well I thought that was the primary purpose of gmail..

what I found interesting is that linkedin gave me some suggestions which it could have only taken from my gmail .

I switched to chrome from firefox because of the speed + saving one click for german->english translation ..
don't know if it is better to trust a not for profit company
LinkedIn always asks for permission to harvest your contacts, you must have pressed a yes at some point

Re: Is Google reading my emails?

We are pretty close to what you could have seen in Minority Report: targeted video ads on the street based on your retina scan...

My advice: use your provider email account (bluewin etc), if you log in with your browser anywhere, make sure you log out fast, do NOT associate gmail-youtube-facebook accounts, possibly do not log in to any of those in a browser environment. If you have to use Gmail use it with an email client and an IMAP or POP3 account. Use privacy browsing and possibly not Chrome and IE, turn off facebook platformapplications (and do not post everything you eat/see/like on FB anyways, because you will defo hate yourself for it in 15 years, but you won't find the delete option any more then).

Just because you're paranoid, it don't mean they aren't out to get you.

It can be done right now (and is, to a certain extent) - it doesn't need a retina scan. Location services running on your mobile phone can pinpoint you.

You do seem rather paranoid; what's wrong with targeted ads? I've found some useful stuff from them. The technology itself is also very interesting to work on.

and log out of facebook as well, if you like your privacy
Or quit Facebook, like I did a couple of years ago

It's a shame about google products, particularly gmail & chrome but they are not a non-profit company...Not even sure they are directly to blame since governments are pressuring companies to infringe on civil liberties & privacy which is an entirely different issue

Best advice is to minimize your digital footprint

Re: Is Google reading my emails?

Google is not reading your emails but rather displaying ads related to what you're viewing in your browser.

Ghostery helps you.

Let's not forget EF tries to bug you with: OpenX, eXelate and Google Analytics.

Google doesn't read them. They forward them all to me and I scan them for sexy gossip and credit card details.

This is not true, it does not depend on whether you view them in a browser or not.

"With personalized ads, we can improve your ad experience by showing you ads related to websites you visit, recent searches and clicks, or information from your Gmail inbox."

If you click on the link I provided earlier in the thread you can opt out of this service.

Google's not exactly a NFP company- they do exist to make profit. They're just not charging you... But they gotta make their money some way, so they cyber-pimp your information to the best cyber-john.
Google NFP
No no I was talking about Mozilla as I was using firefox before chrome proved it was even faster (startup time mostly)

Gmail uses SSL by default when run in a web browser; nobody is reading your email apart from Google's targeted ad programs.
Actually, I believe that mishimishi was referring to encrypting your e-mails by using, e.g., Public Key Cryptography.

That's true. For very sensitive data, you just switch to Thunderbird (for instance), generate a Private-Public Key pair, have the other party do the same, exchange your Public Keys (it's no harm to make your Public Key... "public") and then Thunderbird will take care of the rest.

Bottom line: you will be able to decrypt and normally read e-mails on your personal computers without additional overhead. They will also stay on the Google Server (if you don't delete them), but since they will be encrypted, nobody* will be able to read them, even if they are handed out to a third-party.

*except if P=NP is ever proven. :P

In your dreams I dont for a moment expect google will store content that they are not capable of interogating or that a government investigation cant override. Encyption is a start but it aint a panacea and very few methods that arent able to be broken

Re: Is Google reading my emails?

Hi all,

Just thought I'd add my two cents to this topic.

Google explains how this all works. Much like they scan all incomming mail to see if it is spam before it hits your inbox, they also apply similar techniques to match ads to the "non-spam" email that ends up in your inbox. Then, they display ads based on those results of their scans.

Google reference here:
http://support.google.com/mail/bin/a...en&answer=6603

What scared me was back several years ago (around 2006), Google publicly admitted that they were working on a tool to listen to the audio from the microphone on your computer, and then would analyse what was begin talked about and then display advertisements.

Fortunately, the public outcry then resulted in Google scuttling the project.

However, I am pretty sure I read that it has been partially resurrected in this way: The Google Voice (their integrated service for all your telecommunications) does scan your voicemails which are left and displays ads. I can't find an exact article right now, but here is one that references this:

http://www.gomonews.com/google-appli...ey-from-voice/

Gotta love big brother who uses the motto, "Don't Be Evil", but then has questionable practices regarding personal privacy.

If you just learn to accept that privacy in the age of the internet and cellphones is primarly a myth, you should be able to sleep at night - especially knowing that Big Brother is watching over us all keeping us save from the real bad-guys in this world.
