which router ??

I have just got my internet set up with Flashcable and 'apparently' I will get Downstream 50 Megabit/s, Upstream 5’000 kBit/s. I am using an old apple router that we use when traveling and its pretty fast just with this.....

I do need to get a router that will not disappear when my husband goes away and am really not too sure what I should buy. The guy who set up the internet suggested a Netgear one and when I look at their website they have a R6200 / R6300 that look like the newest and fastest (?) but as I use a mac both desktop and macbook and apple TV, also hubby has iPad I started to think about the apple airport extreme.... can anyone help me out ?

I need my internet to be fast as I have online virtual classes from the UK and also as I still have my US apple acct I plan on downloading my have TV shows to watch with my apple TV.....

Netgear WNDR 4500 is excellent. I replaced my old Netgear router with this when I moved out here and have had no regrets.

Re: which router ??

For ease I agree with Phil get a new apple airport extreme, they are a lot faster than the old models.

I would guess if you are traveling its an express you currently have....

Benefits you will also have are with airport espress and extreme it is very easy to add to the network to extend the range and coverage. You set the extreme basestation up as the main network and add the express to it, you can then travel with one but when you are back they will just see each other and pair.

Re: which router ??

My router used to go down all the time and had network problems with streaming media, but haven't had a single problem with the apple router I bought last year, can't remember ever having to reboot it, and all my media plays without a single glitch, the new model is supposedly even better.

Re: which router ??

If you're already using an iMac, Macbook, Apple TV and iPad then you might as well go with the Airport Extreme. I've had mine on 24/7 for two years, only rebooting for Software Updates, hasn't crashed once and I get full speed internet through it (it'll easily handle double your max download). Plus the Airport software built into OS X and iOS to manage it is very user-friendly.

Re: which router ??

I guess that depends what your budget is.

As far as quality goes, I would only sing praises about a brand called "billion". Its a high quality brand, and sometimes can be a little dearer than your standard netgear or thompson router.

in switzerland you can get them at Expansys (www.expansys.ch).

Look at it this way, Ive had my billion for over 6 years and its still going strong.

Re: which router ??

If you're already using apple gear then it's another vote for the Apple airport exteme/express. I'm still using a couple of the old UFO g extreme base stations in a WDS setup. They're almost 8 years old now, but I've only ever had to reboot one of them once - a brief powercut put one of them into a tizzy.

Note to self - must get round to upgrading them at some point.

Re: which router ??

Thank you for the input... i ant to Saturn and they had a super cooper NetGear R6300 for 220 on special, so I asked the guy at Apple which he would choose and he said the net gear one.... so thats what I did and It was easy to set up and my internet speed is still 45Mbps.... which is not too bad
