What SC said, there are some pretty detailed threads out there. But to give you a quick answer, no it won't work without a VPN to mask your CH ip address

http://www.unblock-us.com/

There's a thread somewhere on EF, suggesting this site, but I thought I'd just cut to the heart of the matter and post a link.

I use the Swiss version www.dvdstar.ch, and I am very happy with it, the site is in English, French, German and maybe also Italian.

Unblockus is great. I can stream netflix, hulu, crackle and ESPN from my laptop, iPad and Xbox 360. 4.99 per month and simple to setup.

If you are still at the market at looking for a similar service like Unblockus. try playon.tv, they have a 14 day trial, i can give you several of my personal plugins that access movies,tv series and live channels.

isohunt.com and piratebay are the main players but you need to use a client such as utorrent.

But using VPNs to access Geo blocked sites also breaks Copyright and licensing agreements

But VPN access' intention is to stream multimedia contents from blocked sites that's why you are going for paid services, downloading stuff is P2P.

Oh I know that but Swiss cheddar has only groaned the ones suggesting downloading and not the ones giving VPN recommendations. Personally I don't see a big distinction. Both violate copyright laws in some countries and licensing agreements.

If downloading for free is theft then using a VPN is for me the same as walking into manor, picking up something for 100 Fr, giving the sales guy 50 Fr as it only costs 50 Fr on Amazon in the US. If your going to run out of the store and consume the product, your still gonna be done for theft as well.

They don't exist here as the companies still want us to pay 6/8 Fr through Itunes/VOD per film.

I would love to pay for netflix/lovefilm and I even had a VPN for a few months but I then made a conscious decision to stop doing it as since the companies don't feel like selling licenses for a similar service in Switzerland then I don't feel like paying extra to a shady company who does who-knows-what with our data to give the companies my money. I want to use a streaming service like netflix in Switzerland. When they start doing it at the market rate which is 5-10 $/£/€ I'll be the first to register. As it's not possible and the current english digital offers in Switzerland is very limited and way above the market rate set by them, I'm forced to find other options. The same goes for sport and music as well. I'm often not able to pay for my desired media due to it not being offered anywhere in Switzerland

If you are looking for another option, you could use a Slingbox. Essentially, you connect the Slingbox to a cable/television/satellite tuner, and it converts the signal to send it across the internet to your client device, running their software. It can run on PC, Mac, Android, Ipad/Iphone, so you can watch TV virtually anywhere. You would have to have a paid cable/satellite account or be accessing US over-the-air broadcasts, so ethically, I wouldn't consider this as stealing, since you are paying for the programming.

I use Itunes to download films. Zurich also has some pretty good rental shops if you can handle going old school.

Thanks but for me if piracy is stealing then technically so is using Netflix through a VPN. You can't walk out of a shop after paying 50% of the price here just because it's that price in the US.

Hollywood lets Netflix stream their movies to the US for $8 a month. Hollywood doesn't let them do that here though. Here Hollywood expects us to get our digital movies from places like Cablecom which costs up to Fr9 per film! or Itunes where the number one film costs Fr6 upwards!

Watching them through netflix takes away Hollywood's opportunity to rip us off which lowers their income and as you'd have already watched the series you won't be waiting a year either for them to come out here and you certainly won't be subscribing to teleclub or tuning into SF to watch them. This theoretically reduces the value of the programmes and income for these channels are reduced due to people having seem them earlier for a fraction of the costs.

As I said I don't want to download for free but if Hollywood refuses to let us stream their stuff for the market rate they've set world wide, then I don't see why I should go out of my way to pay them for services they don't want to offer me
