New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

New season, new phones. Which one is your choice?

I hope I wont get slammed for the list of phones. Unfortunately I cannot add an unlimited number of choices.

The one rule I imposed when I selected them was that every phone in the list has to connect to the new 4G networks. Many times in Lausanne do I see my phone connected to Orange 3G but unable to actually connect to the Internet. This is kind of expected given how many smartphones have been sold in the last months. Thus 4G connectivity is an absolute requirement when you spend that much for your new smartphone (so the Nexus 4 is out, sorry). I also went one step further and excluded from the list the HTC One XL (while I kept the Galaxy S3 4G) because it doesnt support all three basic 4G frequencies, meaning that once operators start using the 800 MHz frequency it wont be able to take advantage of it.

The fact I included 3 devices from Samsung does not mean that I am a big Samsung fanboy (Ive never owned any Samsung device), nor does it mean that I wanted to split the Samsung votes in order for somebody else to come on top. I just happen to believe that the (improved) Galaxy S3 deserves a place in this list having kicked a*s throughout 2012 and that the Note II is still the king of the big category.

So, a bit about the options.

Asus Padfone 2
With comparable performance to every other phone in this list, an almost pure Android interface and a good history of upgrades from Asus, the capability to insert it in the tablet accessory and have instant access to the same apps and files from the bigger screen and a great battery life (which is tripled if you use the tablet as a portable charger), the only reason to not consider it is because you want to get your phone from your mobile operator (none offers it unfortunately in Switzerland).

HTC One:
With its aluminum unibody, Beats Audio sound quality and a gorgeous screen, it certainly has its target audience that could prefer it over the Galaxy S4.

Motorola Razr HD
Like the Asus phone it is not offered by any Swiss operator so you have to pay full price for it, but its superior Kevlar body, its solid batter performance, the very limited customizations by Motorola on the interface, and the fact that it was the first phone fully designed by Google-owned Motorola are not to be overlooked.

Samsung Galaxy S4:
Building on the Galaxy S3s strengths, packing a 5 screen without increasing the overall size, and expectedly offering the very best performance of every other Android phone for the first half of the year, the Galaxy S4 looks like the most standard option out there. But is improving last years model here and there enough for you?

Samsung Galaxy S3 4G version
What is it doing here? With 4G LTE connectivity, 2GB of RAM and upgradable at least to Android 5, I dont see any reason why not to pick this upgraded version of the 2012 Android best-seller.

Samsung Galaxy Note II 4G version
Too big for most people, just excellent for its fans. The extra capabilities of the S-Pen distinguish it from its competitors that are just very big phones. And it now comes with 4G connectivity.

Sony Xperia Z
Water- and dust-resistant but still looking good, there is certainly a good reason to forgive it for not coming on top in the benchmarks (it still beats every 2012 phone).

Other
Some possible options: Nexus 4, HTC One XL, HTC Butterfly, Huawei Ascend D2, LG Optimus G Pro, Optimus F7, Motorola Razr i, Sony Xperia ZL, Xperia SP, ZTE Grand S.

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

Some news:
It’s official: Samsung’s Galaxy S4 is the fastest-selling Android phone ever
HTC One is no flop: Shipments of HTC’s potential savior approach 5 million

So the Galaxy S4 is indeed selling extremely well, but the HTC One looks to be doing better than last year's HTC One X and One S.

The interesting detail is that some reviewers mention a bit of lag on the Galaxy S4.
Last year it was the HtC One X that was a bit laggy when it came out and got corrected later with a software update.

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

There is a new beast in the jungle, the LG G2 with a screen that now covers >75% (5.2') of the front without being any bigger than its closest competitor the Galaxy S4. This is one step closer to my ultimate smartphone, one where the entire front is a screen . I also think the placement of the power and vol rocker on the back is pretty inspired and probably works better for these super-size smartphones.

I don't like that at all, I need a bezel because me being clumsy I often have padded cases or bumpers.

BTW: Love my Nexus 4, of course already on 4.3

The Moto X not being released in Europe is ridiculous, and there doesn't seem to be a new Nexus on the way. The more of these phones are released, the more the Nexus 4 is looking like the best option.

Having read the review of the Moto X on Engadget I was left feeling pretty underwhelmed. The one thing Motorola used to be renowned for was brilliant build quality and cutting edge design (e.g. using Kevlar). The Moto X seems to be a knock off Galaxy, with inoffensive blandness a design feature. For me the best phone of the moment is the S4 and possibly the LG G2.

