I would buy it from an Apple Store and get a VAT free shopping receipt. There is no other way I'm afraid.

Hmmm, i'm not convinced, but i can give it a go.

I think i can only claim the VAT if i'm from outside of Europe, but no harm in trying i guess.

Switzerland is outside the EU, therefore you are entitled to reclaim your VAT. The only downer is that they use Global Blue to process your claim and they take a nice chunk out of your savings

Ahh ok, i thought because we were part of EFTA, then it would mean we couldn't reclaim the VAT.

So i could buy anything on my visit home this weekend and reclaim the VAT (provided the company allows this)??

Do you know if the VAT is taken off the price or refunded separately on the spot?

Its all processed at the airport, so you have to pay the full price in the shop but make sure you ask for a tax free shopping receipt (not a VAT receipt). This is usually a long till receipt or a form and envelope and will be branded by a company such as Global Blue. Sometimes the shop will ask for proof of your Swiss residence so show them your permit, Swiss driving licence etc.. (I once showed the guy my Basel tram pass and he seemed happy with that ).
Then when you arrive at the airport, look for Customs (either before security or airside) and get them to stamp your receipt. Make sure you have your goods on you in case the customs agent wants to inspect. Once your form is stamped, you usually have to go to the Travelex counter airside who will give you the cash or credit your card with the amount (again they charge a fee for this service).

You are a star! It never occured to me that i could claim the VAT back on goods from the UK, but i'll make sure to take my permit along with me as well. Looks like i'll be going on a long shopping spree in the UK.

I assume the same rule applies to anything purchased in the UK provided it is from a store which allows tax free shopping and is over 30??

Thats right, if you stick to touristy shopping areas (e.g. the West End) they should be well geared up.

Re: iPhone 5 thread

Do bear in mind that Global Blue will take roughly half of your tax refund as "adminisration charges" (it's a private company) and if you don't fight it, you'll be refunded in a currency different to the one you bought the goods in, and that's another 4 or 5% gone in exchange fees.

So, is there any other way to reclaim the VAT other than Global Blue and I thought, if i pay in pounds, then surely they would refund me in pounds right??

haha, i'd rather not. It just so happens that i'm going to be in the Uk at the same time that it's released. So if by magic, they have some stock left, then i will get one, otherwise i'll jsut be patient and get one another time.

But it seems there is a benefit to buying it from the UK to save the additional VAT (even if a chunk is taken for admin fees)

Re: iPhone 5 thread

I am not a fun of neither iphone nor samsung (even though I have one). In the end they are both going to be old news next year.

Having said that, I thought this needs to be shared:

Lol, every piece of technology is 'old news' next year, but that's just the way the industry goes.

Nice little link there, but some of the features are completly pointless even though apple has the same in it's own form (clearly an apple fan here)

Re: iPhone 5 thread

I don't know, judging by this report the iPhone 5 looks quite the advancement in smartphone tech (about 40 seconds in).

Agreed. BTW, first, I put the original Samsung ad. ,but then found the link reflecting both views, just to be fair.

Re: iPhone 5 thread

I am curious to see the prices with Swisscom. Although I have a feeling it might not be very cheap (I am only interested in a 12-month contract). AFAIK, the iPhones are simlock-free from Swisscom, can anyone confirm this?

It's up for pre-order now on Swisscom.ch

Not cheap. And no - they're not SIM-lock free. All Swisscom iPhones are locked. If you buy one without a contract and pay in cash, they'll unlock it for you in the store. But anything bought with a contract remains locked for the remainder of the contract duration.

I ended up ordering one, but probably won't get it for several weeks because of f**k-up in the ordering process that gave me a "404 - Page not found" every time I hit the "order" button. After trying 10 times, at a time when the server was almost collapsing because of the massive onslought of orders, I finally managed to get my order in - way too late, if Apple's US sales number (and the fact that the phone sold out within 45 minutes) are any indication.
