Re: New Firmware 1.50 for upc cablecom Thomsom Modem

Well just another example of Cablecom incompetency.

(From http://community.upc-cablecom.ch/pos...t=181&stop=195, dated 02.08.2012)

upc cablecom have released the new firmware STBA.01.50 (v1.50) for their white Thomson WiFi-cable modems. This replaces the previous version which was v1.39.

The new firmware fixes the corrupt-file download bug, which primarily hit Apple users and their DVD downloads or OS updates...

The update is for this modem:

They say all customers will automatically get updated, but it will take until the end of September 2012 before all customers are done (because they do them in batches).

If you want to update now, switch off the cable modem, wait 10s, then switch on again. When booting up the modem will get the new firmware. Be patient, and don't interrupt the process, or you might kill the modem! The update is finished when the Power, DS, US and Online lamps are all on steadily (i.e.: not flashing)

I just did mine about 10min ago. I also did a Factory Reset afterwards to ensure everything was set back to default. If you do a factory reset, don't forget to change your username and login, and best set your own SSID as well.

Enjoy!

Not sure I would agree with that. Firmware is developed by the manufacturer of the device and firmware updates are common in the IT industry.

Yes maybe. But still the Swisscom modem has never given any problems. And such problems like this can cause alot of troubles for alot of people over a considerable length of time.

Re: New Firmware 1.50 for upc cablecom Thomsom Modem

Slightly off topic but about this particular modem/router. My wifi signal isn't particulary strong. I know the usual tricks about placement and all; my question is wondering if router matters in affecting wifi signal strength? Are there better routers for significantly increasing wifi signal strength than the Thomson Modem discussed in this thread...or does router not really matter?

Re: New Firmware 1.50 for upc cablecom Thomsom Modem

You can try to replace the stock antenna with a 3rd party RP-SMA type antennas.

As for me it helped but I no longer use the wireless feature as I have turned it into a Bridge to my wireless router.

That was what I was thinking...to just use the Thomsom as a bridge. I was just wondering if other wireless routers actually give off stronger wifi signals.

since the upgrade, mine's been bonkers...

Which router would y'all suggest with a strong signal, possibly install tomato or similar?

Asus RT-N16 ?

http://tomatousb.org/tut:installing-on-asus-rt-n16

RP-SMA antennas

Or equivalent routers that specifically have the Broadcom chipset and removable antennas.

I would recommend complaining to Cablecom about the signal strength of your wireless device. They will almost immediately offer to send a free wireless router to you. I refused the offer as I had already made an alternate arrangement.

Since day-1 I couldn't get decent wireless coverage in my apartment; even in the same room. I went ahead and purchased an inexpensive TP-Link TL-WR702N repeater which did its job really well. Later I remembered that I had an old TP-Link TL-WR1042ND ADSL2+ WLAN modem lying in my basement, which I have since configured to work as a WLAN router and have never had a problem with signal strength anymore.

this is what I have (and went back to) http://www.netgear.com/service-provi...s/WNR1000.aspx#

or rather that is the newer version of what I've got

it was the cheapest netgear router they had for sale in MediaMarkt,

cost peanuts, on all the time and still working fine over 5 years later

Re: New Firmware 1.50 for upc cablecom Thomsom Modem

I upgraded my Cablecom Thomson Router to the new firmware hoping it would eliminate the issue I've been having for a while now. WiFi will work fine for about 2-3 weeks and all of a sudden it stops working. It will randomly disconnect, I'll get the yellow triangle on the status bar, etc. I usually turn the router off and on and renew my ip, which will cure the issue for another 2-3 weeks. I already complained once and they sent out a new router but it's still doing it. Anyone else have this issue?

Re: New Firmware 1.50 for upc cablecom Thomsom Modem

Not me, wireless when turned on ( by default I turn it off ) works fine. If I needed stronger signals, I change the default antennas. On wired, it runs very well.

Since upgrading, I must have turned it off no more than 3 times which is OK by me.

Yep, I have this sort of issue as well. In addition to my Mac being affected more than PC's, I also can't run my ipad or even Kindle on the wifi - internet radio doesn't even work anymore!!!

Counting minutes until I change providers now; the whole Cablecom experience has been horrendous what with the TV box taking forever to do anything and intermittent internet. Absolutely lousy

How will a repeater cure anything if the base AP is experiencing issues ? All you are doing is passing on traffic to a stuck router...

The CC Thomson suffers from overheating...After my 3rd swap out I ended up buying a 30chf laptop cooler from Mediamarkt and sat the modem on that. No problems since then...

anyone have the problem that their modem is often resetting? Sometimes you can be using your computer for an hour or two and nothing happens. Other times, my modem resets every 5 minutes

I have the latest thomson FW (1.5). I called to complain and cablecom sent me a new one. It too is having the same problem. This has only started happening since the beginning of August.
We had a problem last week like this. Thomson Modem would drop wireless internet connection, and at the same time the cable TV would reset to channel 1 or 2. We initially called UPC about the TV and we told them about the modem. They had us do some checks with cables (TV straight into the wall, but with right angle adapter [3 port] and the modem is in office room with no adapter).

Through translation from my wife, they did what appeared to be an update on the cable tuner. Turning off cable box, holding 2 buttons down and turning it back on while still holding. I don't remember the exact sequence. We said we'd try the modem and call back if there was a problem on that side. Seemed to work since.

If you have TV service with them too, leave it on a higher channel and see if it goes weird. We think is was something to do with the tuner. They do connect together somewhere before it gets to the wall if I'm not mistaken. If the cable tuner electronics glitch, it may be causing an interruption of the modem portion of the shabang.

Just a thought. Our net connection has been fine since then.

the repeater (or I should've said WLAN router) will then be plugged in with a fix cable, then you can also disconnect the antennas off the Thomson and use your wlan router instead. though I understand this is not a real solution.

seems you got unlucky with the swaps. Colleague had his replaced and since then there are no problems.

Common factor is the cable connection. If the cable signal is weak or has interference, it will impact cable modem and digital TV reception. Check your signal levels! (or have the help desk check them for you)
