Azone.ch - Quick Review

Since I setup the "proper" hi-fi I have been looking for a solution to the "source". I am a confirmed iPod user - and was looking for a cheap way of improving the sound quality over the existing Pure i10 - which quite frankly is a waste of time/money.

While in the UK I identified the Arcam drDock as "the right" tool for the job. It take a digital signal from the iPod - processes through it's own DAC. It cost £180 in Richer Sounds - but a quick search on TopPreise had Azone selling it at 280chf. For 10chf I was happy to pay the Swiss price.

Ordered it - and apart from a sourcing delay, I was able to pick it up a week later.

Azone kept me informed with a half a dozen emails - on order, on confirmation, on delay, on expected arrival and finally on arrival.

The guy was pleasant enough on collection.

I managed to hook it up this afternoon and the results are seriously impressive. The whole sound has gained an incredible level of control. Vocals are clear. Bass is robust and tight. It has really transformed the source side of the system. It might not boast top level DAC performance but for the money it is a great addition.

I tend to avoid like the plague a lot of the online suppliers on TopPreise - but took a punt on the (local) Azone - and will use them again.

Re: Azone.ch - Quick Review

Good for you. I had exactly the opposite experience with Azone - had to wait more than a month for headphones that were supposed to be delievered in a couple of days (5, I think). Each time I contacted them I was told that they would be sent shortly and after about a month one of their employees yelled at me over the phone because I dared to ask how sure he was that this time they would finally ship something. Never again.

Re: Azone.ch - Quick Review

Using an ipod as a source, even through a standalone DAC, is never going to be the way to hifi nirvana. But it depends on the overall quality you are looking for.

If you have seriously good speakers and other components, look elsewhere for your source.

Otherwise, enjoy.

I bought a projector from Azone years ago that was faulty. They replaced it after a couple of grumbles, but was all ok. I would buy from them but digitec is close to where I work and I prefer to pick up.

It is a mid-term solution until I have the time to re-rip all the music to a loss-less format - and then set up a network storage etc etc.

The time to do that is quite a lot - and I simply don't have the time/motivation to do that at the moment. More important things to do!!

HOWEVER I do enjoy good reproduction of music - and so the drDock does a good job. Band of Horses' "Funeral" was so much clearer - vocals haunting in their reproduction. Meanwhile Bob Dylan's "Workingman Blues" had far greater depth - and a more complete sound. A reference track of Avril Lavigne's "Skater Boi" revealed a bass that was tight and punchy - in particular the low rumble found on the beat, which can too easily become just a low undefined blur.

I will road test Sham69 on it tonight.

Re: Azone.ch - Quick Review

+1 to Azone.

And on the Ipod / Itunes vs. loss less format. Yeah, yeah loss less is probably better. But for everyday listening, I would argue that most wouldn't be able to tell the difference btw Ipod as a source with a decent DAC and loss less with the same DAC.

I am going down the route of using Itunes via Sonos connect as a source. If I want to improve it further my new NAD amp can get a DAC added as a build in.

I think sometimes HI-Fi ists get lost in the tech and forget to enjoy the music.

Re: Azone.ch - Quick Review

Hi Guys

According to Azone - does anybody know what happened to those guys? Maybe it's because of New Year's eve or passed x-mas days, but actually I do not receive any answers when I try to call them via phone or email.

Generally I must say that their services were much better some years ago ...

Yours

Re: Azone.ch - Quick Review

They are a small Swiss company - I'd bet on them taking the extended holiday that is happening this year - so back in on the 6th.

They are simply a reseller.

Re: Azone.ch - Quick Review

I've been looking at this store today for their Monitor speaker collection... I'm looking for the Monitor Bronze 5 and Monitor Bronze 2 range.

Are Azone worth considering or did es anyone know any other good online stores that sell Monitor speakers?

Re: Azone.ch - Quick Review

Fischer hifi is an online and brick & mortar store selling monitor audios.

The hifi store near central in Zurich also sells them. Can't remember the name, it's next to the comi Halle restaurant. Almost no price difference online when I looked a few years ago.

I only had good experience with azone but have not used them for a couple of years.

Re: Azone.ch - Quick Review

Our 26 year old Celestion 3 speakers died at Christmas so Mr CB persuaded me that we needed PMC twenty 26's as replacements!

My point is that we went to Hi Fi Zurmühle in Lucerne. Not only were they very helpful but open to a bit of negotiation. Not sure if they stock Monitors but might be worth checking.

Fair enough, but I'd much rather buy locally to Zurich given the choice.

Re: Azone.ch - Quick Review

The shop in central I mentioned earlier :
http://best-hifi.ch/pages/de/startseite.php

Very friendly service, loaned a system to my friend while he waited a couple of months for his audio analog system order.

Hifi zurmühle in Lucerne is also really great, I got my PMCs there...

Any recent experiences on Azone? I'm thinking of a TV purchase from there as their price is much less than competitors

I bought a Samsung TV UE32N5370 from AZONE.ch. When it arrived I noticed the box had been opened between leaving the factory and delivery to me. Parts were missing. You can't trust people like this.

That’s usually for them to put in a cable with a Swiss plug on it.
