Not true, many software program authors distribute their software for free and actively encourage people to redistribute the software, all at no cost.
Yes, I almost mentioned that in my previous post. Obviously open source, freeware or shareware are the exceptions. Downloading a program like Photoshop, Windows or Microsoft Office though without paying for it is illegal as would be sharing it with someone else.

Exactly. We should distinguish between open source, freeware, shareware and on the oder side the "payware". The first group is clearly legal, but the second group should be theorically legal too, because you are not earning money with it, but I am not sure.

Examples: office, windows, photoshop, ... ¿LEGAL OR ILLEGAL?
Legal. I'm pretty sure. Immoral? - in my view also yes. Stoppable? Doubt it!

Nope, sorry you're actually dead wrong here.

Hypothetically, sure you're not permitted to steal is Switzerland, but the policy of enforcement is what counts. Uploading is strongly frowned upon, but nobody will come after you for downloading - whether it be software, music, video etc. Given the difficulty of proving that you never had a legal copy of what you're downloading is just too difficult, and so is considered a poor usage of resource to pursue.

Isn't it enough if you stop sharing when your download is complete?
While downloading you are also uploading. So it could get you into trouble if using P2P, as that is how it works.

Simple example: Lets say you are downloading a 1 hour movie,
it is big, so P2P breaks it down into 100 little pieces. You quickly download 10 pieces from guy 1, at the same time another 10 pieces from guy 2, etc.

But while this is downloading, the software starts to then *upload* the pieces you just downloaded - to someone else.

I visit watch32.com, which doesn't seem to upload, it just streams to you (which is basically continual downloading)

Thanks, but "megadownload" sites would be legal, if it's like you say.

There are several posts in the first page that have provided correct and complete information. If you're not happy with that, then I'm very curious as to how more replies would grant further authority. If you don't want to listen, then don't ask in a public forum, seek out an official source.

None of those posts mention megaupload.
And the first page of this thread is neither correct, complete or clear.

I am neither happy or unhappy. I asked a question which you clearly are unable to answer without being snide.

If I said I was unsocial and needed behavioral therapy and was a keyboard warrior what in your experience would be the best solution?

Your question was answered politely long ago - the legality regarding copyright downloads is not enforced in Switzerland. Now, if you need an explanation for what a download is, I'm sure google and Wikipedia would be happy to help.

Re: Is Downloading movies for personal use legal here

I'm guessing the law has not changed. A friend used to use newsgroups, where you only download, so perfectly legal in Switzerland (from my understanding) and streaming too then. But as mentioned P2P it is impossible to download without uploading some content.

Re: Is Downloading movies for personal use legal here

I recently got an email from my ISP informing me that they had received notification from a company called authorized to act on behalf of copyright infringement for borrowing American Gods on bittorrent.

The ISP wrote that although they were obliged to forward the notification to me, that I could effective ignore it.

From a legal point of view, there is no need for action.
