I have a list of things that we need for the house. I can strike guest beds off, lights (some) but still have new sofas, garden furniture (if summer ever comes), curtains, a "special" light plus lots of other things.

We actually don't have kids but do have two dangerous dogs. I mean - they eat children not chicken (have I got that the right way around!?)

I actually don't use the xbox that much to game....xbmc is the main reason I got it (and chipped)....

Re: Hd Tv

Well as this was all about HDTV I thought this little gem might be interesting:

I have it from a good source that the 94cm LCD HD panels are about to go the same route as the 82cm that means under CHF 1500. The price today is circa 2200 to 2500 so this is a big drop. Interestingly I was in MM the other day and noticed that there was a lot(10?) of 82cm at 1449 and 1499. Looking at toppreise there is none/one under 1500. Is toppreise a bit out of date?

Re: Hd Tv

It's not likely that toppreise is out of date. It works more like this:

Media markt is often more expensive than all the small shops on toppreise. However, for SOME items media markt is often the same price or slightly better. These often tend to be (in my experience) bigger items like TV, big printers and laptops.

I think in the case of flatscreen TVs media markt probably finds a parallel import channel (i.e. imports a boat load of them themselves) allowing them to offer a lower price than even the internet shops.

The other thing is that if you get someone into a store that is big enough they will probably buy other stuff while they are there and you improve your margin.

So what better thing to lure the proletariat than a flat screen TV?

thanks lob rockster.

in fact i already have the cablecom recorder but maybe didnt make that clear. it is actually 35 francs per month for the basic package.

it does not have a hdmi output.

i would feel remiss if i didnt point out that S-video is really an inferior connection .... if your amp supports component you should use that. otherwise, i would bypass the amp and use a dvd player with component or hdmi... eg samsung hd950, and then use a digital out to connect to your amp.
I've got a friend who's got that cable package, but not the digital recorder. Does it have twin tuners? ie. Record one channel whilst watching another.

I'm sure he'd be pretty interested in it.

Re: Hd Tv

yes, it has twin tuner.

you can record and watch, or you can record two programmes simultaneously.

i dont think you will see good quality lcds anywhere near that price just yet. maybe some grey imports from cheapo companies might put out 37inch lcds around 2000 by year end.

you do get what you pay for at the moment with lcds and quality varies wildly. online you can find good 37inch to 40inch lcds online from 3000 to 5000. the new samsungs, the old samsungs, the new sony bravias, for example. you pay a hefty premium to find these in store, mostly.

azone, preisinsel, hawk.ch are three options, for example.

its relatively important to get lcds which are labelled HD ready AND have a HDMI port. this should make them futureproof for awhile.

i have a hd ready lcd tv (sony v series) and hd ready projector (panasonic ae900).

using an xbox 360, they image on both is super sharp and lovely.
I'm currently located in the US, but will be moving to Switzerland in a few months and I just started looking into what sort of tv services are available in Switzerland. I have an xbox 360 and a 37" plasma hdtv.

Do I have to get a new tv in Switzerland? I was hoping that if HD was available, I could use my hdtv from the US, assuming that the cable box would take care of the proper conversions.

Also, will my xbox 360 work with tv's in Switzerland? More precisely, is there any difference between a US bought xbox 360 and one that is bought in Switzerland?

Re: Hd Tv

does the 360 run on 110-240 volts? If yes, then you're OK. I assume you're using component connections for the display?

Does your plasma have a tuner built-in? That'll be useless here. I also assume it runs also on 110-240 volts otherwise you're looking at step-down transformers.....

Your 360 will connect with component to most hd-ready tvs.

You will be missing scart but if you have s-video or 3x cinch (yellow, red, white) and can handle RGB signals then you should be OK.

Re: Hd Tv

What about NTSC and Pal compatability? or does'nt that matter with HDTV.

FYI I was at the comptior in Lausanne last week and they were showing off HDTV in the Sony pavillion , it appears that Canal + is now broadcating certain shows in HDTV format, they were using the footie as an example.

Re: Hd Tv

PAL and NTSC (and SECAM) are analogue formats, effectively. Braodcast standards....which we'll kiss goodbye to with true HDTV.

We will however open doors to 1080p, 720p, 576p, 480p and then shall we discuss the i (interlaced rather than progressive scan)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDTV

PAL (plus) is 576 (not p) at 50 (interlaced) frames per second (effectively 25).

Do read that Wiki entry and spawn off where necessary. Don't, however, come back with questions!!!

I think the power will run on 110-240, but I'll have to check the user manuals. Built in tuner is useless, understood.

Yes, I'm using component connections for the display.

Assuming I get cable tv, will the cable box have component or hdmi connectors?

Re: Hd Tv

you'll need a scart -> component cable - about 40 francs here but if you search ebay, you'll get one like I have for about $15
