Free wifi on Postauto

These have started to appear on the short haul buses in my city recently.

In order to make use of the offer you need only to register once inside a Postbus with your Smartphone, Laptop or Tablet-PC.

Technical details

For WiFi in PostBus a certified 3G/2G router specially developed for cars and buses is in use. At the same time, this serves as Wireless LAN Access Point according to IEEE 802.11g-Standards.

The 3G-network connection takes place though an external antenna on the roof of the Postbus vehicle. The same antenna serves as WiFi antenna, distributing the signal inside the PostBus.

Registration is necessary in order to be able to make use of WiFi in PostBus. The registration and authentication logic is secured by means of back-end solution – though a computer center and PostBus operated server. All data traffic generated through WiFi in Postbus is processed through this same computer center and connection takes place through a VPN-Tunnel.

In order that the user needs only to register once, the MAC-Address of the communication appliance used is stored through a back-end solution. The appliance is thus recognised as soon as the user is in close proximity to an access point and WiFi is activated.

Re: Free wifi on Postauto

A few trams in Basel have now installed wifi too.

There are a few green trams with black carriages painted and the new yellow trams have wifi.

There are worse places to while away yout surfing time.

Re: Free wifi on Postauto

I've been using them daily around the Baden area. As you said, you register once and then when you load your browser there is a little box that says take me to the internet or something, click it and your good to go.

Speed on my itouch though is quite low for something like facebook, but after a minute I can start to browse photos and everything else. Youtube videos can be streamed without any buffering I've found.

The connection is called PostAuto, and if you enter a bus with wifi, at the front of the bus there'll be a yellow placard hanging saying that this bus is equipped with wifi.

Re: Free wifi on Postauto

Not a lot of use if you're standing in the rain trying to connect to the bus timetable as the Postauto is late again though ....

It depends on where Chasing the Clouds is referred to. In my place, the Postauto buses are top notch.

EG: PostAuto Bus route 150 from Wädenswil to Horgen via Hirzel ( a good 45 minutes ride, hardly busy even during peak hours and excellent to surf on EF )
