Problems in getting a phone (prepaid and abo)

Hi guys

I just moved to Switzerland, more precise 2 weeks ago, to be here one year as an au-pair. And as anyone else in this country, I need a cellphone, but it has turned out to be more difficult as i thought it ever could be.

As a normal working person, I went to the commune to days after i moved here, to be registered, and apply for a working permit. Since i am a citizen of an EU-country (both Denmark and Germany, i showed my Danish Passport), and since i have a contract, it should just be a matter of formalities to get ther permit.

Then, i went to a Sunrise store, to get a phone. I am quite forced to get a Sunrise number, since the rest of the family has a sunrise phone, and it will get cheaper for me. Since I am an addict of internet on my phone, i wanted an abonnement-solution.

The very unfriendly guy at the store, who did not speak a word english, didn't want to sell me a phone, or a prepaid-card, because i didn't have a work-permit yet.

I asked my family for advise, and the last 7 years, they have never had any problems with this (German au-pairs). So i went back to the commune, got a statement which said that I applied for a work-permit, and went back to a Sunrise store. But here, they just told me again that it would not be possible for me to buy a sim-card without a work-permit.

I really was frustrated, so i went into a Swisscom store afterwards, but here they told me the exact same thing!

So has i just been unlucky, or is there no way for me to get a sim-card without a work-permit? I am really frustrated, because for me it makes no sense, what so ever....

And BTW, i got a bank-account right away with this statement. It doesn't really make sense to me

you should be receiving your Ausländerausweis anytime. I am afraid that is what they want to see, even it is only a formality, since you are from an EU country. well, Switzerland is the land of rules. good luck!

In general I would think the OP just needs a billing address and an ID. Is the Ausländerausweis really needed?

I am pretty sure that anyone can get a prepaid phone with just a passport. We picked ours up at Orange and never showed anything more than that.

That is also what my family thought, because that was the way they have done it for the last 7 years. But this time, it does not seem like the case since both Swisscom and Sunrise refused to give me a prepaid...

Since it was discovered some years ago that Al Qaeda were using Swiss prepaid phones that were not traceable back to anybody then the legal requirements to purchase a phone got a lot tougher.
If you got a prepaid phone without photo proof of identity & proof of address then you were lucky

Go and get a Lebara prepaid sim card from the post-office. It should be fairly smooth. Once you get all your paperwork you can switch to Sunrise.

Re: Problems in getting a phone (prepaid and abo)

Prepaid in general is more difficult than just a standard abo. Because they fear you are just a drug dealer or whatsover. Seems you tried out Migros, Swisscom and Sunrise somehow. But what kind of abo or prepaid do you need exactly?

You want a smartphone for free it seems with a discount abo or whatsover. Which of course makes it more complicated. This troll at Sunrise didn't get because he wasn't english speaking.

In general it really helps if you EXACTLY know what you want anyway. In this situation I would be confused, too, as a retailer.

can't you get a Sunrise abo via the Post Office as well? They might be more friendly? At least my little local post office is!

this is when Swiss providers brought in the requirement for a social ID to get a SIM/number. Which is more than you need in the US for a prepaid contract.

They now have a requirement for Swiss passport, ID card or B/C/G/Ci permit. Foreign passport seems no longer to be accepted.

I would order online, go prepaid and get your family to be the "buyer". They will have to collect from the post office and show the ID.

Re: Problems in getting a phone (prepaid and abo)

I originally got a prepaid sim before I moved here. I think they just asked for my passport and an address to register under, so you could try simply registering under your non-Swiss address.

Alternatively, go to another branch and try there.

Re: Problems in getting a phone (prepaid and abo)

I got my >>sunrise-go-dayflat<< before having any Swiss Address.

Just needed to show my passport and give my foreign Address (which wasn´t checked against anything), and that was it.

Sunrise-go-Dayflat gives you 250MB/Month for 7.50, but if you need more data you can renew the package at any time.

Also look out for the new >>sunrise24<< to hit the market in September (I hope).

Rgds, Christian
