Re: lyca mobile?

the one thing to be careful about when roaming in the usa is that
your phone selects the right carrier. I believe the roaming partner in the usa for lyca is t-mobile usa. If your on other carriers i might charge you roaming rates or just not work. So if your in USA and can't get a signal don't worry its just poor T-mobile coverage not your sim card. I used their sim card last year lycamobile.us in usa it was ok service for the price. Your swiss lyca well PLEASE let us know the results of your roaming. I am sure all of us are curious to know the results.

Thanks

Re: lyca mobile?

togglemobile.co.uk has been offering free roaming in EU+CH+US+Australia (and some others) for quite some time now.

You can use up to nine numbers simultaneously (for example Swiss and US), incoming is free, outgoing 3p/minute.

In the US they (also) use the T-Mobile network.

Iīve been using them for ~2 years now, and it works just fine :)

Oh - I think Togglemobile is a Lycamobile brand.

Re: lyca mobile?

I have used toggle mobile whilst in usa, and again their roaming partner is t-mobile USA so getting a good signal was always an issue outside of the huge
west coast cities.. Anyway the only issue I have with toggle mobile is their stupid topup system that hates foreign credit cards. In the end I just spent the money on the card and gave up..

if you can overcome the stupid top up issues (the single point of failure for me) if you don't have a uk credit card then your good to go. their customer service was more then useless when asked why their system kept refusing any of my no uk credit cards... good luck..

How did you topup? What what kind of credit card (country??)

Customer Service: I agree, practically non-existant.
Top-up: I use a UK credit card, but I know of top-ups using German and Swiss cards.

If T-Mobile-coverage is a problem in the US, Iīd do the following:
  1. Get a netvoip.ch -account in Switzerland (free, at least no subscription)
  2. Get a local US-SIM to your liking
  3. Divert your Swiss mobile to your Swiss netvoip#
  4. Divert the netvoip# to the new US-number at minimal fees per minute

I will report on how the coverage was....If I allow roaming on my iphone and I am not within tmobile coverage, I wonder if I will be moved to ATT/Verizon and be charged roaming fees? I will look into that.

Togglemobile is very intersting, especially the 9 numbers. Their data seems to be a little expensive though. Do they give a bonus when you top up?

No bonus and I agree I find their data-rates expensive.

Within EU+CH thereīs a German SIM >>base<<, in other countries itīs still better to get local cards and do the >>netvoip<< divert.

OK - the netvoip-thing sounds cloudy/complicated, so here's an example:
  • Going to Russia for a few days soon.
  • Local Russian SIM card is ~CHF 10 incl. one GB, so thatīs data covered.
  • Netvoip diverts a Swiss fixed line# to >>Russia mobile<< for 10 Rappen/minute
  • AldiMobile divert to Swiss-fixed lines by deducting from 1000 monthly minutes, i.e. it doesnīt cost anything extra.
Result: If someone calls my Swiss number(fixed or mobile) I receive the call in Russia, costing 10rp/minute. Data is covered.

Does anyone know where the details of this paid add-on are?

Does this mean that if I take my Lycamobile CH SIM to Italy, and roam on Hutchison 3 (which is the Lycamobile IT host network), then I can buy and use one of the data-packages advertised on Lycamobile IT?

Not exactly. Seems you buy the data package in CH.

For example, to have 1GB data roaming in Italy, you would text 7104 to 3535. It'd cost you 15CHF.

For some reason data roaming in France and Portugal is much more expensive than in other countries.

Is yours broken?

Most of yesterday and now today again my phone is searching for network every few minutes.. When it finds it it gets 3g, not LTE then no signal again a few minutes.

Didn't notice much because i was on wi-fi most of the day but still crap.

Yep, same thing here. Weirdly enough it works indoors (like in my apartment) but not outside. A colleague called them yesterday and they had no idea - they were going through the usual routine, i.e. "try it in another phone", etc.

I have the same problem. Yesterday when I turned off the phone and restarted it fixed the problem....today it doesnt. I had also noticed that the voice quality was of really bad quality in the days (week?) before this outage. Some calls would not go out, some calls would connect but without ringing.

I made a commitment to try it out for three months, but outside of the prices it hasnt been very worth it. I might try lebara next

Re: lyca mobile?

