What does screen size have to do with things?

The question of weight in our generation of phones is hugely exaggerated, imho. What do +/- 20grams have to do in a mix where curves and in-the-hand fit and comfort, touch are alright? Me thinks this is just nit picking on some excellent products.

EDIT >> Nice side to side listing of the key features of the current flagships (as in, valid for the coming few weeks, LOL)
http://www.cultofandroid.com/55606/h...z2-comparison/
well, 20g can represent a 20% (or more) increase in the weight of a phone! I went from the N4 to N5 and this was just a 9g weight saving, yet it feels noticeably lighter and nicer to hold (though this may also be the shape and material).

ok, it isn't going to be so heavy that you can't lift it, but for i while i had 2 smartphones, an every day phone and a smaller, lighter one when i didn't want to carry my normal phone (OK, at the time, my normal phone weighed 180g, so more than the current crop of phones).

Look, unless you have this watch on your wrist as you type complaints of 20g heavier smartphones with 5 inch screens, you are just trolling. If you DO have above watch, I'd like to buy you a beer, take a selfie using my exorbitantly heavy smartphone (163 grams) with you and your watch. Deal?

If you compare a Lumia 920 with a Galaxy S4, the difference is quite big. The S4 you can hold for hours without an issue whereas the 920 is uncomfortably heavy. Comparing this to 80s telephones doesn't really work - those bricks you used for placing 3-minute phone calls whereas today, smartphones are used for lengthy gaming sessions etc.
I you are literally holding your smartphone for hours at a time in your hand, then you are doing something wrong. There are gamepads out now for lengthy gaming sessions, and if playing games or watching movies etc then it will generally be with your arms or the device itself resting on a lap or a table. I cannot think of many instances where it will be held for more than 1 or 2 hours in your hand, and even then for such uses it would be both hands as opposed to one.

My G2 performs faultlessly and completely lag free with 3 day battery life on its current software, if anything things could only get worse with Kitkat so I would actually be inclined to wait even longer for the all clear from the G2 community (as much as that would probably irritate Porsche et al )
Coming back to this post. I've been reading some very bad things about the 4.4 update for the S4. So Castro is wise as always

Speaking about the S4, you can get it now for 399 CHF. Do you think it's a good deal?

Not, not when the Nexus 5 is the same price. Just for the faster and lag-free Snapdragon 800 processor alone.

interdiscount have 10% off all devices today excluding iPhones, funnily enough but that puts some of the phones in attractive territory. The xperia z1 compact at 460CHF is a mighty deal in my opinion

With one more day before it goes into the shops, I was wondering if any of you decided to buy (or pre-ordered) the Samsung Galaxy S5?

I'll wait for the first reviews to come in. I'm especially interested in the performance. I refuse to buy yet another laggy device from samsung

The reviews have been coming nice and steady over the past few days now and they are all very positive. no lag and no noticeable issues with the touchwiz either.

Had a quick look today at it in Interdiscount and it was very nice and I felt very comfortable with it, quickly played a 3d game and its response was very impressive!

one can also get it with Coop mobile. 149 upfront and 29.9CHFx24 months (Total 866.6CHF) or 0 upfront and 44.9 x 24 months (Total 1077.6CHF).

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

Either the online retailers haven't updated their inventories yet, or the S5 is essentially unavailable here. Mobilezone lists it as "next delivery in about a month". Seems like I'll have to wait a long time before I can check one out at the store.

go to an interdiscount or mediamarkt, they have them on display! Fust only had the empty slot when I went to them.

Edit: only the gold flavour will be arriving later to Switzerland!

pretty much everyone likes the HTC one better and I would also agree, the misses has HTC one but I have an issue with the non-exchangeable battery and its also heavier plus the company is not on very solid grounds at the moment!

Well, the One M8 weighs only 15 grams more than the S5 - the S5 isn't exactly a light phone, either.

I agree, however, that HTC might not be around forever.

What bothers me about the M8 is the soft buttons. They're effectively turning it into 4.7" handset in most apps. And for that, it's way too heavy. I don't mind the battery. Yes, it can't be replaced, but it also lasts extremely long.

On the other hand, the M8 seems to be considerably faster (in terms of GUI fluidity) than the S5. The S5 doesn't seem to lag the way the S4 used to, but a lot oft the Snapdragon 801's power is wasted in Touchwiz again.

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

I dislike HTC's UI, even more than Samsug's UI.
If I got any of the two I would install the Google Now Launcher as soon as I got it out of the box, but I would also consider replacing the manufacturer ROM with either the Google Play Edition ROM or Cyanogenmod. But then I'm afraid the HTC M8's camera would prove a liability without the specifically-made software around it.
So I would prefer a Galaxy S5 to be offered to me as a gift, but I would buy none of the two.
