Cablecom - when?

Hello all!
I applied for cablecom about 10 days ago and they say that they first have to check if my building has the necessery infrastructure for their service. They also said that I have to wait up to 3 weeks for this, and any necessery upgrade work to be concluded. Is this normal? Do I really wait about a month to get cable? How long did it take you cablecom out there to get from application to surf?
I am getting the 10/1+phone package btw, they have a 50% for the first year discount which is great!

please no.... don't tell me this is true....

I applied already (3 weeks ago) and I am moving next week to my new appartment, but maybe I made a small mistake in telling them that I only need Cablecom from 1st december on... stupid me.

Re: Cablecom - when?

They called me after two weeks and during third week they came to install an adapter on my cable connection. Week after they send me a cable modem and information when line will be opened. It took totally 4 weeks before line was opened.
Installation was pretty simple, just plug it in and use it. No installation of any software or activating an account.

Re: Cablecom - when?

It was painful in my case. They came to inspect the cable installation 3 or 4 weeks after I registered and swapped my old TV/radio socket for the new style one.

What I didn't expect was that they were there to check the whole building at the same time - remember that Cablecom use subcontractors for this work, and there had been some communication failure here - I was the only one they had informed of the appointment.

Fortunately the owner is easy to get hold of and was around within 15 minutes to grant them access to the other apartments.

After all that, they condemned the installation and said they'd be in touch with a week or so.

I never heard from them on this matter, and neither did the building's owner.

At this point I gave up and joined the local library...

6 weeks after I'd placed the order, the doorbell went, and there was the modem router.

Plugged in the modem, saw the flashing lights, straight out onto the internet without mucking around with the manuals or router

They didn't make you pay anything for the upgrades and installation, did they? Also, was any of the tech guys speaking English?

Probably Cablecom forgot to tell you that their internet service in Geneva is about zero?

Yes they did forget to mention that. Why should I care though. If I actually manage to have my cablecom installed, this could be a good thing since I will have less people to share my cable ring with, right?

Why should you care? If the infrastructure ain't there yet, you're going to be waiting for quite a while.

Thought that'd be obvious...

That's true, but if there wasn't, I don't think they would just mention that I should wait for 3 weeks for the tech team to check my building, right? Also, through their website, and when i actually entered my address, the result was that Hispeed Internet, Digital Phone and Basic TV are available. Shouldn't the online system notify me otherwise, so that I wouldn't proceed to applying?
I really hope you are not right by the way, or I am switching to Bluewin tommorow

Re: Cablecom - when?

Is it normal? Yes. Cablecom Customer Service is awful. Do they care? Not a jot. Until you say you no longer want their service and cancel the appointment / prospective contract. Suddenly they've found a free space for the engineer... funny, eh?

If you mean the physical installation, no. On the software side I didn't need any help.*

The only time I've talked to their support was when a German friend was calling them and didn't understand the technical side of things too well. The support guy had no problem switching to English for my benefit when I took over the call.

* A month or two later, I did find a later version of the router firmware out on the net (open source and freeware, for those interested), and installed that successfully.

Re: Cablecom - when?

I am probably the only person on this forum who can say this, but... I had really quick service from Cablecom. I was online in less than 10 days, including checking the connection in my apartment.
I phoned them 2 days after registering to make the appointment and after that there was no problem. After reading some other discussions in this forum I get the impression my experience might be somewhat unique!
Also if you decide to get a wireless router for your cablecom internet connection, I would recommend looking around the forum for some more information: I made the mistake of buying a random router at Interdiscount, only to find out it would not be suitable. Cablecom sell one for 100CHF or so.

Well, 10 days have already passed so I am surely not getting the same here. I already have 2 routers, including one I used to use with my cable connection in Edinburgh 2 years ago. In which city are you?

Re: Cablecom - when?

It took them 8 weeks to install my cable connection when i moved to Zurich....i was a very dissatisfied customer Apparently, everything was being handled in perfect normality as i should have given them a 3 month notice for my move.... By the time technician knocked on my door, i already had Swisscom's ADSL up and running for a while (took me 72h between placing the order and getting the modem and router in the mail).

Oh, and Cablecom customer service. That is beyond bad. It is an encyclopedia of mistakes and mismanagements. If you want to lose a customer, learn with those masters....

Oh crappy - one year has gone and i still get when i remember those days....

How much notice did you give them - I'm moving in the New Year so maybe I'd better get on with it now.

No, your experience is not unique. There are two of us ! We arranged our Cablecom connection whilst still in the U.K, picked up the modem from the post office when we arrived, plugged it all in and away we went, phone and all.
The only problem we had was with the supplied Installation disc - it crashed our PC. Don't use this - set up manually (I think this last bit has been mentioned by someone else on this forum).

We used a bog-standard Netgear wireless router with no problems.
