Newbie needs help getting Sky

HI - i have been reading all the stuff i can on the forum regarding getting sky here in Switzerland. I have just moved into a new house in Chailly and the sky dish is there as is the wiring, so apparently all i need is a box and the subscription. I have a uk address and a bank account that i can use, but my question is , how do you activate the subscription if the dish and box are here in Switzerland and I dont have a uk phone number to call them with? The address in the Uk is parent in laws and they dont have a sky subscription or dish so cant activate there.
I am assuming that ordering a box from the UK is fine so long as you manage to pair the card with the reciever through the phone registration.
What aboutt he companies here that offer the yearly rate to activate your subscription - do you have to buy everythign from them? I really dont mind paying say 100chf or so a year for them to make it all happen (although i am not going to buy the box at 890CHF!) Any help woud be appreciated
thanks
dom

I just called them from Switzerland, withholding my number. Never had a problem.

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

just set it up as you would back home. You may need someone to come by and install the dish at the correct receiver angle, south facing of course. I have a box you can buy.

I've called several times from France, sometimes on a mobile or sometimes a French landline, with no problem. It's not like the box actually needs to be connected, as the activation code is sent out via the satellite link. And if they start asking about connecting the box to the phone to use any interactive or PPV services, just tell them you don't have a landline (sharing house, phone not yours, etc.) and you don't want any of those services.

They may sometimes try and insist on arranging an engineer to install the box, but as you're not going to be on one of their silly contracts you just need to forcefully tell them that the box and dish have been correctly installed by a competent person. And of course that it's already up and working, as it will be, on the FTA channels that don't need a viewing card.

Oh, and they may also try and persuade you that you really need a HD subscription - even if you have a Sky+HD box you do not need this. IMV it's not worthwhile anyway - those channels available in both standard and HD are only just discernable from each other - the biggest picture imprivement I found was moving to a HDMI connector, as SCART seemed to just kill the quality, HD or not.

If you have a UK address you can get the card sent to there's absolutely no point in this.

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

I have heard that you can get a box to preform a callback in Switzerland, over VOIP, but you have to set the modem up as a data modem. PM me for more details!

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

isnt call back only needed for PPV and if you have made a contract that requires the connection of a box for 1 year or have multiroom?

there are ways around the PPV BTW.

NEVER use one of the compaines that make the subscription for you - its a rip off and people often experience huge troubles.

For boxes look on www.AVforums.com I would not recommend buying from ebay as there lots of stories of boxes being dead on arrival or delevoping faults when they warm up etc etc.

best way is to buy a box, phone sky from a blocked number or on skype tell them you have all your own equipment and all you want is a viewing card and have it delivered to the UK address.

But of course you only need a card if you take out a package, if all you want is freesat then no card is needed, just the box.

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

Get a second hand box shipped to Switzerland, ebay is fine for me, although choose a dealer who are sending boxes on a daily basis. Get a card sent to your fanmily in the UK. Get a UK voip telephone number (a box that plugs into your router) which will give you a UK telephone here.

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

Thanks for all the info. I ordered 2 boxes as i want to view in 2 different rooms andf i have 4 cables coming from the sat dish so assume i can have 2 separate tuners.
The question i have is that i am only able to order 1 card from sky per UK address? I can send to 2 different UK addresses (parents and parent in laws) but then to subscribe to the package will i have to give 2 different addresses then? can i not tell them i have a house and a separate granny flat on the grounds with a separate box and antenna, so i need 2 cards and need to set up 2 accounts? Cheers

Nothing to stop you having two separate subscriptions at the same address. In the same name, even. Just explain that you do not have, or want to have, a fixed phone line, because they would normally provide this service via their 'Sky Multi-Room' subscription, but sadly that requires a permanent fixed telephone line so they can verify both boxes are at the same address.

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

current chat going on with SKY:
Welcome to Sky Live Chat Service. A Sky Advisor will be with you shortly. Your chat may be monitored and recorded for training, legal and compliance purposes.
You are now connected with Prosanjit.
Prosanjit: Hello, you're chatting with Prosanjit, a Sky advisor, may I take your name please?
You: hi - i am not an existing sky customer but am looking to set up 2 sky boxes that already exist and are connected to a dish. i dont have a land line (use skype / vonage) so dont want the multi room, I just want 2 separate contracts and 2 viewing cards. how do i go about getting them and setting up the account? i am travelling at the moment buy woudl like to at least get the cards shipped before xmas sdo i can set up after xmas
You: hello - am i still in a chat?
Prosanjit: Hi.
Prosanjit: I will certainly assist you with this information.
You: thanks
Prosanjit: Would you like to get Sky in the same address in 2 different room under your name?
You: yes but i dont want the multi room just 2 separate contracts -
Prosanjit: Let me check that for you, if that's possible.
Prosanjit: Give me a minute.
You: or just 2 separate packages, it can be on the same contract - the thing is that i want to bea ble to have a certina contract on one say, and a different package on the other
You: sorry not being clear - i want to be able to have different packages on different boxes if i want in the same address
Prosanjit: I appreciate your patience.
Prosanjit: I'm afraid as 2 contracts under same name at the same address is not possible.
You: Can i just have 2 separate boxes and cards without the multi room as i dont have a fixed (nor am i planning to get one) landline
Prosanjit: I'm afraid this option is not available with out the multi room connection, If we had this option I would have definitely provided the information about this.
You: I dont believe you. I have a house and a granny cottage. both are at the same address and each have a dish and box in them but are not connected. neither has a fixed line . i woudl like to have a card for each - how does that work?