I like this a lot, read a few reviews, but I've been a bit busy and I've not really been reading reviews on this phone, but seems like a promising phone and was a nice phone after the Moto X disappointment. To be honest this phone is a bit big for my liking, I want something like 4.7".

I really like the specifications in this phone, and really like the processor, which is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.26 GHz. Obviously this still isn't close to even a dual core processor in a desktop but still, look at the progress in the last 15 years. (Moore's law does stand true, and that's amazing if you ask me). I've read articles recently that we're facing a 'wall' because of the heat issues and speed demand. Still the processor is crazy...

Anyone know when the HTC one mini will be out in Switzerland?
I need to get a new phone, and thinking of this one. I had a look at the full size one, and also the Galaxy S4, and they were both a bit too large for my liking.

What, no love for Sony i1/Honami? IMHO, the lightest customization of Androrid + excellent ergonomics. I just hope they include a proper IPS or tri-luminous display, as the current (Xperia Z) is lousy at best.

Nexus 5 is a unicorn - I have long given up hope on its arrival to our lands.

I mean, we do not need such a success again is what he said, but which company wouldn't? Especially in LG's position, one of the smaller players in the smartphone industry.
Why would they want to cannibalise their own 'branded' sales with another Nexus phone? They've already proven themselves with the Nexus 4 (apart from initial supply chain hiccups), now its time to fortify their brand. Its one of the main reasons that HTC moved away from being an unknown OEM manufacturer to being what it is today (however they still describe themselves as 'Quietly Brilliant', a throwback to their past)

There are only two stand out points to the Moto X. One is the fact that you can custom build your phone.. which is err nice

And the other is that its 'Proudly made in the USA', which to be honest is not high on my priority list.

A reviewer from The Verge described it as the best screen he has ever seen on a smartphone. Similarly most of the other reviews I have read have not been able to fault the screen. The biggest complaints about the G2 are button placement and UI (in case you need help in your criticism )

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

Did you see you can bring the Kitkat launcher (a.k.a. Google Experience Launcher or GEL) on any device running Android 4.1 or higher?

You only need to wait until Google Now (Google Search) gets updated to the latest version.
Then you need to install this apk: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291676903 (com.google.android.launcher-0.9.6.886092.apk).

More info here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/11...-apk-download/

I already did it in my Zopo which is running Android 4.2.1 and now it looks like a Nexus 5 (without the transarency).

Re: New Android beasts in town: which one for you?

Well, if I had to choose, I'd go for the HTC One.

It's got a Snapdragon 600 clocked at 1.6 GHz, and anyways generally good specifications. I like the speakers and the display is extremely good. (not going into specs or too much detail here)
The problem is that I like stock android and the Google Edition phones are not available here, well no devices at all (not even Nexus). Therefore, I have to factor in TouchWiz and the new Sense. Sense is significantly less modified than TouchWiz, and I like Sense better, so I will go with Sense. Of course, I can get stock on it by rooting and using launchers etc, but still.

I currently have a Nexus 4 that I got from the UK, and a Nexus 7 bought from Digitec. And they're already on 4.3!

I think anybody who wants a premium phone, stock android experience and so on should go for Nexus devices. They're not expensive either. Nexus 4 is CHF 395, and Nexus 7 (2012) is CHF 275. The Nexus 7 (2013) is CHF 300. I think that if you plan to get the Nexus 4, you should wait for the Nexus 5 as it should come in a few months from now. It's a great time to get the 2013 Nexus 7 now, and if you really want a budget tablet, the 2012 Nexus 7 (which is not slow and laggy anymore, especially after the 4.3 TRIM fix).

The Moto X - two problems - low specs (dual core processor for the price, really?) for the price, and it's not being released in Europe. I find this decision rather odd considering the Moto X was considered a pretty big deal. Digitec may import it, though.

The LG G2 seems pretty nice, but it's not in this poll. Besides, I've not done hours of research into it, because I don't particularly like the design. Nevertheless, looks like a pretty good phone but I like stock android.

Whats the torsional rigidity like (i.e does it creak when twisted)? Once you exceed 4" that is always an issue and it irritates the hell out if me.

Interestingly the Galaxy Nexus won't be getting the KitKat update. This is due to Texas Instruments no longer making SOCs for devices.

The Galaxy Nexus was a bit of a stinker anyway
