DAB+ Experience?

Apparently DAB+ is the newest mode of receiving radio, stationary or on the road.

I am curious if anybody has any experience with DAB+. Especially with:
  • How is the reception all over, in the mountains, on the roads?
  • Are there any black-holes worth mentioning?
  • What are the listening options (stations available)?
  • What about any suggested DAB+ receivers?
  • Can the output of the DAB+ devices be cabled to existing sound systems at home or in the car?
  • Would your write home to mom about DAB+?
Thanks for any thoughts and experiences.
JC

Re: DAB+ Experience?

Here's my thoughts on DAB without the "+". I doubt reception is better for adding a plus sign. Reception in Switzerland of DAB in a car is rubbish...

Thanks, read this just before I opened this thread last night (see, search does work ). Read the handful of other threads too.

Since your thread and now, I would think others have picked up on the DAB+ craze and made a purchase. It is not only unsafe to have an extra device in the car, am thinking though if it is secured and tethered to the auto radio through a mini jack, that might work... if it works

What tweeks me a little is the fact that the DAB+ is useless outside of Switzerland. One would think the Europeans audio branch would grind hips with each other to create an outstanding radio system that works all over.

Looking forward to any feedback regarding DAB+ please!
JC

Re: DAB+ Experience?

DAB+ is backwards compatible. So you can receive the DAB stations of the UK (where there are plenty). A few in Germany but the French of course have gone with another system altogether DRM or something.

The problem with DAB in the car is that every tunnel, underground car park and even bridge cuts the signal and it's very slow to find it again. Even switching on isn't instant like FM, it looks for ensembles and faffs a lot...

Re: DAB+ Experience?

Oh boy... then why the massive advertisement campaign and hundreds of new receivers on the market? A new-wave mobile receiver costs (reseller cost) is over 120 Franks. Retail price 230.-.

Surely there is something else here... Taking a step back to AM (bridge and tunnel effect) is taking a step in the wrong direction! Maybe I will get one and see how it works... If you see me reselling it here on EF, then you are aware of my findings

Plus of course the underlying issue that Swiss radio (in any language) is total twaddle with antediluvian play lists interspersed by the odd uncensored rap profanity at like 0800.

Despite respecting your opinion, that does not help with the question at hand.

Can not agree with you more. That is why internet radio is always on in the office and at home, can't beat that! My concerns are on the road and the reception quality.

Re: DAB+ Experience?

Reception is sh**e too, due to that strange Swiss tunnelling obsession!

Re: DAB+ Experience?

Really annoying that they've switched to DAB+....the two DAB radios in the house and the one in my car are now redundant.

The FM reception for WRS is very prone to interference, whereas I rarely lost a signal on my DAB signal except in long tunnels.

WRS has always been on DAB+

I just bought a DAB+ and combined internet radio from Aldi for CHF129. (I expect they sold out within minutes of opening. I was there at 8.00 and was the thriod customer to buy one.) I am very impressed with both DAB+ which seems better than DAB (no bubbling of weak stations) and internet radio. It's BBC Radio 4 in kitchen from now on...