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

it seems that either I am confused or SKY are saying they dont allow 2 boxes in a house without a fixed line:

You: I dont believe you. I have a house and a granny cottage. both are at the same address and each have a dish and box in them but are not connected. neither has a fixed line . i woudl like to have a card for each - how does that work?
You: hello - do you have a solution?
You: come in.....
Prosanjit: As I have already mentioned that is option is not available, If I had this option why would I say no to you.
You: so i cannot have 2 boxes in a house without a fixed line?
Prosanjit: Yes, That's correct.
Prosanjit: On the same name.
You: that doesnt make sense. what happens if i rent out my basement to a friend and i want to provide sky down there as part of the deal, but i dont have a fixed line I only have VOIP or skype?

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

Thanks Rob1 : here is the final saga:
Prosanjit: The connection has to the name of your fiend and not in your name, As 2 connection under the same house and same address is not an option.
You: s for sky box?
Prosanjit: That's the reason Sky has multi room option.
Prosanjit: If you would like to take the separate connection under some one's name on the same address, That's possible.
You: So if i dont have a fixed line, i can only watch tv in 1 room?
Prosanjit: Yes, But can take magic eye or TV link and through that you can watch Sky in other room as well, But the same channel.
You: why would i want to watch the same channel in 2 different rooms ? and what is tv link or magic eye? You are really telling me it is IMPOSSIBLE unless i use someone elses name at the same address to have sky in different rooms without a fixed line? do you guys not know that the whole world is moving to VOIP and skype - most people just have cell phones now as well and are not bothering with fixed lines at all.
Prosanjit: I have provided the option which Sky has and what's you require to have 2 Sky boxes.
You: so how do i get the viewing cards?
Prosanjit: You need to contact our team at 08442 414141.

Clearly i will try again with another one and phone to get the cards sent to my parents place in the UK!
cheers

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

Why bother asking them?

Just get one contract, then a few days later, give the same details and ask for another contract. Spell your surname one letter different, so that it doesn't crash their billing system.

If they query it, just say you're setting up the second one for a relative who will live in the "granny flat" and you don't want multiroom as there's no phone line there and/or they will move soon and take it with them.

In other words, don't ask them what's possible, just get it.

You can set up multiroom, but both boxes need to be connected to a phone line.

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

SOrry - FINAL to the Sky online chat saga:

You: so just to be clear finally - if i have no phone line in my house (i live in the middle of the moors in Scotland, or am a lighthouse keeper in the hebridies) there is NO way for me to have 2 boxes in the house that show different content on it at different times?
Prosanjit: If you take 2 boxes with Ute Sky package so the same amount which you pay for the first box will be charged fro the second box as you will not have the phone line.
Prosanjit: For example- If you pay 50 for the first box the same 50 will be charged for the second box.
You: that is fine, i never asked about price just whether it was possible, so now you are saying that it CAN be done?
You: so i can have 2 separate boxes, i pay 2x the subscription , and i have 2 cards and i can watch a different chanel in either room?
You: in the same address?
Prosanjit: yes.
You: without a phone line?
Prosanjit: yes.
Prosanjit: If that's ok with you then I will provide you a direct number of the sales team and they will arrange this for you, Is that ok?
You: what about the last 15mins of chat was not clear? this is the question i asked at the begining. how do i go about getting the account set up - do i call the same number?

At least we got there in the end......

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

Also ask yourself if you need a full package in the second room. If you can make do with BBC/ITV, etc then you could use a freesat box.

Heh. Well, you were warned Of course, if you'd had the direct number in the first place you could have avoided the Indian call-centre completely.

Re: Newbie needs help getting Sky

Certainly made me smile at least. Honestly, you'd think they'd jump at the chance of having two separate subscriptions at the same address. Firstly, it's more money for them over the extra +10 a month they get for the Multi-Room package. Secondly, it makes their subscriber numbers look better than they are.
