3GS effectively bricked on move to IOS6

hi, any help appreciated.

so a long (long) time ago I had an iphone 3gs with orange. End of contract they unlocked it, lovely.

I upgraded to an iphone 4 same number meaning my iphone 3gs had no sim in it any more. it worked lovely as an iphone with out a sim at home, for browsing, playing games, everything else you can do with an iphone except make calls. Nothing illegal going on, not jailbroken, just a phone without a sim.

So, upgrade from 5.1 to ios 6. Phone restarts. start of initialization procedure it tries to activate the phone. except it wont because its not got a sim in. And the sim for the iphone 4 is not the same size as the old sim for the iphone 3gs was which we no longer have as the number is transferred so they took the old sim when they gave us the new phone.

So, I havent broken any laws, its my phone, its not jailbroken and Im allowed to use an electric device I own for internet browsing without having a sim in it, but now its bricked because I cant get past activation.

this isnt a rant, its a genuine request for help - I must be doing something wrong here surely. You dont have to legally have a sim installed in a device to upgrade to ios6 surely otherwise everyone else will be in the same boat ? surely there must be a way of getting the device activated without having a sim in ?

thanks

I don't know where you are, Mikers, but I found Swisscom in Lausanne very helpful when I had a problem with a UK o2 sim which had nothing whatever to do with Swisscom.
Might be worth trying there, perhaps when they first open in the morning, and aren't too busy.

Re: 3GS effectively bricked on move to IOS6

Can't you simply borrow a SIM from someone else and use that to activate the upgrade?

I didn't know if activation was tied to sim though Adrian, ie if I put in someone else's sim the phone gets registered to apple as theirs etc.

Maybe.
Ever been to the Apple Store with it?
Also, can't you just buy a pre-paid SIM for it?
You can remove it after activating the iPhone with Apple.

No, its in Geneva and I'm in Vevey.
Buying prepaid sim shouldn't be required to upgrade a software operating system on a device I own.

Re: 3GS effectively bricked on move to IOS6

device will not be registered to a number, it just needs a sim in peform an initial activation.

when it was unlocked did you get an sms from orange and then perform the IOS update?

It was unlocked at an orange shop rob, but that was a good about 3 yrs ago I didn't get an SMS. It then tootled along happily until I went for the iOS upgrade a few weeks ago.

There are clearly a few solutions around, can I just thank everyone for their helpful ideas.

Apple designed their phones so that they only activate when a SIM is in them

You need a SIM.

You can rant and rave all you want, make sure you send all that negative energy to Apple, because Apple made it that way.

PS: ranting and raving wont help. Just put a SIM in it. Any SIM.

Thanks for the input. Perhaps re read the first posting where i point out this "isn't a rant". It can be quite tricky to understand.

The title is misleading.
The 3GS is not bricked; it is working as designed, and is not faulty.
All you have to do is activate it.

Hello mods, several alternative solutions have been suggested which is great. Perhaps now would be a good time to close the thread, thanks.
