views on the cablecom curent offers/"crazy deal"

looking at the current cablecom sales promotion junk mail flyer and considering doing an upgrade from my lowly 25mbs internet only connection to the 5mbs or 10 connection.

anyone seen or experienced any "hidden" costs or disadvantages in the packages?

http://www.upc-cablecom.ch/en/b2c/kombiangebote.htm

and isnt there a choice of router, a thompson and another? couldnt really make it out from some other posts

Re: views on the cablecom curent offers/"crazy deal"

i just looked at it. i'm on the 25 package and the 'crazy deal' would be the same price as the 50 package but with:

free phone
free tv
free wireless

i don't really want a new router, or the phone. the tv channels would be a nice to have.

not sure if better just to upgrade to the 50, or take the phone, tv and router. if i don't have to change router, then i can just ignore the phone and tv. otherwise, the hassle might make me prefer to upgrade to 50 or stay on 25

Re: views on the cablecom curent offers/"crazy deal"

I just ordered it. There are no hidden costs and you will get a router. It's the fastest internet you can get for this price (will be five times faster than my previous standard 10kbit VDSL/Swisscom).

You also have the option to cancel it within three months. But it's limited to August 31th.

Since I don't use my phone/mobile too much I didn't care. Those packages are perfect for some people and not so good for other people, as always.

I have the 25 MB plan and it is absolute crap.
Download/Upload speeds are ridiculously low, like 50 times slower than advertised.
Regulation in Switzerland does not impose any effective minimum % of advertised speed. So the get away with their "best effort" clause.

I complained - especially pointed out that most of the time, the speed was slower than their cheapest package. (the speed was close to zero sometimes) They gave me a month for free. I still had to suffer for a couple more months, then some technicians came and upgraded the connections in my building, now it is much better.

i get full speed all the time, quite often i get 3mbs

it all depends how you are connecting and what you are connecting to.

run the 24hr speed test from cablecom and it tests your connection so you can see if its a network problem

Re: views on the cablecom curent offers/"crazy deal"

There are always problems if you switch your provider. That's at least my experience. Regarding Crazy Deal I gave me a month to fix everything and from previous experiences I have a good feeling.

Those discounts they give you -- 100 CHF in my case -- just allow you to pay a month for both providers and fix/install everything.

In that case you have a fault and you should report it.

It is normal on cablecom to achieve 90% to 110% of the subscribed speed.

Any major variation is abnormal, and you should complain. They will fix it.

Re: views on the cablecom curent offers/"crazy deal"

I have changed to the Crazy Deal yesterday.

For some reason, my digicard authorization did not work anymore afterwards but the guy on the support line fixed it within 10 minutes (something had gone wrong with uploading authorizations on the digicard). Good customer service!

Re: views on the cablecom curent offers/"crazy deal"

depends what he is connectiong to and what he is using to monitor the speeds also how is he connecting - thru a LAN or wifi.

torrent clients if not set up properly will result in poor speeds, same as connectiong to just 1 or 2 peers.

he probably doesnt have a problem at all.

anyway... i think ill go for the "crazy deal" - i wont really use the phone for outgoing as my mobile is at least 50% cheaper but it will be useful for incoming.

Re: views on the cablecom curent offers/"crazy deal"

I'm on some kombi that gets me 100/7Mbps internet, free phone and "Comfort" TV. I think it's 99 francs.

The download speeds I hit on uTorrent are around 70Mbps.

Marv...!

oh yes, I also cannot really test my internet speed on a wireless connection anymore. Even an N connection is likely to choke at around 44Mbps. B/G long before.

Re: views on the cablecom curent offers/"crazy deal"

I just subscribed to this options by upgrading from standard 25 to crazy deal.

about the router : if you have an old router from cablecome with 25 subscribtion then you have to upgrade to the new router as they claim that the old one is not sufficient and capable to support 50's speed.

But I heard from some of my friends that the thompson router is not good and they bought thier own router with 50+ capacity.

About hiddne cost I have no experience as I am still waiting for my first invoice.

But i have experienced rather slow internet speed. The online videos are cluttered and you have to wait sometime for it to buffer. I never checked for the speed using any speed test. I have to do that now....

Re: views on the cablecom curent offers/"crazy deal"

No, it's permanent as they confirmed me. Just another package deal.

(I asked costumer service the question because when ordering online I came to a page that said: Try out for three months or something like that which made me suspicious.)

that looks just like my connection... I upgraded from Basic Combi package to the Crazy Deal package right the day it was advertised... I could do that from the MyUPC account by just a few mouse-clicks... no additional costs, no equipment change, and the upgrade was visible on the same day... speeds have rarely dropped below this rate, and the day they do, a simple reboot of the cable modem fixes this... have had to do so twice in the past couple months...
