Thanks but for me if piracy is stealing then technically so is using Netflix through a VPN. You can't walk out of a shop after paying 50% of the price here just because it's that price in the US.

Hollywood lets Netflix stream their movies to the US for $8 a month. Hollywood doesn't let them do that here though. Here Hollywood expects us to get our digital movies from places like Cablecom which costs up to Fr9 per film! or Itunes where the number one film costs Fr6 upwards!

Watching them through netflix takes away Hollywood's opportunity to rip us off which lowers their income and as you'd have already watched the series you won't be waiting a year either for them to come out here and you certainly won't be subscribing to teleclub or tuning into SF to watch them. This theoretically reduces the value of the programmes and income for these channels are reduced due to people having seem them earlier for a fraction of the costs.

As I said I don't want to download for free but if Hollywood refuses to let us stream their stuff for the market rate they've set world wide, then I don't see why I should go out of my way to pay them for services they don't want to offer me
It's not all Hollywood, you know... Some of this has to do with each individual country's copyright laws- it takes time and expense to protect intellectual property in each and every country, and there is no "one-size fits all" solution to this.

Some of this also has to do with some countries simply choosing not to allow US programming into their country for various reasons.

My point was to offer a suggestion that does allow you to pay (at least indirectly) the IP holder and be able to enjoy the programming you want to enjoy.

Re: Netflix - Lovefilm

Fair points. It just irritates me that downloaders are quickly condemned yet the reasons why they use P2P are often ignored. From what I've read copyright laws here aren't the problem rather how much the licences cost.

Anyway to get back on topic I recommend overplay.net. You've got a wide range of country IP addresses. Works well with the BBC iplayer and RTE player. I'm not sure how it is with Netflix though and it costs $4.95

In any case, downloading isn't illegal in Switzerland anyway (someone posted a link to the ruling the other day but I can't find it just now)

Correct, but uploading is which is the case when using torrents... If there is a huge amount of traffic over certain ports, the ISP will check it out and you may (or may not) receive a letter with a warning...

Re: Netflix - Lovefilm

If only lovefilm would come to CH. We had it in Germany and loved it! I have a VPN and VPN Router and all that and still can't get my PS3 to stream Netflix. However, the XBOX 360 in the basement can, so it has become less of an issue (although I may start a thread about it later as it bugs me I can't get it to work!)

But, when I go to Netflix on my computer or iPad to see what is available to stream, there isn't a lot on offer, IMO. Not a lot of movies (recent ones at least). Or am I missing something? Is it all it is cracked up to be? I am almost tired of trying to force it to work and give up...

Re: Netflix - Lovefilm

For those concerned about uploading, the simple answer is to find an alternative to torrents, there are plenty around. I'm not going to get into naming sites / protocols here as some mods have been a bit uncomfortable with that in the past, but they're not hard to find with the search engine of your choice.

uncomfortable with something that is legal in CH is an odd concept.

as a mod personal views should be left at the door.

Re: Netflix - Lovefilm

Last time I checked, I do not believe it is illegal to download pirated material in Switzerland. You just cannot seed it to others. Whether it is ethical is another discussion to have.

Already confirmed a few posts back. This is why I was suggesting to look for alternatives to torrents, that way you can avoid the uploading which is often needed with the BitTorrent protocol.

I believe seeding refers to the initial seed of a torrent.

My friend has downloaded Gigabytes on a monthly basis and not had one of these famous letters.

There is only one prosecution that I know of and that was a woman seeding something like 23000 songs.....never heard of any people getting letters.

Seeding can be the initial distribution, but uploading usually also occurs concurrently with downloading, and carries on afterwards if the user chooses - this is also commonly referred to as seeding. Many clients can be set to turn it off, but depending on the swarm this can have a prohibitive effect on download speed.

I've no idea how strictly the legal requirements on this are enforced in Switzerland, and frankly don't care as I stopped using torrents years ago. I'm just pointing out that there are alternatives for anyone who may be interested.
