Re: Best mobile internet for laptop???

Hello
personnally, I use since many years the swisscom called "unlimited" service for mobile data transfers

http://www.swisscom-mobile.ch/scm/ge...imited-en.aspx

and I'm well satisfyed about, as the signal cover is the best from all providers, and I can work really from everywhere

I hope I get you the help you needed

Re: Best mobile internet for laptop???

I also believe that the Mobile Unlimited offers the best option - 5Gb traffic for 79 per month IIRC. Or for 39 per month as a student.

Orange I think comes second and Sunrise third. Sunrise seemed to be relatively expensive when I looked.

The advantage of the Swisscom solution is that you can roam onto their WLANs as well as UMTS, etc.

For the US - I have no idea - try a US-based forum like www.dslreports.com?

Orange also provide a roaming service for UMTS & WLAN, their international offering is much cheaper on both.

For the US, try www.devicescape.com or www.boingo.com for pure Public WLAN, they also have very good international offerings as well.

As long as you don't need Blackberry BIS I think Swisscom Mobile is the best solution (best price, best coverage). However, if you're intending to add a Blackberry to your range of mobile devices, go for Orange - Orange allows you to combine their (pseudo-) flat-rate tariff with the BIS option.
Orange also has close to perfect coverage and offers HSDPA in more densely populated areas.

Swisscom Mobile, on the other hand, doesn't offer any flat rate for their Blackberry Service. You get 5mb of data volume for 20 fr. a month - go figure...

Re: Best mobile internet for laptop???

I just re-read the Orange blurb and their "flat-rate" is for 2.5Gb of traffic.

Errrrr rather not flat.

I'm lucky enough that I have flat-rate on my Blackberry. Swiss calls and data over GPRS is free - I'm just wondering if I can pop the SIM into a 3G card and abuse this with my laptop...

Re: Best mobile internet for laptop???

No it does not. At least not with my Swisscom Mobile Sim and my "unlimited" HSDPA card... seems the Sim you throw in the card needs to be provisioned for "unlimited". But give it a try... could work on other card/operator combinations...

About the data prices: They are marketed depending of the service... I cannot access Orange.ch (because I work for Swisscom, sit in my office right now and everyone coming from our corporate IPs gets blocked...), so I cannot compare the prices. However, if we talk about Blackberry, 2,5 Gigs are defenitely a flat. Blackberry compresses emails a lot, so it is actually pretty hard to make more than 5 MB traffic a month. I personally use Microsoft push email (because it is cheaper), set it up to not forward the attachments to my phone by default and end up between 15 and 25 MB a month. That cost 10 CHF at Swisscom and I believe 7.50 at Sunrise (no idea about orange).

But the discussion was around datacards & laptops, right? Since you need a second SIM for this anyway, there is plenty of choice: Chose the provider that fits you best with the Notebook offer (I do not want to promote my employer... ) and maybe a different one for your blackberry if they have better prices.

If you plan to buy a new notebook, you can actually buy them with an integrated SIM, so you do not need to run around with an blue/red card sticking out of your designer Macbook... My Dell is so ugly that it really does not matter

yeah, that's why I wrote (pseudo-) flat - they call it a flat-rate but it isn't one.
However, I'd say it's pretty hard to ever reach those 2.5gb unless you download your iTunes movie rentals over the air :-)

Ah, needs to be provisioned - that's good information. Are they likely to do this for me? This is based on using a SIM associated with my BB account.

Swisscom. It's a company thing - not consumer. So ask your company if they have something like this in place.

I have a flat rate on Orange which is free to Swiss land lines and orange mobiles. Disappointingly, and bizarrely, it's not compatibly with their data-flat tariff so I'm stuck with 2MB a month or something.

I work for a university :-) Have to pay for my own blackberry. I do have a business cell but since we're mainly open-source based, we shun fancy things like Exchange Servers or Lotus Domino ...

Re: Best mobile internet for laptop???

Sorry but i'm not as techincal as you all are and my question may sound stupid.

I just moved to a new apartment without a phone line and internet service. I desperately need to access the internet (simple surfing, emailing downloading music, movies, skype with family) but the bank has refused to pay for the 600 sfr start up fee for a new phone/internet connection.

This PC card you are mentioning (i went to the swisscome site), once installed, does it allow me to connect my computer to the internet wirelessly anywhere in switzerland? If so, which card is better (http://www.swisscom-mobile.ch/scm/ge...ards-en.aspx)? I have a HP laptop with windows vista.

Thank you soo much!

I kid you not, I emailed Orange telling them it was bonkers, I would have thought their Maxima (flat rate price plan) customers would have been the ones most interested in data flat.

I'm a bit confused? Why 600chf? What were you trying to get? Why would the bank have paid it?

undoutedly this is including a deposit based on Swisscom's dislike of the permit the person has. I'm assuming the bank refused a loan.

You might find that Swisscom Mobile also want a deposit from certain people for mobile services too

For internet, try Cablecom - I don't know whether they demand a deposit but it might be an option.

Yes, that is the idea.

To say it "not-technically": The two cards only difference is that they are a different "size", so simple use the one that fits the slot on your machine... Tip: bring the laptop to the Swisscom shop and try if it fits on the spot... the sales guys are not neccessarily more technical than you are...
