Apple Mail problem- help needed please

Hi all,

My email provider changed their server last night and since this morning I can only receive mail and not send any through Apple Mail. If I log onto my webmail account I can send and receive. I have spoken with IT support at my provider and she has walked me through changing the in and outgoing server settings but I still cannot send mail. My Mac OS X is version 10.6.8 and I don't have any updates to install. My Mail version is 4.6 (1085).
I would take my Mac to her for help but she is in Schaffhausen and I am in Zurich. So, as a last resort I will go there. I have also updated my phone and on it I can send and receive mails without any problems.
Can anyone out there give me some ideas of what else to change/update before I go to the Apple store or Schaffhausen for help? Step by step instructions are preferred as I'm not tech savvy.

Many thanks, BBCH

Re: Apple Mail problem- help needed please

I had a similar problem and I couldn't find a way to edit the server setting for sending email. In the end I deleted that account from the Mail program and added it again. Worked fine after that.

I'm sure there must be a way to edit the settings, but it beat me.

Re: Apple Mail problem- help needed please

The gal in IT support suggested I do that but I only want to do it as a last resort. I am afraid that I will lose all the emails in Mail as only the emails from the last month are on my server account. Does anyone know how to back up the emails in Mail so I can delete and re-enter my email account into Mail?

This is precisely the reason you have Time Machine. If it's activated, just do a snapshot then delete the account and try. If it fails and you lose your mail, just restore from Time Machine.

Maybe this helps. What is your server name? Its quite easy to do actually.

Same happened to me. Tried everything. As a last resort deleted in Mail the account and re-created.

Re: Apple Mail problem- help needed please

does Apple mail only send out on port 25?
are you with Swisscom?

Anyway, you can either relay outbound emails to Swisscom on port 587 or to Apple on 587 or 465.

Re: Apple Mail problem- help needed please

you can manually set the port numbers as per mail providers current updates. resyncing your mail provider with your Mail application might help resolving it.

Re: Apple Mail problem- help needed please

moreover you need to back your mails. time machine does it all. but re importing these mails to application might be a complicated process. you may take help of a third party tool that does backing up of mails efficiently.
a brief look out for your reference.
