The whole point about an SD card that people seem to always overlook, is that if your phone is ****ed, then all of the important and personal data stored on it is generally safe and can be transferred to another phone in 5 seconds.

One downside to SD card is if your phone and SD card is lost, then you have problems. Whereas with cloud you can restore the whole shebang.
If you keep regular local backups then you don't need an SD card or the cloud.

I agree 100%. Actually that's one of the reasons that kept me from buying the Nexus 5. And look at me now. Mind you, with the latest Android version you can't move apps onto the SD card, so it's nowhere near as useful as it used to be.
Never had an issue on my 16GB Nexus 4. I have about 100 apps no problem other than the occasion roadtrip that I had to have fewer music offline to accommodate country maps on Copilot.

I'm waiting for an Xperia Z3 and a Z2 Tablet now (Orange made me an offer I couldn't refuse by giving me the tablet for less than half price and for the first time I got a phone with a new contract) and having also an old 2012 N7, and I think the expandable storage is going to be a lot more useful in the tablet.

I have to go to Poland for work for 3 weeks - really boring town, and I'll just load a 32Gb card full of movies and series to get by in the evenings...

regular local backups can be a pain and if you are doing them, you can do it for the SD card and also have the cloud as a secondary backup.

clould backup is also managed by someone else, whereas a local backup gives you a whole load of new problems to deal with.

I cannot remember the last time I hooked up my phone to my PC... actually tell a lie, I did upgrade to iOS 8 using iTunes only because I didn't have 6GB of free storage on the handset. Point is that automatic and incremental cloud backups are the way to go. All my photos and videos are backed up to Onedrive (on my Lumia) or Google+ on my iPhone, and that's mostly all I care about if I were to lose my phone.

A local backup doesn't negate the benefits of an SD card, or the cloud. It's a fully manual process and fully dependent on access to your PC, thus more potential for data loss.

If you never lose or corrupt your data you don't need anything.

Thanks for the reassurance.

And now for something completely different...

Oneplus is giving 20,000 invitations to buy the One+ One telephone.

http://facebook.com/oneplusofficial

However they don't deliver in Switzerland so you'll need a shipping address in France/Germany/UK/etc.
Round 2 is active now. This time they're giving away 30,000 invites.

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

Is there a way to reset the poll to show current and near future offerings?

Are all 4G LTE phones created equal? I use tethering quite a bit and wondered if there is much difference in internet speed using this between phones.

Phone recommendations please:
Requirements:
Not Apple
Minimum 4.5in screen
4G LTE
Nice if it is dust/waterproof as i am rough on phones!!

Samsung S4 active is my leading choice at this stage but any other options recommended.

Thanks-

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

lots of guys at work have the S4's and love em

The S5 is waterproof

They do seem a bit hit and miss on battery life though and 4g drains the battery something chronic, but at least you can change the batteries on the galaxies

Not "waterproof" but does have an special coating that apparently does very well to protect the phone and has evensurvived 30 mins underwater. http://www.mobileburn.com/22487/news...not-waterproof

The Experia Z3 Compact is a great choice.
Also you may want to wait for the new Nexus to be released.

PS. Let's create a new poll but only once the new Nexus is out.
