By the way Castro, what does a triple tap do
Its implemented for accessibility purposes (e.g. partially sighted people)

Settings >>> General >>> Accessibilty (Scroll to the bottom and you can customize a triple click shortcut).

However on my jailbroken phone I have it set to open up iTunes.

the problem is that both android and ios are now 'good enough' i'm not sure what would persuade an existing smartphone user to go to windows phone if you are already on ios or android?
What made people adopt the iPhone in 2007 when Symbian was already an existing "good enough" phone OS?

Have you tried a Windows Phone device? The UI is very slick. Better than Android or iOS, in my humble opinion. Android, iOS, and yes even Symbian all had tile/icon based UI's which all look kind of similar. Windows Phone has a radically different look with it's tile-based design. Plus with the release of the Windows 8 PC operating system coming soon (which is also tile-based) is a good way for Microsoft to extend their PC OS dominance into the mobile OS field.

I'm not sure why Windows Phone hasn't caught on faster, maybe because only Nokia has been pushing it, but maybe as Samsung and other roll out more Windows Phones, maybe it will catch on faster. It's mind-boggeling that a slick, radically differnet mobile OS that has gotten very good reviews is having such a slow adoption rate I guess Microsoft doesn't have the marketing ability that Apple and Google have? Or nobody gets excited by Microsoft products anymore?

The main driver of the WP platform is Nokia, and they're doing a pretty good job in the marketing department. The arrival of the MS Surface and other MS compatible tablets may turn the tide. I also think it deserves to succeed and when I still had my WP7 HTC Titan I wrote a pretty good review.

Re: iPhone 5 thread

quite shocked by the announcement, they really did stick 2 fingers up at their users with the dock connector, how many adaptors will the average owner need to buy I wonder. Ditto 2 fingers with the nano sim, come on did that 1mm of plastic really make enough of a difference to screw up sharing sims with your 4, or - heavens to betsy - with a 3? I put a micro sim in an adaptor in a 3 to check the sim, then spent half an hour trying to get it out again. Shock #3 - it's still the same old springboard, no wait, one extra row of icons, yayyy.

However I was pleased to see the announcement of the new earphones, I'm hoping against hope that they have got these right at last and aren't the leakiest headphones in the world. Although given they made a point of saying they don't make a seal with the ear I doubt it.

If only that 920 had an sd card slot.

symbian was good, but had flaws:

- unreliable. phone would reboot approx once every day or so
- poor synchronisation of contacts/calendar with web services (may have improved now)
- poor hardware
- end of line OS with no potential future support
- poor app market

i have tried windows phone and i do like it. but as i said, there is no real compelling reason to choose this new young ecosystem over the 2 major well-established iOS and Android systems.

iOS has advantage of being the biggest and most well supported system.

android has the advantage of having huge range of apps and full control over the device.

windows has neither the openness/hackabililty of android, nor the support and breadth of apps that IOS has. in short, i think they are too late to the party.

I had a Nokia N95 with Symbian and that was a solid phone, I had no issues with hardware nor software. Yes, the support for apps was horrible, Apple hit that nail on the head and is one of the major reasons they had a smash hit in 2007. Today all phone OS makers understand apps are probably the most key item for success.

The party is changing every day, the mobile phone market is so fickle it's hard to predict anything. A few years ago BlackBerry was king, and I would have laughed at the thought of a Samsung smart-phone. I think Windows Phone has a good chance to rise up as it's a very good and different mobile OS, it just needs some wind in it's sails to get it moving.

No 3D maps for Switzerland, either. Definitely not Switzerland-ready.

The main question for me is whether turn by turn navigation will feature cached maps or require a data connection.

Of course, you can always just use navigon on it - just like on the old iPhone.

Who cares, unless you're in the first couple of hundred camping out at the Apple store you'll end up waiting 2-3 months for delivery anyway.

Always buy towards the end of the expected product termination date. It'll be available straight away, and all the initial manufacturing problems should have been solved by then.

Is that too sensible of me?

Google will create an awesome Google Maps app for iOS devices pretty soon.
