Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Hi, all.

I've really been thinking about getting a VPN service. I've read reviews on several and there are a lot of pros and cons to each. But most of the them are also written from a US perspective.

Some of the ones I've looked into are:
  • Hidemyass
  • VyprVPN
  • StrongVPN
  • WiTopia

But there are plenty of othes. I'm interested in general security as well as hop-off servers in the US & UK. I'd also like to have a DDRT capability for whenever I get around to flashing my router (that sounds naughty).

Cheers.

I have used strong VPN for almost a year and have never had any problems. It is set to the US (Washington DC) and I have never needed to switch to the other available cities.

I also have strong vpn set to NY (hmm, did I chose that at the beginning) have had no problems on my computer or iPad. Other (user issue) problems have come up trying to get Netflix to work on my Playstation 3 but have given up as (a) it seems to work on the xbox and (b) it seems netflix doesn't have anything available for streaming that I want to watch

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

I'm on my third year using UnblockVPN.

Multiple UK and US as well as newly added SE (and others I don't use).

Top notch and good value for money IMO...

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

I have Hidemyass, and it serves me well. I agree with Netflix not much to watch anymore after 1 month of subscription. Vudu offers new films for a reasonable price.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

I have been using Strong VPN for the past year or so. It almost always works and streams videos, movies, etc. without any problems. Good customer service when I had to call for install on another computer. I recommend them if you are looking for an IP in US or UK.

Before going with Strong VPN, I tried some free options like HotSpot Shield and they really did not work at all. So I decided to shell out the money and have no regrets.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Lots of strongVPN love here. Does anyone notice latency?

Also, do you use a client on your PC/whatever-device or a DDRT router? Notice any difference between the two, especially in terms of latency?

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

I have used ExpressVPN for a few months, but it is expensive 100usd a year rather than StrongVPN's 55usd. I will give the latter a whirl.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Request for VPN users:

Can you please check if you can see the following videos:

http://cort.as/8IMD (France)

http://cort.as/8Eqj (Spain)

I'm looking for a VPN provider that supports more countries than UK, USA, and "Netflix countries."

Thanks!

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Hi MG - I use the following, which certainly claims to cover other countries (including France/Spain)
http://vpnuk.info/shared-ip.html

I cannot check it from work, but it shows 2 servers in France and 3 in Spain, all running at 1GBPS

VPN Comparison: Express vs Nord

Hi All, decided to take a look at how Nord and Express compare in terms of speed (in CH) and thought others may be interested.

Notes:
Tests 1 & 2 where done conected to speedtest.net Zurich iway server, test 3 the optimal determined by speedtest
ExpressVPN connected to new servers far faster 0-30 seconds with NordVPN 30-60 seconds
ExpressVPN apparently proved they do not keep logs (at least in Turkey)
It may have been my mistake in not refreshing/clearing everything, but Express once said it was connected to an SA server but in fact it was a USA server.
Nord VPN allows you to pick only the country and then automatically selects the fastest server for you, Express VPN allows you to pick the city, but it may be difficult to identify if other server could suit you better.

Re: VPN Comparison: Express vs Nord

What do you want to do with it... ?

Most big name companies are wise to most VPN providers now, Netflix etc.. It's a cat and mouse game, you might get AppleTV today but not tomorrow..

Of course if it's for privacy, I dunno, I use PIA, you can even pay anonymously with random gift cards.

VPN PrivateInternetAccess is now owned by an Israeli so most likely compromised. Get out ASAP.

Teddy Sagi's Kape buying US digital privacy co LTMI
19 Nov, 2019 12:22
LTMI owns Private Internet Access, which provides VPN services to over one million customers.
Network security software company Kape (AIM: KAPE), controlled by Teddy Sagi, has announced the proposed acquisition of US company LTMI Holdings in a cash and shares deal worth a total of $127.6 million.
LTMI is the holding company of digital privacy company Private Internet Access, which has over 1 million paying customers for its VPN service. PIA employs 65 people, one third of them in research and development.

I recommend that PIA customers cancel, and switch to another VPN service. Mullvad is, in my eyes, the best

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

i recommend purevpn, annual subscription covers almost all countries, so you can watch tv for example from anywhere, including ipad and android apps.

I've recently been using a browser add-on called anonymox which seems to do exactly what it says on the tin. Gives a phony IP address rather than actually going via a VPN, but certainly bypasses country-based restrictions.

Works fine and is good enough for me

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

In case you are still still shopping around for a VPN service..
I've been using privateinternetaccess.com (PIA) for a few weeks now and have found it to be totally solid.
Had a couple of questions before signing up and they answered immediately via their live chat tool. Technically, they support pretty much everything, OpenVPN, IPSEC, PPTP, CC-WRT .. OpenVPN client for MAC. No logging. Cheap at 6.95usd per month or 39.95usd per year. Multiple connections supported.
Speed tests have averaged around 20m download so perfectly good for general use.

I'm not an affiliate of anything .. Blah blah blah

Another PureVPN user here. Been using it for the past two years, and am very happy with the price / performance.
