Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Wife and I have been using NordVPN for about a year now.

Works well, not US based, and they do a good job sneaking past Netflix's VPN detection so we can often watch stuff on Netflix only available in the States.

I am currently on-line with ExpressVPN set to UK, and do not get this error message?

Express VPN is definitely the best and most extensive I've used, and my only VPN service since about a year. It makes sense not only from a streaming but also a security perspective. Have never had such a problem with EF.

Just click on the ExpressVPN icon if any problems with other sites (I put it on my menu bar on all of my devices, then with one-click you can easily turn it on or off).

Today EF's working! The problem only occurred on my iMac. Phone and pad no problem. Will post if it reoccurs...

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

I use ProtonVPN. It's Swiss-based, actually from CERN where the web started, I believe, and they're very security-conscious, don't keep logs, allow integration with TOR, etc. From their site: "Switzerland is also outside of EU and US jurisdiction and is not a member of the fourteen eyes surveillance network." I've been happy with it and Netflix is no problem. Unfortunately iPlayer often does not work.

I bought a 3 year plan for ProtonVPN and was very happy with everything technically, but not with their billing; when the 3 years was up they automatically renewed it and sent me an invoice, which I didn't like, but as I was going to renew anyway I let it slide but then when I went to pay the bill by paypal I would have had to give them an ongoing authorisation to charge my paypal account, if i paid by credit card* then they said the same would happen. After some back and forth they were unable to offer me a way to pay them without authorising future charges, so I went elsewhere.

*I've since started using Revolut so I could have just paid on a virtual credit card and then deleted the card.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

My NordVPN is up for renewal. I had big issues watching Netflix and BBC iPlayer with it (impossible) but works fine with SkyGo. Before I renew, is there another VPN provider that works with these 3 better? Cheers

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Not a shill or self-promotion. The site is legit for frugal VPN deals.

https://www.citizengoods.com/search?utf8=✓&query=vpn

If you want cheap and lifetime usage of a VPN that works and is usually alright for most users. 4/5 rating type.

I use Fastest VPN and Keep Solid VPN Unlimited for the last 5-6 years. That's just for personal usage, most of the time they work fine, can stream HD video content all day long. They will slow down your internet speed a bit depending on where you are. I believe most accounts come with a 5 device limit for the lower prices.

I'm now with ProtonVPN. Here are the reasons:
  1. NordVPN was fine, however given the secrecy they have (or at least had at the time of renewal for me) around ownership and employees I'm not sure how trustworthy they are.
  2. I wanted to support a Swiss company if possible.
  3. ProtonVPN is significantly more open about who they are.
  4. You get a package deal signing up for both ProtonMail and ProtonVPN.

The downside is that the Proton services are way more expensive.

I cannot speak specifically about Netflix, BBC iPlayer, or SkyGo. I believe you can use ProtonVPN for free for a time and find out.

I use the free version of Windscribe. It works for iplayer. I think the free one is 1GB per month which is enough for me.

when i tried to go to windscribe my browser said....

You cannot visit windscribe.com right now because the website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later.

I use smartdnsproxy dns cacheing rather than a VPN. It is very but not 100% reliable and the router can be configured to force all devices and apps including firesticks, smart tvs etc to use those servers. As you say VPN (I use ExpressVPN) are playing whack-a-mole with the BBC and often their servers get blacklisted.

I was with ProtonVPN for a while but left when they auto renewed and said there was no option for me to buy a subscription via paypal without agreeing to an onging mandate.

I then went to NordVPN that has been fine but a few months ago they changed their logon authentication to force you through a browser login instead of in-app. So the first thing you have to do to hide your IP, is expose your IP, I'll be going back to ProtonVPN.

Which is a bit ironic, given how little they are willing to pay software engineers

Oh well, I guess you don't get rich by being generous, do you?

I currently use Touch VPN, it's a free Chrome extension. Works fine for my needs. I've also heard some good things about Surfshark, but haven't used it yet. Anyone had experience with it?

My one big gripe with ProtonVPN (other than the price) is how they treat paying customers whose payments lapse, or who downgrade to a free plan without being extremely careful about changing their settings correctly beforehand.

And to be fair, I'm not sure you can hide your IP address or protect your internet communications before you log into any VPN provider. You're always going to expose something. However by forcing you into a browser seems to require for you to expose significantly more information than if they did it in app without all the extra browser cruft/spyware.
