For heavens sake man, why? I don't think there's ever been an Apple product that I haven't seen you complaining about on here

I can't complain about it if I never owned one :-) Apart from that, if I get it somewhat early on, I can still get rid of it and perhaps even make some dough if I decide it sucks.

Ironically, I'm actually teaching an iPhone / iPad class (don't ask why), so I actually need an iPhone at this time (although a 4S would have worked as well).

ps: I don't think I ever complained about my iPod Nano

yupp, although it's somewhat unclear if they're really going to be available on the 28th - Swisscom doesn't say anything about possible delivery dates.

It's up for pre-order now on Swisscom.ch

Not cheap. And no - they're not SIM-lock free. All Swisscom iPhones are locked. If you buy one without a contract and pay in cash, they'll unlock it for you in the store. But anything bought with a contract remains locked for the remainder of the contract duration.

I ended up ordering one, but probably won't get it for several weeks because of f**k-up in the ordering process that gave me a "404 - Page not found" every time I hit the "order" button. After trying 10 times, at a time when the server was almost collapsing because of the massive onslought of orders, I finally managed to get my order in - way too late, if Apple's US sales number (and the fact that the phone sold out within 45 minutes) are any indication.
Ah that's too bad. I'll order from Apple directly then. Perhaps it will arrive faster too...

Don't know - doesn't look like Apple will be accepting pre-orders in Switzerland for that one. The Store's still up and it's almost 9 :-)

I'll keep an eye on it, too - if I manage to squeeze in an order with Apple early in de pre-order process, should there be one, I'll cancel my contract extension with Swisscom.

Don't really have a choice if I need an unlocked iPhone.
I know, I keep on refreshing the Apple Store website! I hope it does become available today, next Friday I will be in Istanbul and might not have access to Internet in the morning

I actually ran a Linux-centric news site together with some other people a while ago (*). I was an author for symlink.ch as well.

I'd love to run my own gadget site but don't really have time for it anymore :-)

I have always wondered, if those reviewers ever pay for any of the gadgets the review. Otherwise, they would be paying by themselves to market something and they don't make any money from that.

I don't know maybe they are just Saints

Pre-ordered from Orange this morning. Look forward to receiving it around Christmas if past experience is anything to go by.

If the order numbers are sequential, Swisscom sold about 5000 phones between 7:40 and 7:52 this morning. So I believe that all of us will be in for a rather longish wait - except for those who found out that Swisscom's ordering system only works with Firefox and Internet Explorer (but not with Chrome and Safari) and managed to place their order earlier.

Re: iPhone 5 thread

If you want to find a good tariff and cheap iPhone 5, check out iCompare- you can enter your usage exactly and they compare all the contracts based on that letting you know which is the cheapest.

I went to use it, but you don't have my profile? Few calls, no SMS (or rarely) and mostly data... 3 of your 6 profiles are for no data - what use is an iPhone without data? You only use it on wi-fi? Honest question, as I don't have a smartphone and am not sure how much data is needed...

I actually have a smart phone (iPhone 3GS) with no data. I have wifi at home, and at work. I can even use it to help me find places, as long as I look them up before I leave and scroll around the area to dump some map images into the cache. You can't load map data with no data plan, but GPS still works (this is with Google maps; the new Apple Map, whilst not knowing where anything is, might work better offline).

I use it when on holiday for emails and basic web browsing; saves taking my laptop. There's always somewhere with wifi nowadays. Plus, living in Basel, no data plan actually covers the three country area without roaming.

After you choose a profile you can customize it and set voice and messages to 0.

I'm after the same plan and, spoiler alert, Orange is the cheapest

Re: iPhone 5 thread

I've been looking at Orange since my husband's work plan is with them. He hasn't had coverage issues. I probably won't get one as right now I spend very little on my PAYG phone, but after what Adrian said, it is interesting to consider getting one ( an older one, then) w/out data...and just keep my PAYG
