| | BBC1 HD on Cablecom has annoying dialogue
This is sending me nuts, it's a spoken description of whats happening in the scene that would assist a blind person, a bit like subtitles for the deaf. It's only on BBC1 HD, and only certain programmes i.e. not on the British GP, Wimbledon or the news, but on Q.o.S and Eastenders (I know MaGoose likes it). I've checked all the Cablecom settings and can't find anything, and I'm still on my old setup not Horizon, sound is played via surround sounds system and there is nothing in there that could be the culprit. So it has to come from Cablecom, anyone else have this, and if so how can I switch it off.

Press 'i' on the control and change the Audio from NAR to Anglais.

"Papa Goose looks over at the television with disgust, and throws the remote control at the Cablecom box. It rebounds with a satisfying thwack."
Nobody is reporting the same problem at the Cablecom forum: http://community.upc-cablecom.ch/hiv...a1899b/summary
Have you tried a "factory settings" restore of your box?

The Narration audio track is a special feature of the BBC that allows you to watch TV with your eyes closed....

Get a Digicard - NAR is only a default setting on the media box.

How porsch1909 describes how to change it is how I do it. However, when I turn it to "Dolby Digital Sound" the sound is muffled for a minute or two which is pretty annoying. I think it may be something to do with my tv as I haven't heard anybody else complaining about this

I've had, and have been infuriated by, this same problem for a few weeks now. As long as it only affected BBC 1 HD (channel 201), I could "escape" to the standard definition BBC 1 channel 200 - not really why I'm paying a monthly sub for digital HD, though - but now the same malaise has also "infected" BBC 2 HD on channel 202, for which there's no SD alternative. Cablecom don't seem to know anything about it, and seem to think I'm complaining about written subtitles. Two weeks of intensive e-mail traffic haven't yet managed to produce a response from anyone there who understands the difference between Subtitles and Audio Description. So most grateful for Adrian's fix - have now set both my boxes in accordance with his tip for both BBC1 HD and BBC2 HD and am now waiting with bated breath to see if it works on the next Audio Described programme. For the uninitiated, by the way, not all BBC programmes carry audio description - only those that have the letters [AD] printed after them in the Radio Times of other programme listings.

Dunno what Cablecom box you have, but on mine I need to press "i" and change away from NAR each time I switch channels. Interesting that you called Cablecom. If your dialogue is still open, don't try and describe NAR or "narrative audio" but just say that you've set the box to default to English, and each time it picks what is, in effect, another language.
The problem isn't NAR, but the fact that the station transmits English Dolby Digital, not English.
I have the same problem if watching a film on a Swiss HD channel which has, say, three streams. (1) German, (2) German Dolby Digital and (3) English Dolby Digital. My box will pick German as there is no "English" for it to default to.
Someone on another thread tried to tell me that it's the TV station's fault but it's not. It's the box. It doesn't understand that my default language of "English" is the same as "English Dolby Digital".

I politely declined, suggesting instead that they should re-read my recent, detailed e-mail exchanges with their Technical Support department, including one helpful gent who had managed to confirm and reproduce the problem on his own equipment - but who was nevertheless, apparently, unaware of the simple fix you've kindly shared with your fellow-sufferers. Not sure if I'll now bother pursuing it further with Cablecom - it's still irritating to have the box (mine's the UPC Mediabox HD, by the way) defaulting back to NAR, whatever that stands for, every time I switch it off or even change channels, and I'm sure there must be a software fix they could implement if I could get them to understand the problem in the first place, but right now I don't think my nerves are up to it ;-) Thanks for your info and feedback, though - much appreciated.

I previously posted that the effect you see on your decoder is due to the order of the audio tracks as broadcast by the BBC, and the way the decoder handles the multiple audio soundtracks.
It is something which could only be fixed by a software fix on the decoder
Note: the newer decoders do not have this problem, they do not default to the NAR soundtrack
