choice of ISP

Hi
we moved to lausanne from Abu dhabi where every comms is completely controlled and there is only one ISP.

now we have a choice!!!! However, all 3 companies seem to have min 1 year sign up - what if we sign up for one and its rubbish connectivity.

what recourse do we have to break the contract if they dont provide download speeds and WIFI connectivity they promise?

are there any companies we could sign up for trial 1 month before committing for a year?

The don't 'promise' the speeds they are maximium speeds, expect less.
The Swiss don't go in for free trials unfortunately!

Re: choice of ISP

If you can go without internet for a while, and you're not afraid of meeting your neighbours, just knock on the other residents' doors and ask about their experience with ISPs in your building.

Another alternative is to ask your employer (or work colleagues) for their recommendations.

Re: choice of ISP

Swiss ISPusually brings what they expect.

Often itsthat the problem is your devices. When I switched to Cablecom 50Mbit services,I only got like 20 down. This was caused by my WLAN router. I replaced it andgot the 50.

Cable as ashared technology is more vulnerable for slow speeds. If you have a lot of heavydownloaders in your cell, you might notice something.

I heardcases where it was really bad, but normally you get decent speeds. I meangetting only 10 on a 50 connection is still fast.

Also onCitycable: They don’t encrypt their digital TV. If you want English TV justplug your flat TV in. Then you get BBC1,2,4 ITV 1,2 and Five. With Swisscomthis would cost you more.

I didn’tspend much time on a Citycable connection in Lausanne. But when I had it, itwas fast.

You mightalso check you rent contract for the flat. Your CityCable basic connection feemight already be included.

Re: choice of ISP

One of things you've got to take into account on this forum is that, regarding ISPs, for every positive you'll hear a negative.

Cablecom had a bad reputation a few years ago, but I've heard that's improved quite a bit.

Swisscom don't offer the speeds that Cablecom do, but you're more likely to hit the advertised maximum than with Cablecom - in any event Cablecom is likely to be faster, unless your in an abused cell.

Sunrise is the slowest of the lot, and for historical reasons I'm with them, but I can say that I hit the max download rate every time, which is not difficult as I've still only a 5Mbps link . That said it's fine for my usage as I don't torrent often, or stream HD, not to mention they appear to have very little downtime.
