| | Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one? | Quote: | | | | | We have been using a VPN for the last year - connection can sometimes be a bit flaky, but generally it's very good for watching various UK TV services on the iPad.
I have noticed today that the BT Sport app now also uses location services, so therefore blocks me as I am not in the UK. Are there any ways or ideas for working around this? | | | | | I use a router with an embedded VPN https://www.my-private-network.co.uk...rt/dd-wrt.html
Managed to watch the Chelsea Arsenal game today, but I still have a house in the UK with a BT account.

Request for VPN users:
Can you please check if you can see the following videos: http://cort.as/8IMD (France) http://cort.as/8Eqj (Spain)
I'm looking for a VPN provider that supports more countries than UK, USA, and "Netflix countries."
Thanks!

Hi MG - I use the following, which certainly claims to cover other countries (including France/Spain) http://vpnuk.info/shared-ip.html
I cannot check it from work, but it shows 2 servers in France and 3 in Spain, all running at 1GBPS

I would imagine that they're basically doing a NAT for you and shooting you out of different sites based on whatever geo is closest to the target. Probably works fine for HTTP, but I would think that any sort of tunneling/encryption may not work so well..
Cheers!

OverPlay SmartDNS? Fine. I suspect it works as a DNS redirect to a (semi-) transparent proxy.
VPN works as VPN does.

Anyone notice that overplay don't take paypal anymore?
Kind of sucks since using a non USD card will incur a surcharge |

We also use HMA. It's been fine so far and fairly fast speeds. I think it works better when you bypass their software, however.

I use UnoTelly via my ps3 and Smart TV - not a VPN service, but same outcome. It works brilliantly for things like Netflix and iPlayer.

OK! So the Global options for watching TV are:
1. Cable (either via coax cable, ADSL or fibre optic)
2. Satellite (might only be possible from south-facing apartments)
3. Terrestrial (limited choice of channels)
4. VPN
Where I currently live I have got a 110cm satellite dish with a motor on my roof and can pick up pretty much any station I want. Sadly, I know that installing a dish with a motor in Geneva is a story from fantasyland.
The 30MB ADSL connection with English-language package from VTX will cost CHF107 per month. As a downside, this will not include iPlayer access.
VTX's 30MB fibre optic connection will cost CHF89 per month and includes free landline calls. While slightly more expensive, this package would allow access to the iPlayer (VPN provider fee CHF30 per year?). Here the downside is that one's laptop/tablet needs to be running whenever one is watching TV.
Still, I wonder whether a 30MB connection is really sufficient for watching TV via VPN? Are any providers blocking certain ports relevant for the iPlayer or VPN connections?
Will most rental apartments in Geneva have cable TV and fibre optic connections?
For me, option 4 seems most interesting at this stage, also from a cost perspective.
Did I miss anything?
Fabio

I have been using www.privateinternetaccess.com for some time. It has the advantage of possessing servers in many places (US and Europe). When I was in the US I found it was adequate for downloading things to the iPlayer client, but streaming was usually bad. Here in Switzerland, the streaming works well. Conversely, trying to stream Colbert via the US servers worked very badly the one time I tried.
A 30 megabit wall connection is more than good enough for streaming on the iPlayer. This isn't the bottleneck. The bottleneck is probably stuff like the number of hops to the VPN server and the load on that server.

| | VPN Comparison: Express vs Nord
Hi All, decided to take a look at how Nord and Express compare in terms of speed (in CH) and thought others may be interested.
Notes:
Tests 1 & 2 where done conected to speedtest.net Zurich iway server, test 3 the optimal determined by speedtest
ExpressVPN connected to new servers far faster 0-30 seconds with NordVPN 30-60 seconds
ExpressVPN apparently proved they do not keep logs (at least in Turkey)
It may have been my mistake in not refreshing/clearing everything, but Express once said it was connected to an SA server but in fact it was a USA server.
Nord VPN allows you to pick only the country and then automatically selects the fastest server for you, Express VPN allows you to pick the city, but it may be difficult to identify if other server could suit you better.

What do you want to do with it... ?
Most big name companies are wise to most VPN providers now, Netflix etc.. It's a cat and mouse game, you might get AppleTV today but not tomorrow..
Of course if it's for privacy, I dunno, I use PIA, you can even pay anonymously with random gift cards.

Mullvad
1) register online (does NOT require a email address or phone)
2) send cash via old fashioned letter - ensures 100% anon
3) they are rabid pro-privacy and delete logs
4) set up and speed is good
Do NOT trust proton (check their site out, they give lots of info to law enforcement)

Teddy Sagi's Kape buying US digital privacy co LTMI
19 Nov, 2019 12:22
LTMI owns Private Internet Access, which provides VPN services to over one million customers.
Network security software company Kape (AIM: KAPE), controlled by Teddy Sagi, has announced the proposed acquisition of US company LTMI Holdings in a cash and shares deal worth a total of $127.6 million.
LTMI is the holding company of digital privacy company Private Internet Access, which has over 1 million paying customers for its VPN service. PIA employs 65 people, one third of them in research and development. https://en.globes.co.il/en/article-t...tmi-1001307786 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_Sagi
I recommend that PIA customers cancel, and switch to another VPN service. Mullvad is, in my eyes, the best

I use www.Hidemyass.com. We have been very happy thus far and they have very good reviews. And well, let's face it, how good is their domain name?
