New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

New season, new phones. Which one is your choice?

I hope I wonít get slammed for the list of phones. Unfortunately I cannot add an unlimited number of choices.

The one rule I imposed when I selected them was that every phone in the list has to connect to the new 4G networks. Many times in Lausanne do I see my phone connected to Orange 3G but unable to actually connect to the Internet. This is kind of expected given how many smartphones have been sold in the last months. Thus 4G connectivity is an absolute requirement when you spend that much for your new smartphone (so the Nexus 4 is out, sorry). I also went one step further and excluded from the list the HTC One XL (while I kept the Galaxy S3 4G) because it doesnít support all three basic 4G frequencies, meaning that once operators start using the 800 MHz frequency it wonít be able to take advantage of it.

The fact I included 3 devices from Samsung does not mean that I am a big Samsung fanboy (Iíve never owned any Samsung device), nor does it mean that I wanted to split the Samsung votes in order for somebody else to come on top. I just happen to believe that the (improved) Galaxy S3 deserves a place in this list having kicked a*s throughout 2012 and that the Note II is still the king of the big category.

So, a bit about the options.

Asus Padfone 2
With comparable performance to every other phone in this list, an almost pure Android interface and a good history of upgrades from Asus, the capability to insert it in the tablet accessory and have instant access to the same apps and files from the bigger screen and a great battery life (which is tripled if you use the tablet as a portable charger), the only reason to not consider it is because you want to get your phone from your mobile operator (none offers it unfortunately in Switzerland).

HTC One:
With its aluminum unibody, Beats Audio sound quality and a gorgeous screen, it certainly has its target audience that could prefer it over the Galaxy S4.

Motorola Razr HD
Like the Asus phone it is not offered by any Swiss operator so you have to pay full price for it, but its superior Kevlar body, its solid batter performance, the very limited customizations by Motorola on the interface, and the fact that it was the first phone fully designed by Google-owned Motorola are not to be overlooked.

Samsung Galaxy S4:
Building on the Galaxy S3ís strengths, packing a 5Ē screen without increasing the overall size, and expectedly offering the very best performance of every other Android phone for the first half of the year, the Galaxy S4 looks like the most standard option out there. But is improving last yearís model here and there enough for you?

Samsung Galaxy S3 4G version
What is it doing here? With 4G LTE connectivity, 2GB of RAM and upgradable at least to Android 5, I donít see any reason why not to pick this upgraded version of the 2012 Android best-seller.

Samsung Galaxy Note II 4G version
Too big for most people, just excellent for its fans. The extra capabilities of the S-Pen distinguish it from its competitors that are just very big phones. And it now comes with 4G connectivity.

Sony Xperia Z
Water- and dust-resistant but still looking good, there is certainly a good reason to forgive it for not coming on top in the benchmarks (it still beats every 2012 phone).

Other
Some possible options: Nexus 4, HTC One XL, HTC Butterfly, Huawei Ascend D2, LG Optimus G Pro, Optimus F7, Motorola Razr i, Sony Xperia ZL, Xperia SP, ZTE Grand S.

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

Some news:
It’s official: Samsung’s Galaxy S4 is the fastest-selling Android phone ever
HTC One is no flop: Shipments of HTC’s potential savior approach 5 million

So the Galaxy S4 is indeed selling extremely well, but the HTC One looks to be doing better than last year's HTC One X and One S.

The interesting detail is that some reviewers mention a bit of lag on the Galaxy S4.
Last year it was the HtC One X that was a bit laggy when it came out and got corrected later with a software update.

There is a new beast in the jungle, the LG G2 with a screen that now covers >75% (5.2') of the front without being any bigger than its closest competitor the Galaxy S4. This is one step closer to my ultimate smartphone, one where the entire front is a screen :msnnerd:. I also think the placement of the power and vol rocker on the back is pretty inspired and probably works better for these super-size smartphones.

I don't like that at all, I need a bezel because me being clumsy I often have padded cases or bumpers.

BTW: Love my Nexus 4, of course already on 4.3 :)

The Moto X not being released in Europe is ridiculous, and there doesn't seem to be a new Nexus on the way. The more of these phones are released, the more the Nexus 4 is looking like the best option.

Having read the review of the Moto X on Engadget I was left feeling pretty underwhelmed. The one thing Motorola used to be renowned for was brilliant build quality and cutting edge design (e.g. using Kevlar). The Moto X seems to be a knock off Galaxy, with inoffensive blandness a design feature. For me the best phone of the moment is the S4 and possibly the LG G2.

Yeah, the S4 Active looks even better actually. The LG G2 is tempting, but I'm gonna wait to see what CyanogenMod support is like for it. Hardware-wise it's a beast, but first impressions of the software suggest that it's absolutely dire.

I've had my S2 for two years now, should be ready to change in the autumn when all of this becomes clear.

I don't think we even know who will build it, because LG seem to be ruling themselves out.

Am I the only one who, at first glance, wondered if this thread was NSFW?

The Brick! Loved it. Dropped it 1,000 of times, broke 1,000 tiles/stones/floor boards!

When this world goes back to its creator or a nuclear bomb explodes, the Brick and the roach will be friends.

BTW. Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Avatar. Nice.;)

I just migrated to the Razr i and I love it- does all that new smartphoney stuff (I finally was torn away from my venerable Nokia e71) and has a massive battery within a normal smartphone sized body.

Very happy with it.

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

The G2 looks like an amazing phone.
It is actually stretching the term "beast" to new levels.
And LG definitely deserves better. They were actually declared No3 in global smartphone sales by IDC for a second quarter in a row.
I guess they finally found their way. I remember how frustrated I was during my first 15 months with the Optimus 2X. They never managed to release some proper software for it, and when they did I got my Xperia T and gave it to my brother.
But their hardware is usually top quality and according to recent reviews their software has also improved vastly.

Talking of my Xperia T.... I lost it 4 weeks ago. Forgot it in a Gondola after hiking. :(
Now, I am using an LG Optimus One (running Android 4.1 mind you :D ) and it kind of sucks.
But the fact I lost my Xperia is proof I must never spend more than 300-350 francs on a phone... I am just too untrustworthy.
So, I am browsing eBay all day trying to find a Motorla Razr HD for up to that amount. It just got official Cyanogenmod support so for me it is the BEST phone money can buy right now.
But I may settle for a Razr i as Occasional_Canadian. Or an Xperia SP.
We'll see.

Some things are classical.
The 3310 is one.
Ocarina of Time is another. :D

This to me now looks like multifunctional slim remote to control your car, garage and all appliances in the household never mind wife's mood... Cannot believe that in my varsity days I used Nokia to send romantic messages to girlfriends. Those were the days of my life...

My SGS3 was stolen on holiday :(

The annoying thing was that I planned on not taking it and on taking the reserve phone instead since I didn't plan to need it much. I wish I had.

That said, I had to decide what to buy as a replacement. The shortlist comprised: SGS3 (since I was happy with it), SGS4 (upgrade) or Nexus 4 (to try 'vanilla' android).

I went for the Nexus 4 just to give vanilla Android a try - even though I knew some elements would annoy me (softkeys, loss of SW which Samsung got right, poorer camera, crippled USB-OTG, no SDcard etc.). So far, I've managed to eliminate most of the software annoyances and am enjoying the phone.

All very nice phones... but for some reason i cannot get over the plasticky feel of the Samsung devices!! I think that HTC devices feel more uber... Currently on an HTC and damn near close to going home with an HTC One soon...
