Yallo, Aldi-mobile, etc.

There's a very good new website which offers easy to use comparisons of some 300 deals in CH - http://www.abochecker.ch/

Good luck.

Same here. Lady from Orange store told me that the day I turn 27 the deal is off.

Nonetheless, I have two Orange subscriptions and I'm happy with them. Except maybe for this one time when they activated for me a 20 CHF/month service that I didn't ask for

I can confirm this from personal experience

There is a chance the terms and conditions have changed since then, however.

Do not take Orange!! Their package might be a good deal, but their after care customer service is terrible!

If you do not mind that, then it is ok
