iPhone 4s data usage issue

So, I gave my wife (as a present) an iPhone 4s with an orange subscription earlier this year. All in all pretty good phone (and deal), however we've always had issues with the data usage.

Her subscription includes 1gb of traffic and right off the bat she was using quite a lot of it (we ocassionally got a notification from orange that she's close to the limit). Since she somehow never actually hit the limit, I didn't look into it, strange as it seemed (since she's not really surfing a lot).

Then, two months ago she actually hit the limit, at which point we disabled the 3G and tried to identify the cause. Some potential culprits included mail account (linked to a heavily spammed one ) and iCloud. So I disabled both and waited for the bill to come so we can turn on 3G again.

Said and done, than one month ago she hit the limit again. This prompted me to investigate further and, after some research, turn off more stuff, e.g. Apple anonymous log reports (or whatever it's called). At this point I also reset the network config and usage, to be able to see how it would evolve.

Fast forward to a week ago, wife tells me she hit the limit again! She also told me she disabled 3G. Tonight, with some free time on my hands, I thought I'd check: she actually disabled wifi, not 3G, and it looks like there already 220mb over the 1GB limit and 22chf extra to pay. This is backed up by myaccount on the orange website, which actually lists the traffic day-by-day (although sadly no details on its nature). The list shows:
- 2mb yesterday 29th
- 300k 28th
- 2mb 27th
- 15mb 26th
- 235mb 24th
- 148mb 23rd
- 37mb 22nd
- ...low-ish again...
- spikes again on the 19th, about 300mb, 18th 135mb, 12th 100mb etc

HOWEVER, upon checking the usage statistics for mobile data, I see this:
- sent 11.7mb
- received 201mb

So, it looks nowhere near the 1GB limit. The question is now, what's going on? Is there really some backdoor apple thing syphoning data out without having it recorded in the usage statistics OR are Orange taking the pi$$?

I just wrote Orange a message asking for help, but I'm curious if anyone else ran into this.

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

I am using an Iphone 5 but until a couple weeks ago I also had a 4s. Never had problems going over the limit. I have 500 mb and I use every day email, facebook, whatsapp, skype (with video) and never used more than 250 so something is really off.
The numbers you are mentioning are very high for one day use and it is weird because you have been watching the usage given in the phone. I usually figure out what the problem is...I have two teenagers using data plans so I am a freak when it comes data usage but your situation is weird.
What it could be: the phone backingup to Icloud (but you turned it off), apps that use data a lot (an app that tricked me was iTheme...lots of pictures). Email, even spam, if it does not have huge attachements...should not be an issue. A suggestion would be to walk into a Mobile zone shop and have them look at the phone. Do not go to orange...they want you to go over
Hope this helps!

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

Do Orange cut from 3G to hotspots?

I have a similar issue with Swisscom;
Preventing Connection to Swisscom Hotspot

Hotspot data use doesn't get counted in the phone's meter, but gets counted toward my monthly data allowance.

Maybe the advice in that thread might help. I've not been able to try it yet because you have to be connected to a wifi hotspot before you can forget it.

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

We had this a week ago, also with orange on a 4s.

Upon looking into it, we believe the google apps got into a circle and caused a huge download (700mb)

We called orange and they have waived the extra charge

You can bump it to 3 gig per month for an extra 20 CHF. I always hit my 1 gig limit if I'm not on wifi for at least half of the day.

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

I know how much these devices chitter chat in the background, even when no apps using push notifications are running, so I just switch cellular data off until I actually need it.

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

Has this issue been with iOS 5 or 6?
http://money.cnn.com/2012/10/01/tech...age/index.html

I'd say you're maybe using data on 3g when you think it should be using wifi.....

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

I had similar case for August bill on one iPhone 4 user.

Strange thing was that for a few days she had very high data usage (200 - 300 MB) - she has reached almost 9 GB during a month.

I have investigated it but couldn't find a root cause. I think this iPhone went in some kind of loop trying to send/receive data from some application.

BTW: Orange refused to wipe the cost.

EDIT: iOS 5 was on the iPhone: Orange told me that the highest costs was from Navi, Viber and Facebook.

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

I've received an answer from orage: basically they recommend upgrading to more traffic.

I now wrote them back asking for a solution to the problem, not to a solution to the EFFECTS of the problem.

What other options do I have if they fail to help? Can I somehow cancel the contract on these grounds?

p.s.: the phone is updated to the latest ios6 version.

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

I'd recommend this:
Connect the iPhone to iTunes and restore to factory
DO NOT then restore from a backup
Do some work to get certain settings back
Install only the apps she needs (really needs) and make a note of what was installed when
Favor wifi over 3g
Install a traffic monitor (examples: http://techpp.com/2012/07/20/ios-dat...-monitor-apps/)

I bet this fixes it.

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

Of course they want you to upgrade
Actually unless you prove that it is because of orange network...they are not responsible how you use your Iphone and I doubt that you could cancel the contract.
I could try tonight to help you out (in Romanian ) so if you are interested PM me and I will give you my phone number. We need to go over every app installed and also the settings...

The problem with the traffic monitor is, I guess, it won't see more than what I see under Usage. And that's way less than what Orange sees

it might be broken down to app and wifi/3g
or you could rely on orange to tell you?

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

Just got this on my FB wall from 9to5mac:

http://9to5mac.com/2012/10/31/onavo-...edium=facebook

Until now, there has been no way for iPhone users to track down which apps on their phones were using large chunks of their data plan without their knowledge. Fortunately, the good folks at Onavo have heard the cries of outraged users on limited data plans and come to our rescue. Onavo Count, a new app from the creators of the data-compression app Onavo Extend, allows users to monitor how much of their cellular data plan each app or built-in service on their phone has used.

And it is free!

Onavo has been doing a good job in the Android space. It's worth a try!

But I am also reading the comments from the article...privacy issues? Justified? Taking your data through their servers? Passwords...groans and thanks from EF?

they have a product which claims to speed up browsing 5x. A bit like Opera mini...their server gets the page and caches it, optimizes it and then delivers it to you.

A big issue? As you have no control on things going across the Internet, maybe not. Someone could be recording your activity whatever.

SSL is the only answer. And has some flaws.

Re: iPhone 4s data usage issue

I had this issue and I suspect that it was the new native Podcasts app.

I switched to a 3rd party Podcast app and deleted my podcasts out of the native one and it seemed to sort itself out. Can't conclusively prove it, but I've not had any trouble since.

Orange were utterly useless, with one clueless call centre agent even telling me I had to physically switch off 3G when I went home otherwise my iPhone couldn't connect to my home WiFi.
