Phone for living in France, Working in Switzerland

I just moved to Ferney-Voltaire with my wife, and need to find a phone carrier to use. I couldn't find quite the answers I was looking for in this forum yet, so I decided to post a new thread.

Mostly we will be texting each other or doing short calls from Switzerland to France and vice versa (mostly for emergencies). Because of the limited nature, I assume that pre-paid French SIM cards from Orange would be the best way to go.

But I am finding that one person calling/texting from France to a French number roaming in Switzerland is very expensive. Is there a better option? Would it be worth it to get two French SIM cards and two Swiss SIM cards, and switch them out when we change countries (so that instead the call would be from a French number in France to a Swiss number in Switzerland)?

Also, I have tried to find out from Orange how long pre-paid SIM cards last, but have been struggling. I've heard ~10days/euro you load the card with. I've heard they last up to 2 years, and so am unsure which to believe. Does anyone know how long the pre-paid SIM cards last?

I am really sorry if this duplicates information on this forum, and would be perfectly happy being linked to another thread that answers this. Thanks.

No perso experience, but was interested in the answer so tried googling "frontalier mobile phone" and came across this thread and website that may be of use.

Re: Phone for living in France, Working in Switzerland

In French http://blog.travailler-en-suisse.ch/...ontaliers.html, but one poster was not too satisfied with transatel a year ago, otherwise most seem to opt for two phones and a French and Swiss subscription.

A more blingy option is dual sim phones or phone adapters, but still two subscriptions.

Some lock the respective phones to the providers others dont. Everyone seems to say take great care with data roaming.

You might be lucky and have Swiss coverage in your usual French locations or vice versa, which may be more likely as the French operators are allowed more powerful. Signal boosters do exist too, so try one if marginal.

As I said I was curious as I travel to South Africa frequently for work and would like a slicker setup.

Re: Phone for living in France, Working in Switzerland

a friend ours lives in St Genis and works in Meyrin and she uses a Swisscom mobile ...
ok she says she rarely uses the mobile in France but she told us ( last year? ) Swisscom was the best rate even when it picks up Orange near her home on some occasions

Cool, thanks. Those links had some helpful comments. I think for now I will get the two French sim cards, and see if I am able to get service from the French side while in Switzerland.

Orange switzerland used to have a PAYG solution for Switzerland & border countries, however their coverage is generally crap.

Re: Phone for living in France, Working in Switzerland

I don't use it much these days, but keep an Orange contract going at minimum rate 'just in case'. My normal phone SIM is work-supplied in CH.

But before I had a work one, I used it a lot more, and used an option which cost, I think, an additional 5 eu per month, but meant that all Swiss calls and texts were price as if they were in France.

http://sites.orange.fr/shop/forfaits...ption_OPP.html seems to cover it.
