Any opinions on soundbars?

I have a Philips HTS8100 that I really like, connected to a 50" Samsung PS50B650S TV (with crap internal speakers). The Philips soundbar may have kicked the bucket, so considering something new.

Budget is pretty low (about 400CHF). Space is not really an issue, but we did like the soundbar, as it kept things pretty clean. 4HDMI ports on the TV and Optical/SCART/RGB, so no shortage of connections.

We use it as our home media center with AppleTV, AppleTV2 (jailbroken), VOIP TV Streaming box; so lots of music and TV?movies.

Wondering what others are using at this price point, but always happy to consider going higher.

Thanks,

Re: Any opinions on soundbars?

Soundbars are better than internal TV speaker, but not as good as a dedicated 5.1 system. They try and "replicate" surround sound by directionally bouncing the sound off of walls, but of course that will never compete with true surround.

In short: yes, they are good, and provide decent sound without all the hassle of wiring up your living room. However, a good 5.1 (and even good 2.1 speaker system) will be better in terms of sound quality.

Just ask yourself what your needs are and how much you care about the audio experience when watching movies etc.

true, that's why you need to choose Sonos, which can (should the necessary funds suddenly appear) easily be extended to a 5.1 system that sounds very good.

http://www.radiotvhagmann.ch/products-10233-0/PLAYBAR

can be extended by adding additional wireless speakers.

The sound quality is pretty awesome - but it isn't cheap. It's more than a normal soundbar, of course, as it also plays your entire music library, integrates to services such as Spotify, plays internet radio etc. etc.

here are some reviews:

Re: Any opinions on soundbars?

This would be interesting... it's not that the funds don't exist, but that the other banker in the family may not agree to allocate...

But if it were in stages, sh... the other banker, I mean, might be easier to convince.

But still interested to know if Sonos has any good competitors out there. I understand that Sonos is the Gold Standard for wireless, but what a premium they are still charging! As a Mac user, I guess I should understand this...

well, I looked at the heading and was going to hammer out: go Sonos - but then I read the 400 Fr. spending limit and didn't post (until now :-)

Ahh, 400chf limit? I missed that. Then for that low budget I would certainly use the EF marketplace and buy an AV receiver and a set of used speakers. He will get much more value and sound quality for your money than buying a crappy quality 400chf soundbar.

Re: Any opinions on soundbars?

Any credible Sonos competitors out there at a (much) lower price point?

At the moment, just looking to set up the TV room with a subwoofer and speakers for TV/movies/music. I did buy the HTS8100 on Ricardo for a good price, so not averse to going 2nd hand.

Really just looking to see what people are using these days, as I have not bought hifi equipment for a LONG time and with all of our home entertainment systems on Mac, and with the availability of wireless, I am pretty clueless about my options.

Back in the US, stored in a container for 7+ yrs, lies my "original" McIntosh kit... it even uses tubes. LOVE the sound of it warming up!

similar here, I was going to mention that I plan on testing a YSP-4100 over the weekend but then I saw the 400 Francs budget and decided not to bother.

Re: Any opinions on soundbars?

I want to get a Sound Bar with similar spec to this one:

Samsung HW-H450

I may even get one of those but I don't really want one so long (this one is 93cm long) as it's for use with a monitor for occasional use watching DVDs etc).

But, I want my Bose unit back in the kitchen for listening to the radio so want something separate to use for films etc.

I like the idea of a separate, wireless sub-woofer and so don't really want a sound box and the cheaper ones of these don't have HDMI out which I want too.
I also want Bluetooth as well.

And I don't want to spend too much. The Samsung HW-H450 is only 164 CHF.

My Media player is a Raspberry Pi.

So, any ideas? Thanks.

If anyone is interested, we got a Sony HT-XT1 sound box in the end.

It seemed a good compromise between cost and quality.

Anyway, it had HDMI in and OUT so works well with the Raspberry Pi although that was currently powered by the monitor (no TV) we were using and this sometimes goes into standby when you turn it on if the HDMI signal is not there at the right time so I'm running the Pi off a 5V PSU rather than the monitor USB port. which has sorted that out.

Anyway, the sound is far superior than the Bose fed through analogue, especially base for films and speech quality is so, so much better.
It's got loads of features such as NFC for the bluetooth which was easy to set up with Android and Apple devices.

Anyway, very happy with the set up. It's not in your face like some systems but is loud enough for our needs.

Surely the quality of the sound output is more important than the looks?

Re: Any opinions on soundbars?

Just a heads up... there is a soundbar on the market called the Sony HT-RT5 which is a true 5.1 solution with wireless rears that can also be taken to other rooms and used as multi-room speakers.http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/sound-bars/ht-rt5

Reviews are pretty much all decent for example http://geekculture.co/geek-review-sony-ht-rt5-soundbar/ and http://soundbarreviews.net/sony-ht-rt5-review/

Amazon reviews http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Soundba.../dp/B013H1WQKK

User feedback: https://www.avforums.com/threads/son...-have.1976283/

The only real negative things I have seen are that volume can be finicky and to get it at full blast you have to fiddle with the settings sometimes. However for most people in an apartment that shouldn't be an issue.

Seems like a decent solution for those wanting less clutter and acceptable sound quality.

How are the rear speakers powered; by battery or mains?

Edit: found it, mains, obviously .

Bumping an old thread due to all the new soundbars since. Thinking of the new LG SK10Y, wondering if anyone has some recent experiences with soundbars they'd care to share?
