Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

I bought the Xperia Z1 Compact today and I'm really happy so far.
Of course Google Now Launcher was the first app I installed, so I now have a pretty clean interface.

My contract's up for renewal in April but I have no clue which handset I'll get.

According to some early hands-on reviews, the S5, again, suffers from lag. It remains to be seen whether the final version still has that.

The new HTC One looks promising but still has the same low-res camera. I know, I know - sensor size is more important than pixel count, but 4 megapixel just isn't enough.

that leaves the Z2, which looks great but is quite heavy and it remains to be seen whether Sony has fixed the over-zealous camera software.

In the end, I'll see what's cheapest with a contract extension, I guess.
The G2 got a KitKat update, you know.

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

As much as I love annoying him, I'm only half-joking. Did any non-Nexus phones get a KitKat update in a timely manner? I see it's only just rolling out on the HTC One in the UK now. The Z1, which was released at the same time as the G2, only just got it as well. LG's sins don't appear to be more egregious than other manufacturers during this update cycle. If your standards are that high then it's Nexus or nothing, but that isn't dawiz's case anymore. His harem of smartphones wouldn't be so bad with the G2 if he's just looking for the cheapest phone with no lag.

My G2 performs faultlessly and completely lag free with 3 day battery life on its current software, if anything things could only get worse with Kitkat so I would actually be inclined to wait even longer for the all clear from the G2 community (as much as that would probably irritate Porsche et al )

It doesn't irritate me at all that the LG et. al are still taking almost 6 months to get their updates.

It makes me happy in the knowledge that although the Nexus 5 has some disadvantages compared to the G2 (only really the battery to be honest), I can live with having to charge my phone every night before bed but I would get irritated if I had to wait 6 months for an update.

That's just me but each to their own.

Available in Switzerland starting this Saturday (in Swisscom shops) and on April 4 everywhere else. Swisscom wants 899.- without a contract (and still too much with an extension). I've more or less made up my mind and will probably go for the HTC One. All the new phones have downsides again - cheap build quality and (reported) lag with the S5, heavy (Z2) or low-res (albeit high-quality) camera (HTC One M8). I don't want lag and while the Z2 seems very attractive, I've decided to go with something lighter this year. So I'll wait until April 4 when I can extend my contract and will get the One (unless I reconsider :-)

EDIT: scratch that - the M8 weighs almost exactly as much as the Z2, which (for me) is decidedly too much. Which would leave the S5 - I'll wait for some useful reviews come in.

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

Why would a G2 owner care that much about 4.4.2 since the phone already works fine?
We are not talking some miraculous change here...

Beauty is most definitely in the eye of the beholder. Unless you're a gamer the front facing speakers are a waste of front real estate, and with a strip for the HTC logo and another on top for the soft keys, you're already a good inch in before the screen starts.

Since my thing is lovely large screens with minimal bulk, I already dislike the HTC. Still think the Sammy is ahead on everything but build quality, and I could live with that.

Anyway, this would be my dream handset and I could see one of three companies making it.. Samsung, LG or Sharp

Which model are you referring too?

For me:

Original iPhone: Never had or touched one so can't comment
iPhone 3GS: Horrible build quality. I got about 3 replacements due to the plastic cracking
iPhone 4 + 4S: Beautiful devices. Very heavy. Antennagate
iPhone 5 + 5S: Scuffgate

You do realise that Apples screens are almost an inch smaller, right? This obviously decreases the overall weight due to a smaller body. if an iPhone had a 5 inch screen then it would weigh a similar amount.

What does screen size have to do with things?

The question of weight in our generation of phones is hugely exaggerated, imho. What do +/- 20grams have to do in a mix where curves and in-the-hand fit and comfort, touch are alright? Me thinks this is just nit picking on some excellent products.

EDIT >> Nice side to side listing of the key features of the current flagships (as in, valid for the coming few weeks, LOL)

Completely agree on this, it makes me laugh every time I see a man complain about a few tens of grams of weight in their pocket or hand extra. I mean come on, really...

If you compare a Lumia 920 with a Galaxy S4, the difference is quite big. The S4 you can hold for hours without an issue whereas the 920 is uncomfortably heavy. Comparing this to 80s telephones doesn't really work - those bricks you used for placing 3-minute phone calls whereas today, smartphones are used for lengthy gaming sessions etc.
