Samsung galaxy Tab 8.9 Wifi - ICS

Hey Guys,

I have been waiting for the official ICS upgrade for the Samsung galaxy Tab 8.9 Wifi model for what seems like ages now... Seems like the wait is never going to end.

Any insight into when this is coming????

have you looked on the Migros purchase thread for the perfectly good links into XDA to tell you how to do it with Odin?

Probably never, your tablet is >1 year old and therefore obsolete as far as Android tabs go. The slightly better news is that you can hack ICS onto it, I have the same one and its not too difficult.

There is a port of CyanogenMod 10 [even newer than Ice CReam Sandwich, because CM10 is based on JellyBean]. If you feel a bit adventurous you can follow the installation instructions from XDA developers. Start here for the official builds of CM10 for Galaxy Tab 8.9:

I am tempted to do this. But am slightly worried that i dont brick it (i thin the term means that if i dont do it right... my device becomes useless )

Re: Samsung galaxy Tab 8.9 Wifi - ICS

It's easy. But long-winded.

Get Clockworkmod 5.5 and 6.0.0.8: https://www.dropbox.com/s/n56o8zn5kr...wm-times-2.zip (I'm sharing the files I had to dig for). You flash 5.5 (the tar) using Odin 1.85 (put it in PDA!!!) and then copy the zip to the device and flash CWM update from CWM itself.

Once you are running CWM 6, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1777398

You need gapps from goo.im

First boot will be long. Have patience.

I doubt the OP is that experimental of nature... CM10 wouldn't be his cup of tea, especially when it is still in the nightlies phase... I would recommend flashing the official 4.0.4 for now if he can get his head around that... let him leave CM10 (or AOSP) till at least the first release candidate is out...

EDIT: oh and by the way, OP, this thread is redundant as you already know... you could have continued in the same old thread... please do so from the next time onwards...

I agree. It's stable and if you like Touchwiz, it's perfect.

No brainer , Samsung support is pants - you've got to flash the xda ROMS.

You're right that flashing custom ROMs, especially in the nightlies phase is not necessarily everyone's cup of tea. Having said that, I've been CM10 nightly builds for almost a month now, updating almost every day to the latest image (through the cyanogen updater that is part of CM10 now). Once the initial image is installed updates are just a matter of pressing 'yes, update' and rebooting once.

The main reason I point people at non-stock images is that Samsung, Sony and a few other vendors take far too long to push over-the-air updates. ICS has been out for more than 1.5 year now, and they're offering Honeycomb as the official version! This means that no matter how fast Google moves forward with innovative and cool stuff, the phone will be lagging behind by almost two years.

So there's definitely a non-zero risk at running CyanogenMod or other non-stock ROMs, but the balance between "stay two years behind" and "stay safe" is always worth evaluating.

It is remarkable to me that the 3rd party manufacturers have almost no loyalty or interest in promoting the long term future of the platform. Google should demand that handset manufacturers commit to at least 2 update cycles per handset model, and that they release them in a timely manner (the year old ICS is still being rolled out to different handsets.. what an almighty mess).

Re: Samsung galaxy Tab 8.9 Wifi - ICS

Hey All,
I went for ICS on my own... Not ready for Jellybean just yet!
All the Stock ROMs for GT P7300/P7310 are available on the below site.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1582943
I went through a great tutorial available on below link to understand exactly what i was going to do. I recommend you do this as well. The link also provides all the necessary files in the toolkit.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1406137
Initially, I flashed directly to US ICS version. However, this led to a problem. On locking the device and unlocking again, a garbled fuzzy display came up and it was impossible to work with the tablet. I have press the power button for a long time to restart the table. It worked till i locked the device again.
Then I followed the instructions given by varun.c.jain and Castro to fix it
The steps are listed below...
1. Flash with a stock US ROM (UELA3) using ODIN -- My device got stuck in an endless reboot loop at this step. I just went on to the next step.
2. Wiping data/factory reset. I started my device once after this. The usual setup stuff like setting up the wifi and google account etc.
3. Flash with the ICS ROM (UELPB) using ODIN
Seems to be working gr8 now. Thanks to all for the tips and suggestions.

P.S. The reason I started a new thread was because I could not find the installation instructions from the old migros. Probably because they were were amongst the posts about the various deals. Maybe this thread can be used for all the upgrade related posts for this device.
