Well, 16gb aren't enough and the 64gb model's too expensive.
When you break down what you get for your money and what you actually need, the 32gb provides a good middle ground, compared to how much you pay for the 16gb.

Obviously, it's all down to personal preference.....

According to a couple of tweets I've seen, BhfStr ZH Apple Store have no 64 GB left, and 32 GB only in white.

Heard at work that a few people who pre-ordered with Swisscom got their phones yesterday, but that seems a bit unlikely....

According to Macprime, the 32gb ones were sold out at about 9:15. As of 10:30, there were only a few 16gb left. At 11, they were all sold out.
The white 32gb version is the best-selling one - that goes for the US as well. I suppose people bought more white ones because of the bad press the black version has been getting.

Bit late replying now I know, but these tweets were from a guy in the queue at about 1pm (and were actually retweeted by Macprime, so who knows...?)

With every storage capacity increase, the GB/CHF ratio grows exponentially (literally) and Apple enjoys a bigger margin. It's a win-win situation.

Conversely, the more storage you get, the more Apple is ripping you off and the harder it gets for them to manufacture reasons for you to upgrade next time around. It's lose-lose.

It's really quite paradoxical.

BTW, someone tweeted that they had a whole pile of 64gb iPhones left but wouldn't sell them because some people had apparently placed reservations but didn't show up to claim them.

At the Apple store? I'm quite sure they don't do reservations.

That's what I thought, too - however, apparently people wielding black cards with the type of iPhone they wanted kept on coming in and bypassed the cue. Corporate customers perhaps?

Maybe it was the people in line who were handed tokens at some point so that they could frolic those last few hours/minutes before opening?

Re: iPhone 5 thread

I saw the new iphone 5 at Media Markt in Basel, no one was looking at it. I had a look out of curiosity. I picked one up and it felt a bit like old HTC phone. This phone is going to result in bonanza for the accessory industry--- when you consider that they could have gone with a standard mini usb plug...but instead went with yet another proprietary connector then it clear that one of their goals is to make sure the people pay as much as possible for connectors. I wonder if the reality of the unfinished ios version/maps/photo problems is going to counter balance PR published as reviews ? Though it is certainly not an enormous surprise that are experiencing problems...it still brings a smile my face. It was probably only a matter time.

Have you checked on apple.ch?

Also, if you buy a locked phone without a contract, most providers will unlock it for you. Just make sure you ask first I they'll do it on the spot.

So, here it goes - my short pros and cons:

+ drastically faster
+ the additional memory is awesome. Apps stay open / frozen in the background a lot longer. For example, google+ had to be re-loaded on the iPhone 4S almost instantly after temporarily switching to another app. That took forever. Now it's back immediately
+ the quality of the screen is extremely good
+ the new dock connector feels a lot sturdier than the old one, although I would have preferred a standard micro USB plug
+ the larger screen does help a bit in displaying websites etc. better but I still feel it's not big enough for my personal taste
+ the phone connects to my Asus WiFi AP a lot quicker

- the low weight of the device does make it feel cheaper than the iPhone 4S. Overall, the build quality feels somewhat worse, although crash-tests have shown that it actually isn't.
- I already managed to put a rather ugly scratch into one of the metal edges. I don't even know how it happened -> get a white one, if you can.
- not really phone related and only temporary: most apps (including tapatalk, which I'm using to type this) don't support the new screen res yet, so they're no bigger than before. At least the virtual keyboard is overlaid full-size
- there are virtually no accessories available at the moment, which freaks me out as I can't get a silicone case for it and am afraid that I'll scratch it more

Overall, it's a much bigger upgrade than I thought and I would definitely recommend it.

Re: iPhone 5 thread

Am skipping on this one. Checked out the phone at Bahnhofst. last evening.

Had been waiting for the iPhone 5, but the price point against the incremental benefits do not add up.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

The upgrade is much more extensive than was the case for the 4S. The screen size does make a massive difference. The overall speed of the phone is also impressive. It's even faster now than my Galaxy Nexus, which runs extremely fast with Jelly Bean.

The choice of materials, however, is a step backwards. Yes, the back can't shatter anymore - but it scratches up real easily. Also, the lack of NFC will probably be an issue next year, when coop and migros launch their contact-less payment options.

But then, I have a Lumia 920 on order which is going to take care of that - and the LTE frequencies as well.

I agree, the price is way too high. If I hadn't been able to sell my SGS III for it, I wouldn't have bought it.

Overall, the phone is a massive improvement over the iPhone 4S and if you're planning on sticking with iOS, it's almost a mandatory purchase, if you ask me - but only if you can get it with a contract at a reduced price.

Street navigation works well, I have not see any errors in road layouts yet.

POIs are rather lacking

My feeling is that TomTom supplied the street maps, which is why they are accurate, but someone else supplied the POIs, which appear to be old.

In addition, many POI locations are wrong, as if some computer ran a geo-locating routine on a street address and got only approximate answers. I've logged many errors, but only on POI locations

Let's put it that way: street navigation is ok. Not very accurate, but that probably has more to do with the GPS chip / reception than with the maps. I'll have to check if Navigon's better. As was said already, POI are hit and miss right now.

However, the satellite maps are god awful. Judge for yourself. The dark, blurry mess is Apple Maps, the other picture is Google Maps. They're both supposed to show our house :-) On Google Maps, you can see the construction site. The house was built 4 years ago - so these satellite pictures are pretty much exactly 4 1/2 years old. On Apple Maps, there's only a meadow where our house is supposed to be. As a matter of fact, if you look at the building to the lower right of our construction site, you can see my grandparents' former home. To the left of it, there's a driveway my grandfather built 27 years ago. On Apple Maps, there's only lawn - meaning the satellite maps are at least 27 years old. As a matter of fact, they're probably even older than that: on Apple Maps, you can still see two railway tracks at the Lake of Constance rail line. They removed the second track when I was about 4. So Apple Maps for our region are over 30 years old - that's a fraking joke.

peter
