iCloud mail rejecting password - anyone come across this?

I can't access my mail account, either on iCloud itself or via Mail. I keep getting a password prompt box and an error message:

"The iCloud IMAP server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user [my username]"

I've restarted Mail, I've changed my AppleID password etc. I can access iCal/Calendar and Contacts both via the apps and on iCloud, it's just mail that isn't working. The system status is green everywhere, apparently.

Google throws up that it's a common problem but there doesn't seem to be an easy or reliable fix. Anyone come across this? And solved it? Or is it a go-away-and-it-will-sort-itself-out-eventually type problem? Major spanner in my works
(I also can't find a chat support box anywhere on the Apple site at the mo.)

Re: iCloud mail rejecting password - anyone come across this?

I have gotten the same message a few times, or that my password is incorrect. This is when I am at home on my usual server. But if I refresh a few times it seems to go away. I am on a sat connection, so I occasionally get weird responses on password protected or SSL sites.

But maybe there is something more to it?

Re: iCloud mail rejecting password - anyone come across this?

My mail seems to be back working after being down all afternoon - changed the password, and later restarted mail. More googling and apple's own forums suggest a server problem at Apple despite the fact they claimed all systems were working fine

Keep your backups, just in case.

Honan is not the only one whose online life has been upended by a hacker who used social engineering tricks on Apple. Chance Graham, a "designer at Apple" according to his Twitter page, tweeted: "Exact same thing happened to me - iCloud was social engineered via support. All accounts compromised. Hacker contacts me. Same m/o?"
The technology was not compromised but the people were. In this case it is likely someone (the hacker) rang 'tech support' and got them to change the password.

Social engineering, in the context of security, is understood to mean the art of manipulating people into performing actions or divulging confidential information.
