Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert 2013)

Alright, it's only a few days left! Hooray!

Does anyone know of a public viewing sort of thing where people can go and watch the episode together? Because the Uncanny Book-Club would like to help out. We've tried to set up our own place, but our reservation fell through. We have one last ace up our sleeve, but even that's not a very good one. So we'd be grateful for a location or people to help out or - of course - show up.

Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert 2013)

The "Adventure in Time and Space" programme last night was interesting. Thought the portrayal of William Hartnell was very well done. Iirc it was the last programme to be filmed at TV Centre before the Beeb finally moved out.

On to Saturday. Still wish it was a more than one episode storyline though. 2/3 episodes per story allows much more time to really develop things. Single episodes feel so rushed.

Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert 2013)

So what were your views:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-25070847

The interplay between the 3 doctors was interesting. I felt John Hurt captured the essence of the original doctors beautifully, so different from what we've seen since they relaunched the series. But I thought there was a real cop-out as far as the Zygons went. One minute they're fighting like hell to take over the Earth and the next everyone's sitting down discussing how humans can share this overcrowded planet with yet another species? Come on, that's no solution at all. Didn't particularly like the Elizabethan aspect either and the "wedding" was just ridiculous.

Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert 2013)

I loved it, mostly. The three doctors together worked well, Billy Piper as the 'Moment' was a great idea. The Queen Elizabeth thing, I agree, was not so great.
And the after party? Apologies for suggesting people watched it. It was, quite frankly, apart from Matt Smith, rubbish! A load of old companions, and old Doctors. Sylvester McCoy was just embarrassing!

Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert 2013)

Oh, I quite liked him as the Doctor. Peter Davison was the worst one to me. Patrick Troughton, and the two Bakers (Tom and Colin) are my favourites with Jon Pertwee also in the running. Really nice to see Tom in a cameo role last night.

I suspect ones perception depends on who you grew up with... My favourites were Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker (I'm a late 60s child!). But I also think all of the doctors since the relaunch have been exceptional.

Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert 2013)

I enjoyed the 50th anniversary Episode - what really pushed it over the top was when Tennant's Doctor went into his Tardis and said "We have to change our destination.. I don't wanna go.." Nod to how he regenerated (still the best regeneration imo)!

Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert 2013)

As there is spoiler in the title ........

I grew up with DW and remember episodes with William Hartnell, although Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee were the best.

However, although this was the 50th year celebration, wasn't it cancelled by the BBC after Tony Hart's friend finished?

Then, despite a silly one one off that I saw in the States in the mid90's, only resurrected many years later, when it crossed over the Severn?

Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert 2013)

Yes it was cancelled, and to be honest at the time I was very glad!
Since Christopher Eccleston appeared on our screens a few years ago though, I am over the moon that it came back. Could have had a lot to do with Mr Eccleston and David Tennant .
I suppose the celebration was for 50 years since DW began (and yes, I remember William Hartnell - just .)

That was a pilot, hoping to kick of the franchise again. I've got it on DVD and watched it recently. McGann was a pretty cool Doctor. It kind of bridges the gap between classic and new, in look and feel. I enjoyed McGann's second appearance...
