Chromebook - does it make sense?

Samsung have just released a svelte, Macbook Air-ish Chromebook for the remarkably good price of $249 or 209 (available for pre-order in PC World). For those who do most of their work in the (google) cloud, this seems to be a very good option. And contrary to what I first thought, Google Docs and quite a few other Apps do also have an offline mode, so you don't need to be connected for everything.

The question is, would you not just be better off with a Netbook running Windows 7/8, or is this a better option for travelling, surfing/typing etc.. IMHO the low weight, long battery life, instant on, fanless CPU, growing Chrome App ecosystem etc.. make it quite compelling i.e. I may have to pick one up in two weeks when I'm next in the UK

Re: Chromebook - does it make sense?

Ooo. I like that. Looks good for surfing in front of the telly, when the lappy is to big, too noisy and too warm (and the Sony battery dies after about 3-5 minutes) and the iPad keyboard is not really up to the job for a jobbing moderator. At that price it's cheap enough to just have as a toy while I do proper stuff on my proper computer.

Lightweight - I used to do most of my modding on an iPhone 3G

Back on topic though, I'd personally find it too limiting for a lappy. Good price though, but I can't help feeling that a netbook with Windows would offer greater flexibility for more or less the same price bracket. Maybe even a Android tablet would offer more. I won't bring Apple into this as they are way out of this price range.

For on the go stuff or tele browsing I'll stick with my iPad for now.

They are palming this off. It's clearly a Macbook clone in looks etc. The keyboard style and layout is ripped off from Apple. Queue another court case.

Re: Chromebook - does it make sense?

The price is kind of miraculous considering what you get. It's limited, but can be a smart gift for the more virus-prone and tech-clueless family members. You can only buy them so many 1500 CHF laptops which they end up rendering unusable in less than a year's time before enough is enough. I think it does a good job of filling that niche.

Re: Chromebook - does it make sense?

this is the commoditisation of the internet. 99% people don't want a computer. they want to use the internet and email and this machine lets them do that without having the maintenance hassles of a 'real' computer.

kinda like an ipad with a keyboard.

between mobile phones, tablets and these dumbed-down laptops - i think the future of traditional PCs will be bleak.

Re: Chromebook - does it make sense?

Yeah, but that's not always a bad thing. I would argue in most cases it's taking away full-fledged PC capability from people who wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.

Not sure, but I can install Citrix receiver which would let me log into my work network, use Office, Outlook, Acrobat etc... I can also do that with my iPad but the lack of mouse and keyboard makes it useless.

Interesting...

Samsung Chromebook uses a low-power processor, Samsung's Exynos 5 Dual, which is built on ARM's new Cortex A15 design.
That means it should have more than enough grunt to pump out 1080p material, which is more than you can say for most Intel & AMD-based Netbooks!

They're not that similar. If anything, it looks more like a thin version of my Vaio.

I did explicitly refer to keyboard layout and style...

What do people think about the Microsoft Surface tablet? Looks interesting with the keyboard and the Windws 8 version seems to be a fully functional computer pretty much.

Too expensive would be my answer.. its $499 for the basic (non-intel) Surface tablet + $100 for the keyboard. For me the sweet spot would be $399 for the tablet with keyboard, thats whats needed to wrestle market share from Apple.
