I don't think supposed to be in the same 'league' though, it's an entry-level Pro DSLR, and the D800 is pretty much the creme de la creme with upgraded sensor and AF system..

However, for most people it's probably ok because as you say they don't need the extra MP, and the burst FPS is also 25% higher.

With Nikons current pricing though it just doesn't make any sense to buy it, may as well pay the comparatively little extra for the D800.
I suppose the price was set in order to keep up with demand. I waited 5 months for my D800 - they just can't make them fast enough. Compared to the 5D Mark III, the D800 (and the D600, for that matter) is a total steal. Much better bang for your buck.

Re: So... what cool stuff do you think will come out of Photokina 2012 this year?

Cool - just saved loads of money. There's no WB or ISO buttons on the D600. I'm not wading through the menu like a loser

(Yeah, I know there are two programmable buttons, but DoF and spirit-level thingies are best for those.)

It's a case of choosing the right tool for the job in hand.

The reasons for owning a DSLR are becoming less due to the vastly improved quality of the mirrorless (EVIL - Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens) systems, and the fact that a lot of them are now using DSLR sized crop sensor means that it's now difficult to tell what was shot with DSLR and what was shot with a small EVIL system.

However to do what I do I need the bulk of a DSLR to help keep the camera steady, plus be able to use "specialist" lenses and flashes. A lot of these accessories are simply not available for the compact EVIL systems, or are not as complete and as functional as what's available for a DSLR.
I am very stingy, looking at depreciation, and more obscure options. I have a Canon A60, 10MP, 85chf from digitec P&S with CHDK installed. Just about the lightest camera about at the time, plus it shoots raw, and lets you zoom during videos. Kids use it without me being worried. I use a Canon 1100D, with stock 18-55is zoom, and a bunch of old Leica R lenses that I still shoot slides with, that I use on the 1100D.

So for me, a compact Hi ISO FF EVIL system that can take legacy MF lenses, at a good price, resolution not so important.

Err, there are. The rear left hand column of buttons next to the display have WB and ISO.

Yeah, they've just moved from the top to the back I believe.

Okay, riddle-me-this. I've been watching the D600 rumours for a while and was prepared to be first in the queue to buy one. Why should I spend the extra $800 on a D800 instead? (And you've been in Switzerland if $800 now qualifies as 'comparatively little' ) It's a serious question, in case I come across as being flippant. I'd like to hear some differing opinions, because most of the reviews I've read online say that the D600 is the one to go for.

I'll miss my gorgeous Fuji colours.

They weren't moved as the layout matches the the D7000, D90, D80 etc. My guess is that Nikon considers the D600 as a consumer/prosumer camera, not a pro camera.

That said, it's more than very possible that the D600 will be viable camera for jobbing photographers.

Re: So... what cool stuff do you think will come out of Photokina 2012 this year?

i have a rather old camera - original Canon 5D. have any of the newer entry level cameras caught up in terms of image quality?

if a 1100D has similar noise characteristics, i'm happy to give up the full frame sensor for a smaller, lighter body.

Sorry should have specified, I meant the layout vs the D800. And yeah, prosumer makes more sense.

The 1100D is massively lighter than my old 10D. Cheap plastic has its advantages. The good thing about the 1100D compared to the 10D, is the fantastic battery life, compact size, fast processing, and decent quality high ISO modes. At 12mp, the pixels are still quite large too. I shoot everything in RAW mode, and then use LightRoom or iPhoto, on on camera processing is not an issue. 3200 ISO is actually kind of usable. On the 10D 800 ISO seemed to have similar noise. Not sure I would swap the 5D for an 1100D though. Here is a 100% crop shot with the kit lens:

Re: So... what cool stuff do you think will come out of Photokina 2012 this year?

I've been looking quite seriously at the D800 (and the Canon 5D III) as a full-frame upgrade to the D90 which I've had for many years. The feeling I've got is that your craft (and lenses, ofc) has to be seriously top notch to take full advantage of that massive sensor on the D800. Another downside is the image file size, which causes me enough workflow issues already

I couldn't believe the specs of the D600, it fits my needs perfectly

You can do a nice side-by-side comparison of the very basic specs of these cameras in digitec:

https://www.digitec.ch/ProdukteVergl...,234213,249391

From a practical point of view the D600 is cheaper, I can reuse all my SD cards (would need CF for the others), it's lighter, and it has those fabulous U1/U2 modes.
