Determining which network a given mobile number is attached to

I saw a post on here describing a code you can type into a phone to check whether it was on the Sunrise network or not. Does anybody have this again and also similar checks for other networks, e.g. Orange.

You really can't because of number portability. Often operators have specific ranges so that you have an idea but because of portability it might be with another provider.

you can. it doesn't rely on a fixed database of numbers but you can make a query to the network operator to confirm whether the phone number is on the same network or not.

i've seen the MMI code for Sunrise on this forum somewhere, but can't find it again. i would like to know the one for Orange (if available).

Instead of typing in a code, why don't you just look at the display?

you enter a code to check another number e.g.

*#code#number you want to check#

Just call it and ask thems that answers ...... if no answer, then the voice box usually gives the game away.

Abfrage Sunrise Mobilnetz oder fremdes Netz
Zeigt an, ob es eine Mobilnummer vom Sunrise Mobilnetz ist,
Bsp.: 0767654321

You can also activate the warning tone:

Signalton einschalten

Signalton ertönt, wenn Sie eine Handynummer eines anderen Mobilfunkanbieters wählen.

Re: Determining which network a given mobile number is attached to

I found this link, but I don't know if the information is still valid. (it's from 2005)

Swisscom: Send SMS with the number (e.g. 0791112233) to 3333

Orange:
Send SMS with NUM + [space] + number (e.g. NUM 0791112233) to 300

sunrise:
enter *109* + number + # (e.g. *109*0791112233#) and push the call button

Re: Determining which network a given mobile number is attached to

Thanks for the tips.

Anyone with a working coopmobile equivalent would be much appreciated. I tried the Orange one with coopmobile, but got a service not working error.

Re: Determining which network a given mobile number is attached to

There are 3 physical mobile networks in Switzerland, Swisscom, Sunrise and Orange.

The "Mobile Country Code", or MCC for Switzerland is 228. All 3 Swiss operators have this. The "Mobile Network Code", or MNC, is a unique number inside of the country.

Here's the 3 for Switerland:
Operator---MCC---MNC

Swisscom 228 01
Sunrise 228 02
Orange 228 03

If you can put your phone into some kind of "field-test" mode, you can usually see this info, otherwise you need an app installed. For Android phones, you can download "Cellumap" from the Android Market (free). There's probably something similar for iPhone as well.

Here's a screenshot from Cellumap, you can see from the MCC-MNC of 228-01 that this phone is on the Swisscom network. You can also see the operator name. But if this phone was for example on M-Budget, it may show the name as "M-Budget Mobile", because that's what's read from the SIM card, but the MCC-MNC is taken from the radio, and that would still show 228-01 because M-Budget is a MVNO ("Virtual Operator") using the Swisscom physical network.

Respectively, Coop-Mobile should show MCC-MNC 228-03 because they are using the Orange network. Aldi Mobile and Lebara should show 228-02 because they are using the Sunrise network.

*edit*

oops, you are trying to find out what network someone else's number is on. Oh, what i wrote is valid for your phone, mainly for people using MVNO's (like Coop Mobile).
