None sense series can be cool. I remember my first reaction to Red Dwarf. I still watched and enjoyed it, even though it isn't exactly prime beef quality :P
I really wanted to like Red Dwarf. I tried so hard.

But... Chris Barrie.

Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert)

The only irksome thing about this is that it's the next in line of the BBC's social engineering program. They can only get away with this experiment because their income is guaranteed, with the threat of prison if people don't cough up. The reason we'll never see a female bond (other than it being utterly preposterous) is that a Hollywood Studio would never make such a gamble because people wouldn't turn up to watch it. See what happened with Ghostbusters.

Also because James Bond isn't a shapeshifting alien character.

That's rubbish. The series generates huge revenue from overseas sales. If it's shite, they won't buy it.

By the way JUST LOOK AT THE PUBLICITY IT'S GETTING TODAY!! Everyone is losing their tiny mind over it. A stroke of genius, I tell you.

Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert)

I like Dr Who - hated it as a kid though. Star Wars - I loved 4-6, loathed 1-3 and was so disappointed with Rogue One as to think I'll never bother with the rest.

Red Dwarf is one note - and of its time.

The main reason there will never be a female James Bond (they tried it with films like Salt and Lara Croft) is because I doubt we'd buy such a self-destructive female character.

Ghostbusters worked because it was a full-on piss-take with the backing of the original cast. Plus any film that knowingly casts Chris Hemsworth purely as comedic eye candy (clearly with him fully on board) is going to do well. It appeals to the 21 Jump Street/Bridesmaids/Horrible Bosses fan base.

Well, precisely my point. It's not as if the licence fee is particularly relevant then, is it?

Top Gear might have now lost its mojo but it had a hay-day from 2002 till the Clarkson phenomenon came to an end. Can't be bothered googling the revenue over those years but it ran into millions every year.

Well it is, the BBC is far more reliant on the licence fee than on exporting programs. The license fee is guaranteed income so the BBC can afford to experiment more than a studio can.

Looking forward to the disclosure of BBC salaries on Wednesday. Then there'll be real outrage

The Ghostbusters remake didn't work. It bombed.

The pay of top BBC stars is to be revealed, so we'll see the gender pay gap soon.

Perhaps this Doctor Who Cares shenanigans is an attempt to bury bad news.

This WILL be the story. And not what some of the talentless cretins who appear on Eastenders get paid. Or the 30k appearance fee for MOTD.

I don't get it. The thread is about Dr Who, which you don't watch and now you are making it about the licence fee, (which presumably you don't pay), MOTD, Eastenders and BBC pay. There's a four-way thread split in the making...

It did nearly 230 million at the box office and DVD sales were good. Not so bomb-like.

Anyway, back OT: the purists (mostly men) are going to bitch and whine but the series needs a kick up the backside and this will do it.

On my facebook feed, it's almost exclusively women who are complaining.

Mind, they've never been right since that Scottish bloke passed the baton to the hideous little monkey man.

I don't do FB. Interesting. It is what it us regardless. I bet it doesn't hurt viewing figures, at least for a while. I just want he writing back on track and a decent companion. I hope they don't instantly try to "romanticise" the relationship. I don't need unresolved sexual tension on the Tardis of a Saturday tea time.

Is Chris Chibnall also writing?

Considering it's not on and won't be for at least 7-8 months I doubt it'll make any difference to the viewing figures at all. Most people will have forgotten about the change by the time the new series comes around in March-April next year. Okay, they'll get a brief glimpse of the change at the end of the Christmas episode, but that'll soon disappear from memory too.

Don't bet on it. It'll be hyped to death for the post-Strictly slot and disected thereafter. The viewing figures for at least the first few episodes are guaranteed even if some folk are just watching it so they can pull it apart in great detail.

I thought the new doc was in the Christmas ep.

Yeah, as I said the usual brief glimpse at the end I expect when the change happens. Christmas episode is Capaldi's last.
