What's best - mobile phone companies

Hi all,
I will be moving to Basel very soon and I am wondering what is the best mobile phone company for me. I already have a mobile phone, no smartphone, just a simple old phone. I will be making regular calls to Germany (to a mobile) but otherwise do not use my phone excessively. I have had bad experiences in the past with phone companies (in Australia) so thought I should ask here first. I don't want to sign any long term contract, I just want something prepaid if possible that has cheap rates for calling Germany.
Thanks.

Go to any Aldi shop and buy a pre paid SIM card, you need a photo copy of your permit.

Hi,

Check out prepaid cards from Lebara, M-Budget, etc.

But also do check out this website for comparison and also to get some ideas on various companies: http://en.comparis.ch/telecom/mobile.aspx

Cheers,
Cassy

Re: What's best - mobile phone companies

There are frequently nice offers in retail stores, including both a phone (simple though) and a prepaid SIM that is prefilled with almost as much as you pay for the package. I bought my phone and SIM card for 10 CHF, which included 6 CHF on the card. I think most operators are similar but I know Lebara has fairly reasonable rates to other countries, although best to fixed net of course. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. Yes I was just reading on another post that you require your permit to buy a sim card. Must remember that!

Does pre-paid mean payg?
I didn't have to have a permit for PAYG Swisscom, but I did have to show my passport and have an address they could register it to. Perhaps showing a permit is for those with a contract.

Orange has also good offers when you select international or travel option. With the pre paid cards, depands on how much money you charge, you get also free internet.

If you are going to call abroad regularly, I would check Yallo (http://www.yallo.ch) or Lebara (http://www.lebara.ch).

If you want a subscription, with Orange Me all the minutes include calls to any country in Europe, mobile or fixed line, which is quite convenient for calling home.
