I admit it.. im an ipad snob and though its a lot more money, I cannot see any time or place where I would deviate. I have purchased one for my parents, wife, myself, children, and twin nieces. Facetime alone has covered those costs imho (yes, it is much better than skype)..

i wish google luck, but it will be like the zune... and short road to retirement.

oh.. btw... those two that I bought for the twins.... Interdiscount 299 CHF because they were the iPad 2 version... love them!!

now, finally, with all of that said, i think it is great that device is coming out at such a good price. Anything is better than nothing I suppose

this intro makes it sound exciting... so, lets see what comes of it..

Hardly. Android already has a 50% market share in the US tablet market - this is very likely to go up even more in the next couple of months. This thing is here to stay.

Why, are you claiming that's not true? Just read the news. Of course, you can just stick your head in the sand and continue to believe that iOS is ahead in terms of sales and market-share. I won't keep you from doing so.

Listen... I'm not going to take my energy to go b&f with you... You have your opinions and I have mine... I know both interfaces well and while open source has its value, it doesn't change my mind. Case closed.

Re: Google makes the Nexus 7 tablet official

Well I for one have already pre-ordered one.

Android-schweiz are going to make a mass order for them on the 7 July. Costs 335 Fr for the 16 GB one incl. postage and taxes. For comparison it will cost £200 in the UK so around 300 Fr so it's a really good deal.

Personally I don't like Apple's policies and will never buy an ipad or iphone.

I've also not being able to justify paying around 600 fr for a decent working tablet for what I will use it for.

I would use the tablet for when I'm travelling to watch videos and to connect to the internet in the hotels. I'll also use it to play games on a bigger screen and maybe to surf at home. I also want it to be easy to transfer movies to the tablet. This is more than sufficient to meet my needs. As I'll be buying the Galaxy s3 next month both of my devices will have NFC so I can easily transfer data between them. I don't need a rear camera, HDMI connection, 3G etc.

With other producers you have the fear that they won't update the software after 2 years. With this you don't have that fear which is ideal as I don't plan to buy a new tablet every 2 years.

I haven't read any negative review about this. Engadget describes me pretty well:

So, while we tend to prefer larger tablets that better differentiate themselves from phones, if you've been toying with the idea of getting a real Android slate but didn't want to spend big bucks for a big device, this is what you've been waiting for

Sorry, out of personal curiosity - this was my reasoning for not buying an iPad... however once I had a Samsung Tablet in my hand and going on to Google play for the first time, I didn't feel much like registering there either....

Where do you see the pros and cons?

Re: Google makes the Nexus 7 tablet official

For me the pros are that it's more open. You can use an android as a normal external harddrive. You don't need any software.

You also have more freedom. For example Google has google music where you can upload all your music collection to the cloud and tream them from anywhere. This isn't officially available outside of the US. Well I just joined up through a US IP adress which is already good enough to use the service of your laptop but I was also able to download the music app from other sources so I now have my 30GB of music available on my phone through the cloud as well.

You can also change the battery and battery cover on most phnes which adds more individualisation, add a micro SD card and the software is more customisable.

These 3 reasons are why apple products are not for me. I'm not dishing apple products they are very good. Android just fulfills my needs better.

Going forward this is way I find Android also more attractive. With apple you have a limited choice on what your phone/tablet will offer. With android you have a wide range of suppliers servicing different needs. Of course this can also add to the confusion of consumers.

Also the fragmentation isn't ideal through the producers update policies but with the nexus range this isn't a problem.

I agree apple's app market is more polished and also offers other media products such as music and films which the play store currently doesn't offer. In saying that though the play store has greatly improved though and there's rumors Amazon will be expanding their android app store to Europe soon.

Coming back to tablets neither the iPad, expensive tablets such as the Asus transformer or the Kindle Fire have met my wants. This is the first one which offers what I want on the budget I want to spend on this which why I've ordered it as my first tablet.

I'm excited about the Nexus 7 tablet, I'll probably wait till I go to California in August to buy one though.

It looks an awesome piece of kit and at the price they're selling it the build quality is superb. This is I think is a game changer and Google have made massive step with Nexus 7

You'll probably have to, as the Nexus 7 won't be sold in Switzerland. I pre-ordered one through other channels.

Re: Google makes the Nexus 7 tablet official

For me tablet computing has a price point where people will buy into it. This varies from person to person, but for me it was when intediscount/media offered the iPad 2 at 299. So after a couple of years of dissing the iPad I'm now using one, and I find it quite useful indeed. With the entry point on the nexus 7 tablet being $199 this should open the tablet world to a whole new set of users.

Personally I think the 7 inch format is likely to be more useful to me so naturally I'm interested. However, I'm not sure how nicely android devices will play with my existing setup which consists predominantly of Mac OS, with a bit of Linux thrown in. Also there are never ending rumours of a 7" iPad, and now that Jobs has gone this has more chance of becoming a reality.

The walled garden approach from Apple for the iOS devices doesn't really bother me as I can get pretty much anything I need for it. However, I do like the idea of being able to install apps that do esoteric things at the expense of battery life so that could swing me to android as a second device.

That's bad news, I can either get mine when I go home to the UK or wait till I go to California in August I'm swaying towards California as they'll be cheaper in the US than the UK. Not a lot I know but I'm planning on getting my daughter a Kurio too so I'm forking out for two tablets.

They're apparently selling them at Gamestop in the US - that might be your best bet.
