Laptop for 11 year old

Can anyone give me any advice on which laptop (net or notebook??) is good for an 11 year old as I am fed up of having to share mine all the time!! He will need it for school work / usual emails etc. / music/ and games such as minecraft....what sort of spec should i be looking for ? Have had a look online and came across 'Pearl' who offer refurbished laptops - anyone ever used them ?
Happy to get any advice as i have no idea about such things !!
Thanks in advance.

Re: Laptop for 11 year old

I have the 721 with ATI Radeon 4255 graphics cards which is perfect for on the go. Dislikes: No bluetooth and short battery life.

I replaced the wifi module and got a bluetooth and wifi combo module (bought it online from Germany for less than EUR20 ). The lappy is easily accessible by the owner in order to upgrade RAM or the module.

As for battery life, I turn off wifi when not in use, and where possible charge up the lappy on the S-Bahn, IR, IC, ICN trains, both local and abroad. It has a small power brick. If required, I hook up an external USB DVD drive.

Works very well when I stay in hotels with an LCD TV with a HDMI input

My movies are downloaded to the HDD and play smoothly both on native screen as well as on the external display - wonderful as a multi-screen device.

Upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB ( RAM upgrade also obtained online from Germany ).

Runs Win7-64 but was removed and had Linux Mint installed - I have Bluetooth audio, HDMI, powerful wifi, Gigabit ethernet if required, VGA output for compatibility, 11.6 inch screen, 3 x USB, SD card slot - all easy to fit into my lappy / gadget bag.

An 11 year old needs a laptop for school? I sincerely doubt it, not for a good few years at least.

Not to mention that giving an 11-year old unrestricted access to the internet raises all sorts of possibilities unless you plan on actively filtering and restricting what he can access, which will not be easy if he is always taking it out of the house. I would keep sharing yours with him so you can control or moderate his use, or get a cheap home PC that he can use for school and that you can monitor centrally.

Re: Laptop for 11 year old

Sutter's kids for example require lappies for school, as do many of the kids who drop into the Skating Hall where I volunteer right after school, with their laptops ( and smartphones ).

Edit: As do other kids with parents on EF

If an 11-year old is required to have a laptop for school then i'm really very surprised, I don't think i'd be comfortable with a kid of that young age having unrestricted access to the internet. It just doesn't seem responsible at all, and i'd also argue not very healthy to have a child so young starting to use laptop keyboards and screens too much.

What is the issue provided you teach them properly and they understand what is allowed and not then there should be no reason why an 11 year old cant have a computer and internet access. Keep them away from auch access and they are more likely to do it behind your back at friends houses since its becoming more normal to have a computer younger. Denying them this is denying them to learn how many of their friends most likely are already

I never said anything about denying them usage of a computer or the internet.

Anyway, i'll shut up now. and answer the OP's question.

-----------------------

If you are set on buying your sprog their own laptop, then buy a 13" as a maximum size. It will do a child of that age no good lugging anything heavier around in their backpacks, they're not strong enough, and if they carry it around outside wrong it could strain their back or shoulders. However a even a relatively basic 13" will be pretty expensive, and the cheapest is 680chf at Digitec.ch. It may be better to try and get one second-hand that will be cheaper and more resistant to careless treatment. I wouldn't go with a Netbook as it's really not healthy for a child to be squinting at a screen like that for hours and could adversely affect their eyesight at a young age.

I'm still a little gobsmacked that a 11-year old child could require one for school, and if that is set to become a trend in schools then I find it a little worrying.

Re: Laptop for 11 year old

"children should" but they just don't

I can't prohibit using a laptop for my 13 years old... she does it anyway. She is very talented, she learnt a lot of skills and she explored a lot on the net.
Yes, there are dangers on the net - just like on the streets.
I make sure we have regular talks about issues. She has faced already to some very inconvenient consequences while doing silly things on FB (bans and reports... )
I explain her constantly about the privacy settings, not to befriend everyone, not to react on everything - she learns this on her way.
What we do we limit the time that she can spend on the net (we are not too succesful and popular with that).

I vote on YES, buy a simple 400 CHF laptop - I would buy a new one. You just can't test everything on it and it is so annoying when it constantly breaks down..

(I have to buy one for my daughter as well - she just took my nice new red laptop and left me with this crappy 6 years old stuff! )

Re: Laptop for 11 year old

Thanks for the useful replies as well as the hopefully well meant criticism. I consider myself a responsible mum and have a very responsible child who accepts that i continually check what he is up to on the computer. Although not a necessity for school as such, he already in grade 6 is expected to prepare some presentations in powerpoint and use the internet for research.......educating them to use computers properly is the important part and which i take very seriously. My children do not sit in front of screens all the time - they are both in sports clubs, play outside whatever the weather in the local woods and are also great fans of good old fashioned board games.........getting the balance right is what counts.

My grade 3 child (aged 8) last week visited the equivalent class in ZIS and was astounded that all children there are given ipads by the school.........now that i would question!

Re: Laptop for 11 year old

The best laptops for kid usage and ease are macs. I would suggest a MacAir. Super light, easy to use, hard to get viruses on and many schools use Macs and iPads nowadays.

Both my kids require access to a computer for school work... My son has asperger syndrome and is required to submit most of his written work as Word documents. Some of the other kids in his class who are not native German speakers have been given access to online tutorials and so on.

My daughter who is 10, has computing as a course this year. They have to pass a 10 finger typing test, show skills in using Word, Excel, document management and so on...

In addition they often get assignments, where they are expected to use Wikipedia etc. to prepare presentations etc..