Sounds like you were in a highly congested area at the time, and that the carrier SWISSCOM was force your mobile over to
Half Rate Codec (bad voice quality). The band switching was overcrowded local mast + lack of backup in the area.

I normally had zero problems with signal or calls on LYCA.
However.... in the last 2 weeks there have been a few times
where singnals were vanishing or ping ponging 2g/3g/lte. that
is entirely a SWISSCOM issue with masts being down or
a weak signal. Anyway lyca cant do nothing about it. Just wait
for SWISSCOM to get of their bums and fix it..

I do like lycamobile. But their exclusions, their shoddy customer service,
and finally cant use the topus bonus for anything but calls and texts, which I never use, I use voip for calls, and their every changing terms and conditions are just downright frurstrating. The latest is their eu roaming, data
costs are varied depending on which country. While im happy to have it
its just annoying to have to read read read, decide which is best.

Lycamobile can be my backup for when I travel, or for 10gb data usage.

My main issue is that I have a micro-sim lycamobile, when I asked for a repalcement to a nano-sim iphone and most of the new mobile they said no.
SO I got the micro and had to chop it down myself. worse they cut me old
sim off and I had to wait 14 days to receive via mail and active (8 calls) the new sim.

If I goto swisscom/sunrise/orange they change for free mostly and you get the sim in the store. ADVANTAGE..

whew..... i need a coffee....

Re: lyca mobile?

I thought it might have been a Swisscom issue but after it wasnt fixed within a day I started to suspect Lyca. If swisscom cant get something like this under control, then I wonder how they are so popular/expensive?

ftg888 01.04.2015 09:35

Re: lyca mobile?

most likely your right..

lycamobile is an MVNO so they have lower priority on the network
then a SWISSCOM CONTRACT customer. if the sc cont custs fill
up the network then the swis payg get pushed down, followed by
MVNO's so lycamobile is at the bottom of the pile for dropping calls
and congestion. ah well

for daily life im moving to another carrier, whilst keeping a lycamobile
sim for ld calls and roaming :)

John_H 01.04.2015 10:36

Re: lyca mobile?

Seems to be fixed..

Whatever it was it wasn't a local congestion issue. I had problems in the office in Geneva and at home 30k away.. And you guys have issues far away..

This is first issue I've had with Lyca, and for the price I can live with it. I make about 5 calls per month, everything else is data and nobody comes close to the proce of 10gb of data.

Re: lyca mobile?

I am starting to hate lyca. They put good prices for things and a small text that says that it's until february, and not anymore valid; other trick is that you have to activate the special price with a code, always very small in grey or puth a link and get the information in other page................

So look out! don't think that those offers are by default.

Re: lyca mobile?

so im trying to port out from lyca to another provider. i get a port date
of april 3 from new provider. then new provider sends me post umm.
sorry to tell you your old provider wont let u leave until the 7th. i know its only 4 days but sheesh.. also some idiots at lyca mobile called me like 8 times in 3 days trying to get me to stay. i just tell them where i moved to NO SIGNAL..
shuts them up fast. helps ha... if had it up to hear with lyca. as a backup fine.. as first line nope..bye

**one last bitch about lycamobile
1) cant use tethering on data
2) CANT SET CALL FORWARDING ahhhh.... so even i want to leave early and call forward. nope that feature is dead.

FU lyca.

kiwiguy08 08.04.2015 16:08

Re: lyca mobile?

anyone know how the whole "can only buy bundles from non bonus top up" work? My Lyca only shows me the total amount of credit I have. (topup+bonus) Any way to see how much of that I have available to buy a bundle?

ftg888 09.04.2015 22:59

Re: lyca mobile?

whats displayed is

a) your real balance + b) your inclusive bonus = total balance displayed

You need to actually call customer service to find out how much REAL
money you have on your account. This drove me nuts. SO I left.

LYCA is trying hard, which I like, but they are making a complete mess
of the rates and using them well is not well documented.

BEST LUCK...

John_H 09.04.2015 23:08

Re: lyca mobile?

Said it before but for me, almost no calls or SMS and 10gb per month data user, nothing comes close to Lyca for price and coverage. The bonus money doesn't even matter, it's still cheap.

If you just want the cheapest most reliable heavy big data plan in the country, use Lyca.

If you have more complex requirements like tethering, roaming, data roaming, calling abroad, using customer service. Look elsewhere and pay the premium.
