pre-orders start September 14. September 28 is listed as in-store availability for Switzerland. The pre-orders usually ship a bit later (makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? :-)

Can't say I am - have you tried taking it to the Apple store? Phone quality has always been perfect for me on all Apple devices. Which network are you on?

The iPhone 5 supports HD voice. However, that only works if both ends have HD voice-capable handsets and if both are on Swisscom's or Orange's 3G network while you're talking. There are just too many factors involved to make this usable.
orange. I had both my iphone and my sim card replaced once already due to the problems, but now everything should be working again.
I only notice there is a massive difference comapred to those old basic mobile phones that can really only telephone. the connection quality is so much better with those...
I have no experience of other smartphones, just iphone, so I cannot say if it's a smartphone problem and maybe these devices are simply overloaded with useles stuff?

if I only phoned, I would still be using my nokia from 20 years ago

So, I just got a look at the new iPhone...

...and was completely underwhelmed.

Its a little thinner, has Retina and a quad-core processor. Which are all things that have been available in Android phones for months now. But the Android phones generally have bigger screens.

Meh. Snore.

maybe now I can convince my hubby that I can get one...but the old one! I think the new adapters is a big no-no for me, so far. We have about 10 other apple devices and for this one to need a different adapter is a bit of a pain. But it does look nice. Will have to check it out. Do they have Swiss pricing out yet? I didn't find it yesterday

Re: iPhone 5 thread

Hype or not, I kind of liked Jony Ive's comments in the iPhone 5 propaganda video where he talks about the fact that so many people take their iPhone with them everywhere and how they're not just designing new models for the sake of it.

It is, of course, pure co-incidence that about every 12 months Apple manages to convince Chinese factories to cram even more Chinese electronics into Chinese aluminum cases. The same factories that have been leaking details of all the internal sub-components to anyone who cares to know for the six months previous to Apple's announcements.

I am an Apple disciple, a mere Cupertino sheep. But at least my iPhone and iEverything else I use works as it says it should on the box.

disappointed. No new camera, no more memory, I didn't have any problems with the screen being too small and never noticed it was too thick.

Maybe I'll get one, dunno.

Re: iPhone 5 thread

Hmm, I have the feeling this thing isn't Switzerland-ready:

- No NFC support (Migros and Coop have both announced the introduction of NFC-based payment services at their check-outs)

- LTE doesn't work here because the phone doesn't support the necessary frequencies here.

The total lack of near field communications could turn out to be a blessing for the consumer, though: had Apple introduced some sort of proprietary NFC iteration, there would have been a chance for it to become a de-facto standard, effectively keeping Android users from getting access to the payment services. Now, the retailers will implement standard-based solutions that will work with all phones.

This aritcle is absolute nonsense and Dan Lyon must be an idiot. The Iphone being the flagship Bimmer or a Porsche....the Iphone is exactly the oposite. It's a Camry. Safe, reliable, usable, somewhat modern design, basically the car for everybody and everywhere. The issue is, all these tech-fetish morons who make it out to be this Lamborghini...and need to twitter or tweet (or whatever the word is) every possible speculation they have heard the new phone may have. "Oh, I heard the new I phone has an integrated lightsaber" are all building up some expectation, like it's going to bring peace on earth.
Apple are certainly not stupid and there must be a reason why they're releasing this phone now, with the specs it has (and if it's only to float the market with used Iphones, so that people who never had an Iphone would consider buying one.)

...and I'm sure they said all that about the Newton. You're right, though: Apple played it really safe with this very vanilla phone. And they're still marketing it like its the greatest thing since sliced bread, which it's not.

Also, when is Apple going to join 2006 and add a memory slot, SD or otherwise?

Yes, safe and unimaginative products like this do usually work as advertised, which is not a bad thing at all. One of Apple's biggest strengths is reliability. The problem is, Apple still wants to charge Lamborghini pricing for a new Honda Accord.

Re: iPhone 5 thread

Im starting to actively hate some aspects of the apple presentations / keynotes.

Everything is revolutionary. Please stop saying that. Every time these same videos of Jony Ive.

As soon as they got to the iphone, they said... "today we are taking it to the next level... a huge leap forward!"

I was excited. From that comment, I expected something a lot more fun... at least a braver more interesting form factor... but as someone else said, I found it really underwhelming.

At least when Steve said in 2007, "Ok lets make a little history here tonight..." he was speaking the truth.

They all get on my nerves a little bit... Cook, Schiller, Forstall. I dont need Siri to tell me baseball scores, I need it to work when I try to set up an appointment. I have a fairly clear English accent, and it only seems to figure out 50% of what I say at best. OK, it mostly works for timing my boiled eggs so at least that.

I mostly agree with the fake steve jobs guys article.... the UI is dramatically overdue for some change. Lets hope they arent sitting there designing more stitched leather style apps for iOS7

Of course I am a big apple fan and at this point I am tied into the apple universe because everything works well for me, the products are in my opinion well built and I think after sales service is top notch. On the other hand, at this point, I am missing the flair and more visible innovations in their mobile handsets.

To my mind, they should have designed the iphone 5 with a 4 inch screen and reduced or eliminated the home key area, keeping the phone the same height as the iphone 4s. It is good that they work on call quality with this HD voice thing so lets hope that becomes widespread. They should provide a visually intriguing update to iOS.... more stylish animations, or capacity to individually style the visuals.... how about changing backgrounds every 5 mins like OSX does, things like that.

Unfortunately I feel that at this point, Apple have their mobile roadmap planned out for the next years and it doesnt include a lot of interesting stuff.

Noooo I love the home button. Long press, double tap, triple tap etc.. you can do so much with that one button and all with a satisfying click. Even Samsung has the good sense to retain a physical home button on their Galaxy handsets.

Re: iPhone 5 thread

I was an iphone user and recent have a Samsung S3... it is more difficult to start with... but after you get used to it... It is much better than iphone 4s and it has most of the function of iphone 5 too...

the only show stopper would be the different in apps. I still think iphone has more and better apps.

Re: iPhone 5 thread

thats what i expected: nothing new, nothing of relevance for me. and as i said new adapters and headphone plug at the bottom... screw that!
in fact i want the iphone not to change, i am happy with my 4s and will stick with it. i dont care what the androids have, the fons look like korean plastic lighters with a fon device to me. the UI i find not appealing, bigger screens and all the other "advantages" are again of no importance to me. bigger screen... when do we get fons then in tablet size?
@krlock: why is the iphones UI overdue for a change?

Re: iPhone 5 thread

I think the most exciting phone at the moment is neither Apple nor Android, but the Nokia Lumia 920... wireless charging, Carl Zeiss optics and Image stabilisation, Nokia Navigation, full integration with MS Office/Skydrive, PureMotion HD screen and capacitive touch that even works with gloves on. A lot of this would have been good in the iPhone 5 <sigh>

the problem is that both android and ios are now 'good enough' i'm not sure what would persuade an existing smartphone user to go to windows phone if you are already on ios or android?

Lets's just hope MS have done the business with the OS as there are some really silly flaws on WP7 which could easily be fixed to enhance user experience

Sure, but could reduce its size or reduce the top bezel instead.

By the way Castro, what does a triple tap do?

It works fine but I think it could be improved and aesthetically modernised. Using their imagination they could give us some exciting updates there in my opinion.
