Urgh, I hated Matt Smith showing up at the end. Unnecessary syrup. Plus Capaldi showed more range in 80 minutes than Smith did in his entire tenure. Absolutely brilliant. It also seems that Clara is finally developing a personality which is nice.
The stories are always helped by longer running times, so I hope we don't simply drop back into frantic racing about to cover gaping plot holes next week. Having said that, I'd happily watch Capaldi reading the telephone directory for 45 minutes...

Loved the re-appearance of Matt Smith. By doing that, it reinforces the continuity that the Doctor is still the Doctor. Classic line "it was me speaking to you" (or something close).

Not bad. Not sure it really warranted a 1hr20min time slot though. Felt there were a few missed opportunities to show the quirkiness of the character. The "I'm Scottish" for example, I think they could have done something more interesting in his reaction to that.
Lucy_who, don't expect the rest of the series to be that length. It was a special introductory episode, the rest will be the usual 45 minutes. Though like you I hope they won't continue the frantic dashing around and rapid speech syndrome it seems to have sunk into with Tennant and Smith. Part of that is the fact they insist on running one episode stories most of the time so don't have time to develop the storylines properly. Season finale will be a two-parter so maybe that will be decent.
Horror Channel on Sky have been running some of the early Dr Who episodes recently and you can certainly see the difference having time to develop a storyline makes.

Some reactions from press and fans. I agree, Capaldi and Coleman are good, but the story as usual let them down. http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-28916033 |

I think it was a good introduction for the new doctor, it's not easy to *leave a doctor for another* (and also to get used to how he speaks...) but I already appreciate him, which wasn't the case when Matt took over Tennant (my fav. doctor so far). I have great hope about that new doctor.
story was nice, but I always like those stories.
But I will need some times to get used to the new opening sequence... (which is good by the way)

I admit I'm an old-fashioned fan of the old style 4 x 25minute stories, and I think new Who mostly needs to done as 2-parters.

Yes, I quite liked the new opening title sequence. Evidently a fan designed them.
The problem you have with doing multiple episode stories is the fact that the number of episodes per season has drastically shrunk. From Hartnell's and Troughton's eras when they did between 39 and 45 episodes per season it went down into the 20s then when Colin Baker took over shrunk again down to 13 and there's it's stayed since. Frankly I'd much rather have 40+ episodes of DW than any of the crap that passes for Saturday night entertainment these days.

I love the new titles, but I'm not keen on the remix of the theme tune. It seems to have lost it's "oomph"

| | Re: Dr Who (Spoiler Alert 2013) | Quote: | | | | | Sadly I have to go out this evening
I recently got the sunrise TV service so for the first time I tried the programme saving option.
First glance it looks very good. I found Dr. Who in the TV programme guide and clicked on it. Then it asked me if I wanted save it and when I aswered yes it asked me if I wanted to save tonight's episode or the whole series. Opted for the whole series - now to see if it works!! | | | | | Did not save did it!
I attach a screenshot - I would appreciate anyone familiar with the system looking at the screenshot and suggest what could be wrong?
Thanks

Thanks | | | | | It is being repeated at 2.20 am on the 28th on BBC 2. Practise setting your recorder a few times before then to make sure you've got the hang of it.
Alternatively watch it on Zattoo. You'll be able to watch without a subscription for a few days.
Personally I was happy to be out last night as I can't stand Doctor Who but appreciate there are a lot of fans out there.

But you did miss the Fri. evening repeat on BBC 3 at 20.45 - a refresher for Sat. evenings new instalment.
Would also recommend Zattoo as a fall back - unless you have a sub. you need to set the record option in advance, and have 20 days to watch, before it goes.

However I had a back-up plan
With sunrise TV you can watch programmes up to 7 days after they were transmitted. I added BBC to the list of channels for this option and I was able to watch Dr Who today
Not sure what I thought of it to be honest! Somehow lacked pace and cohesion, reminded me of the first white haired Dr Who who often seemed to forget his lines. It was originally launched as an educational program; teaching children about the past. They even had a couple of teachers along in the Tardis who would give short explanations about the Aztecs or whatever.

I definitely can say I found my second favorite doctor.
I like the way Capaldi took over the character and I find the series even more enjoyable to watch.

Peter Capaldi is a great Doctor, I love the eccentricity he brings to the role.
